Dutch Books

I've been searching for simple, second-grader-leveled chapter books in Dutch, if that makes any sense. Are there any in particular that you would recommend?

Here is a small list of typical Dutch children's books and authors you should check out if you are looking for children's literature. Some will have a higher level than others, but with a bit of perseverance and perhaps a dictionary if you have one handy, you should find them easy enough.

  • Annie M.G. Schmidt. Recommended works: Minoes, Pluk van de Petteflet, Jip en Janneke, Abeltje

  • Author: Tonke Dragt. Recommended works: de Brief voor de Koning, Geheimen van het Wilde Woud (sequel to the former), de Zevensprong, de Torens van Februari

  • Author: Thea Beckman. Recommended works: Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek, Hasse Simonsdochter, the 'Kinderen van moeder Aarde' trilogy.

  • Author: Jaques Vriens: Achtste-groepers huilen niet (this one will make you cry if you can follow along), Groep acht aan de macht and the 'Meester Jaap' series.

  • Author: Paul van Loon. I personally don't really like his books, but if you are a bit into the 'supernatural, spooky' genre you will find his books to your taste. Recommended works: Dolfje Weerwolfje (series), de Griezelbus (series, scarier than you may think).

  • Series: de Kameleon (60+ books)

  • Series: Dik Trom (you can find some of them at Project Gutenberg)

  • You can also check this page for Dutch children's literature (in Dutch): https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categorie:Nederlands_kinderboek

These books are aimed at a primary school aged audience, but if you're still at a very, very low level (kindergarten level), Nijntje is always a good choice. The Nijntje books are a staple of every Dutch child's childhood and they are positively lovely with their simple, but very nicely done illustrations. Nijntje is known as 'Miffy' in English.

Veel leesplezier!

Yea I would definitely recommend: De grijze jager or De Aanslag De grijze jager of John Flanagan isn't written in difficult words and it's a series of books. It has a very nice storyline. De Aanslag of Harry Mulisch is more difficult, but it's a book you definitely have to read when you're more advanced in Dutch.

I don't know if there second grader books. But as a kid I love the read the books from Marc de Bel. He's an auteur from Belgium that writes children books.
