For anyone confused by this, a "-w-" added to the verb stem makes the passive voice in Swahili. consider "Mchezo Unaanza" (the game starts) vs. "Mchezo unaanzwa" (the game is being started).

This does not sound natural in English. Yes, someone has to start a game, but that is understood.
