I'd be happy if all these new achievements disappeared--they're just clutter. More bonus skills!

Its sad this is happening, another step towards novelty and one away from serious. I cant wait to finish the tree. I take screen shots of all the topics and translations etc etc with the aim of studying independantly I also have a massive Spreadsheet compiled with every word translated. If it was possible I would share all, but we dont seem to have the facilities here.

Muss, am I right in thinking DL is becoming a glorified chat-room for the "hi!" brigade who beg for worthless lingots etc. It's really depressing reading, best not to look at it I suppose. Am determined to keep learning whatever. L.

Its the modern way im affraid. I really like the concept of DL but sadly I just see it as a dimminishing entity now, its basically just following a trend of reward for effort, similar to a lot of fitness apps, Fitbit, Sportstracer etc etc. Its mainly because of you that im still persuing the tree, I got fed up of the inaccuraces and meaningless motivations like flags badges and lingots. The final nail was introduction of Health. Five strikes and out does not work for me because the first time I start a new subject im only really interested in making a list of new words with their translations, so I dont pay a lot of attention at that time. A few spelling mistakes etc and you have to wait hours, or use the web which does not have all the features and grammar of the app. I find it hard to believe that there are those who need worthless images and numbers to keep going. At the end of the day ( and the tree ) what do they do with them ! Im giving away my gems to people who write good posts in well written English, or give in depth answers or post other worthwhile comments, firstly to recognise their effort, and secondly ...... Well what else is there to do with them. But beggers can jog on.

Agree, and you too give me the incentive to keep going. Shall greatly enjoy the reverse tree when the time comes. Coraggio Muss, e viva l'italia!

Whilst I have some sympathy with what you've been expressing, I'm a little confused as to the issue with health. Why do you "have to wait hours"? I haven't experienced this for years but I use the Android app so maybe it's a difference there.

That is something which annoys me, actually - divergence in functionality between the apps. But that's another subject entirely...

If you think the reverse tree is hard... try doing a tree from two foreign languages :-) But seriously, I learn much more from the reverse trees than from the originals because they make you think more in the learning language. Just pointing out that Duo has a lot more to offer even after you complete your first tree.

I completely agree for those of us who've been working at this for a little while, but I think they're really aimed at those just starting out. The small reward may act as encouragement to new learners so they'll push for more. More seasoned learners have received them for things already completed, so they don't really mean anything to us.

In addition, I've noticed that on two occasions I've earned more than 50 points in a day and haven't received the achievement for doing so. Personally, I really don't care since that's a drop in the bucket, but if that happens to a new learner, how discouraging would that be to put in the effort expecting a little badge and then not receiving it.

As for the last suggestion of more bonus skills: YES, PLEASE!!!

While I wouldn't miss the achievements, I totally understand why DL brought them in. Nudging and gamification are well-trodden ways to ingrain the language-learning "habit". Whilst they don't work for everyone, I for one am happy with anything that will broaden the appeal and accessibility of language-learning, since I think it has an important role to play in (global and domestic) society.

That said, achievements and bonus skills needn't be mutually exclusive. And I agree that we should have lots more of the latter! I find learning the idioms particularly interesting and useful!

Interesting. But for many, the greed and begging for valueless lingots etc far far outweigh the interest in learning. Very sad.

I agree wholeheartedly. I haven't been updated to achievements yet, but I've seen how they look, and I really hope I never get updated.

Forgive my ignorance here, but - I can see that you have PLUS against yoir profile. Does this mean you have paid real money for DL offline ? Im curious to know if you still get all the DL rubbish thrown at you, ( based on the title of your post. )

I agree with you. The achievement icons and messages are distracting and clutter up the page. The novelty of them wears off quickly and it would be nice to have a setting to hide them from view.

Concerning bonus skills… I was sad to read recently that these have disappeared for some people, mainly the newcomers, I suppose, because I still have all of mine. I’m a big fan of the bonus skills. I’ve always signed up for the Idioms, Flirting and Christmas skills in each language I’m studying as soon as they became available to me, and they have always been interesting and fun to learn.
