Shouldn't the relative pronoun here be dative neuter singular = jež?


It is correct, genitive. That is the normal valence of "zeptat se koho, čeho".

Normal way to say or write this is "..., kterého jsem se zeptal, ...".

"Rozumět" binds with dative, but that is in a different clause of the sentence.
