Good German songs.

Hello. I like listening to music and I would really like to have some German songs to listen to. I am a Christian so I wouldn't like anything with bad lyrics. So does anyone know some good songs? You don't have to have a link as I have google play so I can just look it up but if you have a youtube link then maybe send that too just incase Google play doesn't have it.

regards

cluney

One thing I like to do is to look at the Top 40 chart in Germany to see what the Germans are listening to. I look for the songs with German titles and add them to a playlist.

Do you like pop? Listen to "Au Revoir" by Mark Forester or "80 Millionen" by Max Giesinger or "Sommerregen" by Joris Do you like softer pop? I'm a big fan of LEA Do you like rap? Try Cro or Die Fanastischen Vier Do you like alt rock? Try Madsen or Die Toten Hosen Do you like R&B? Try "Das Beste ist noch nicht vorbei" by Fiva Do you like Frank Sinatra like songs? Listen to "Ich war noch niemals in New York" by Udo Jürgens (a classic) Do you like upbeat dance/club music? Try Culcha Canela Do you like soft rock? Try Revolverheld or the song "Wir wollen doch einfach nur zusammen sein" by Udo Lindenberg (also a classic)

You have probably heard these songs on U.S. radio: "99 Luftballons" by Nena "Major Tom" by Peter Schilling "Da Da Da" by Trio

Two of my favorite artists are SDP and Alligatoah. They write somewhat silly songs.

What you want as a learner is...

  • a slow song (so you can follow the pace)
  • which paints concrete and vivid pictures (so you can imagine and remember)
  • which has a narrative connecting its elements (which helps guessing meaning and remembering as well)
  • which is written in prose rather than in a style too poetic
  • with a catchy melody (ohrwurmy, no use spelling that out in English)
  • which ideally is a bit popular (so you will encounter it in real life)

Then it would be good to be able to like it by its sound or content or it would be nice to gain some real-world knowledge by understanding its lyrics, but all that is secondary.

Based on these (primary) criteria I would suggest you give Reinhard Mey a try. It is old-fashioned, again, just his guitar and him, but if you are French-speaking you will most probably know him anyway (he started his career in France, being from post-war Germany -- i.e., an arch enemy -- that was quite remarkable in those days); and he tells great stories in his natively performed German songs. Most of you might come across his rather boring, but well-known "Über den Wolken" song in one variant or other. So just give Reinhard Mey a try. He is a master of narrating stories via songs. Which are written in rather prosaic style. Which is good.

I really liked 'Über den Wolken'. Thankyou :D

Here's a baker's dozen for you. These are all songs I picked out to memorize, so the lyrics are mostly pretty clearly articulated and not too hard to understand. The song by Traum Cro toward the end is an exception to that - it's a tough one. Lasse Reden might push the boundary of what you consider good taste in a couple of lines, but only slightly; the rest are all pretty much squeaky clean.

Nena - Nur geträumt

Santiano - Frei Wie Der Wind

Paul van Dyk & Peter Heppner - Wir Sind Wir

Atemlos durch die Nacht - Helene Fischer (inevitably)

Nena - 99 Luftballons

Die Ärzte - Hurra

Die Ärzte 'Deine Schuld'

CRO - Traum

Herbert Grönemeyer - Mensch

I think all of them have their lyrics readily available on the internet and most of them also have good English translations on lyricstranslate.com.

'Du hast', by Rammstein.

I don't recommend this person listen to Rammstein given that they said they don't want heavy metal or songs with bad lyrics.

It wasn't a very serious suggestion ;) but it can still useful to listen to it/look at the lyrics, if only as a part of German culture!

Ok, 99 Luftballons by Nena is an absolute classic. It is an anti-war song calling for world peace from the 80s. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La4Dcd1aUcE

It's free if you'd be interested, but it does have adverts if you don't pay for the premium service. They are no more annoying than a commercial radio station though, as there is only one for every 15 minutes of music.

Try Oesch die Dritten. She is an incredible SWISS yodeler, but it is German music. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=oesch+die+dritten Many classical composers were German, like Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, etc. They don't have lyrics, but they are absolutely great if you are a classical fan, which I am.

One of my favourites, but really old (and from the Eastern side of the Berlin wall): City -- Am Fenster. I just got you some YouTube link and, surprise, took the effort and translated those lines on the fly (maintaining the metre and being as literal as possible. Unfortunately, I could hardly keep any rhyme).

But listen to that grand song first! And please, tell me what you think of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7t_pozpt20

Lyrics (my translation):

Einmal wissen, dieses bleibt für immer

Know some day that this remains forever

Ist nicht Rausch, der schon die Nacht verklagt

Not just noise lamenting nights away

Ist nicht Farbenschmelz noch Kerzenschimmer

Not just coloured glaze nor candles' glimmer

Von dem Grau des Morgens längst verjagt

Long since chased away by morning's grey

Einmal fassen, tief im Blute fühlen

Grasp once, deeply feel inside your bloodstream

Dies ist mein und es ist nur durch dich

This is mine and it is just by you

Nicht die Stirne mehr am Fenster kühlen

No more forehead freezing at the window

Dran ein Nebel schwer vorüberstrich

Where a heavy fog was rolling by

Einmal fassen, tief im Blute fühlen

Grasp once, deeply feel inside your bloodstream

Dies ist mein und es ist nur durch dich

This is mine and it is just by you

Klagt ein Vogel: Ach, auch mein Gefieder

Bird's mourn: Will, too, be my feathers

Nässt der Regen, flieg ich durch die Welt

Wet by rain -- once I befly the world

Flieg ich durch die Welt

'nce I befly the world
