What is "sonst" doing in this sentence? Could one not simply say "auch"? Or is "sonst auch" a typical phrase or usage in German? Thanks.
I might be wrong, but I think 'sonst' here means 'in other ways' rather than 'otherwise', i.e. "The kids would have found out about it another way", saying that the chlidren would definitely find out about it one way or another rather than only in a different case.
