Achievements in Duo? (Huge Hyyyyyyyyype!!!!!)
Today I opened Duo to see what's what. I opened Safari, then clicked the Duolingo icon. As soon as the page loaded, I was bombarded by popup notifications. They were all saying stuff like "You got the achievement Sharpshooter! (Practice 5 lessons without making any mistakes.)" I promptly blacked out. (Jk)
When I came to, I immediately checked the discussion stream for any announcements. None. So I thought that I must be in an A/B test.
Now when I type this, I think I shouldn't post this. Won't the moderators come after me or something?
But anyways, here are my thoughts on this new feature.
In my honest opinion, this looks amazing. I like this Xbox Live-esque achievements system. But I have some fears. I fear that Duo is either going to make this system completely broken, take an awesome feature off this site to make room for the system (stories?!? O_O), or break everything else on the friggin' site. But if Duo can do this right, I would be SO happy!
Thanks for reading,
So I thought that I must be in an A/B test.
App users were already having the achievements for a good 3/4 months... only now have they decided to put them on the PC version as well. Your metrics as a user were already being recorded so you got a bunch of achievements all of a sudden and all at once.
A late Christmas present so it seems...
But I have some fears. I fear that Duo is either going to make this system completely broken, take an awesome feature off this site to make room for the system or break everything else on the friggin' site.
Yes, your fear was right.
Actually programmers broke the profile page with this new layout.
I can not read anymore forename and surname (last-/family name).
Both fields have been removed.
Why oh why DuoLingo staff??!??
I really really agree with you. So I got bombarded by badges and then discovered virtually all fields have been removed from the profile pages of followers/following so it is now just a list of names, including streaks. So no point maintaining a streak any longer as the competition/pride element has been removed.
Every change Duo introduces reduces the social content of Duo, which was one of its main attractions. I notice that every time a tree is upgraded, it is no longer possible to access the sentence discussion pages of new sentences - they always go to Error 404 and also record zero comments left by anyone, so it isn't just my browser. Soon they will all be gone and then these forums will go the way of Activity. When Duo becomes solely a passive tool, serious learners will go elsewhere.
