I actually find that very common. One of the things I like about Romanian / Moldovan culture is actually that: given the obvious economic difficulties in particular, there doesn't tend to be a lot of excessive nationalism.
Compared to the US where overzealous "we're #1 sentiments!" sometimes make us a bit of an international joke, that humility is refreshing.
But I think there are certainly things to be proud of, whether it's the tasty wine and food, or the multilingualism and external focus that seems so common.
While it's good to be aware of the weaknesses of one's own people / country, at the same time, it's also important to recognize their strengths too.
