Duo places an accent mark on the capital letter. In my opinion it should be "Eén"!

Yep, you're correct. Unfortunately Duolingo's system regards "een", "één" and "eén" as separate words, but ignores capitalization.

I cannot understand why "1 waffle is better than three sandwiches" is regarded as a correct answer and "A waffle is better than three sandwiches" is rejected. The latter should obviously be accepted. Posted on 4th March, 2018.

één is the number one. Hence only one is accepted.
