Here's a discussion of the sentence "Цей банкомат далеко.

When could this sentence be used? Are you implicitly pointing at a map of ATM's? Or could a certain ATM have just been referenced in conversation, and you're now adding the detail that it's far away?

I have a suspicion that the commentators saying that "that ATM" should be accepted are probably on to something, as I sort of doubt it's just the map case, and if we're having to point at something far away, "that" is definitely the default choice.

EDIT: Here's a similar case. If you've eaten it (barring referencing a listing in a recipe book), then "this" is pretty strange :)

In Ukrainian (also in Russian and Polish) there is no strict division between "this" and "that". When speaking about a known object, normally only "цей" (ru: "этот", pl: "ten") is used, without reference to the distance. "Той" can be used regionally, or counterposed to "цей".
Thus, for "Цей банкомат далеко" both "This ATM is far away" and "That ATM is far away" are correct.
