Meaning of c'était noir de monde?

I heard this phrase in a podcast but not entirely sure of its meaning. Does it mean there wasn't anyone there?

I think "noir de monde" means that there are so many people (monde) that you can't see a free spot among them.

This is confirmed at WordReference: http://www.wordreference.com/fren/noir%20de%20monde être noir de monde loc v familier (grouiller de gens) be black with people, be packed v expr
