Is it also possible to add a "by" somewhere in the sentence in order to make it conditional instead of simple past?

  1. How would you say "The result could be worse?"
  2. Does Czech distinguish between the following?
    (a) The result would be able to be worse.
    (b) The result would have been able to be worse.
    (c) The result would be able to have been worse.

You can absolutely add "by" in the sentence.

"The result could be worse." would be "Výsledek mohl být horší."

"The result would be able to be worse." -> "Výsledek by mohl být horší."

"The result would have been able to be worse." -> "Výsledek mohl bývat horší." (But you will probably never use this in czech.)

"by mohl býval být" is the correct past conditional, but it is not used too often.
