What is 靠 doing in this sentence?

It serves the same grammatical function 往 does in "请往左转". As far as meaning, it denotes drawing close to or up against.

It is the "on" part of "on the left side"

Whats wrong with "please stop on the left"?

Mandarin is my mother tongue. Nothing's wrong, your translation is acceptable. 边 is just indicative of the word "side".

We don't generally use / add 'side' in English in this context, but it is usual in many Indian/ Asian / SE Asian phrasing.

Audio for 左边停 seems to be missing

This 靠kao is important, remember it for later.

Can you explain why it is important?

In this case, it indicates the direction of the action that is taking place (stop 停); leaning towards/keeping to the left when stopping.

As there is not much of context, an example in mind is that something which is traveling straight/centrally on a path is being requested to come to a stop on the left.

What's the difference between on and at the left side? Sheesh!
