Don't mark "Audio does not sound correct"

It sounds counter-intuitive and I'll explain it here, but by marking the audio as incorrect you actually decrease the chance of getting audio added.

This course does not have audio. It isn't broken and it isn't because we don't want to add it. Duolingo administration made a decision to launch the course without audio and see how well it does. They may agree to add audio later, but only if we can get the report numbers down. Duolingo administration does not get notified when you report the lack of audio. Only the course contributors get notified. You are preaching to the choir! However, the high number of reports reflects negatively on the course and we are actually less likely to get audio.

Please stop reporting the lack of audio and trust your contributors to keep fighting for you in hopes of one day convincing the administration that we need audio!

Yes! But I think that Klingon course should repair the dictionary hints. Sometimes a word doesn't have a hint, and it makes me find difficult.

This is a known problem and Duolingo is working hard to find the solution. The hints are in there, but when a word starts with a ' , for some reason the Duolingo hints processor can't find them. Our beta testers were able to overcome the lack of those hints so we decided to go ahead and release the course instead of wait even longer. If it is too difficult to struggle through, you may want to put the course aside and wait until it is fixed. But I would like to encourage you to view it as a minor challenge and see if you can learn from the course as is for now. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Note to developers: the literal quote can be escaped in a regex like so: \'. Regular expressions are not rocket science.

Do you mean to Duolingo's software developers (who are probably not reading this forum) or the Klingon course Contributors? Software does the search, so there's nowhere that we Contributors could enter such a character.

To the software developers I imagine. Although if the developers are not using the course and/or the forums, then there is a clear problem. Eat your own dog food and all that ;-)

@eojeff, it is likely not that simple.

Right, I was just mocking the situation. Dry humor isn't always apparent when written instead of spoken.

Seems to me a design flaw of duolingo that the option even exists when the course doesn't have audio yet

March 16, 2018

That's dumb. I'm glad I read this but I feel with as simple as the UI is, there should be some way to signify the lack of audio immediately. That would settle a lot of confusion for contributors and users.

So wait, if the course gets too many reports, Duolingo decides it's badly made and not worth the effort of adding audio?

That's how the system is set up. There may be more subjective ways to convince them, but the basic idea is to prove the course is ready for expansion by getting rid of all the current reports.

Audio would be a big improvement - I agree.

If you would rather use the course with audio, it will be better for you to wait until that has been completed.

This is a beta release: not completely polished, not error-free. A kind of preview.

It's understandable if you'd prefer to wait until the course graduates from beta, by when it will hopefully have audio.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't get why the launched without audio, considering a lot of it is a string of consonants where you really have to guess at the correct pronunciation

Thanks for clarifying. I was wondering the same thing considering I had just started the course. Ironically, I was just about to report it but before I did, I had decided to check the discussion to see if others were having issues with the audio. It is a good thing I came across this discussion.

Then should we refrain from reporting what we think are translation errors, for the same reason?

No. If there are translation errors the contributors should be able to correct those themselves. Those are exactly the kinds of errors we do want to know about and fix right away. We agree that we should not be able to graduate from beta until the vast majority of those are fixed.

Please let us know if you notice something that looks like a translation error. If you have a translation that wasn't accepted, but you think should have been, please report it as a translation that should have been accepted (using the red flag). For any of the other reports, a comment on the forums might be better because you can tell us what the problem was rather than using generic reports (using the red speech balloon).

However, there are two other known problems that don't need to be reported. We know that the hints are not showing up for words that begin with an apostrophe and staff is working on that already. No need to report it.

We also know that the software that creates the multiple choice challenges recapitalizes the Klingon sentences. Staff is also working on that and there is no need to report it.

To add to what jdmcowan said, translation errors that you spot because your translation was not accepted can be reported that way, with "my translation should be accepted".

Any other errors in sentences it would be useful to report in a comment either in the general Klingon forum or as a comment on the sentence's discussion page, saying exactly what you saw (since there are often multiple alternatives accepted, it's impossible to know exactly which one you saw), what you think is wrong with it, and what you think it should be.

The generic report "sentence is unnatural or has an error" is usually too vague to do much about; it's a lot better to know what a learner thought is wrong which which sentence.

And in the case that there is not actually an error, it can be a "hook" for us to try to explain why it works that way.

Audio is now being slowly added to the course. It will be a slow and long process and the programming still has some bugs too. So I still ask that you not mark that audio is missing or does not sound correct since clearing the reports will take valuable time away from adding the audio. But if you want to check it out go back and try the early Skills again.

Duolingo should not have to be convinced to add audio, there are other courses without audio and it's a significant reduction in quality of the site. Audioless courses just don't teach as well.

Anyway thank you for the work you've all done and good luck convincing them

There exist text-to-speech engines out there, but I haven't found a web-accessible one yet. The closes is the Text-to-speech engine in boQwI' (http://www.klingonwiki.net/En/BoQwI). It might help some people curious about how things sound, and willing to retype words into the engine.

Follow-up question: If (or hopefully when) audio gets added, would it be to the tree in its current form (maybe except the Sounds skill)? I'm asking because I'm wondering whether to leave the last Crown level undone to do when there is sound.

Thank You so much! i should have looked threw these forums more, because i just made a post asking this question, i haven't "reported" anything though and people should i dunno be ashamed to do so, mainly because this course is and JUST got launched into "beta" i know many course on duolingo started off without audio when they were in beta, so you def shouldn't be reporting things that quick. with that said, i do hope audio gets added sooner than later, as it's hard to learn a language without knowing if you're pronouncing things right.

lol yah you may be able to "read and write" the language better (but like MOST people) but most people want to "speak" the language (take japanese as a great example, i know tons of people who can speak japanese but can't read a single hiragana, katakana or kanji character to save their life, when you're learning a language i think "speaking" the language is the most important part sometimes people don't even care about reading or writing the language, they just want to be able to speak it) it's just very hard to do that, without hearing how it sounds, then you don't know if you're saying things right or how they are even supposed to be pronounced, so kinda takes away from the "learning" aspect.

I Still love the course and just happy Klingon is finally here, this course so far, as i mentioned, has def helped me to read and write and just understand the language a bit more, but i still have no idea how to "speak" it if i were to ever come in contact with it, aside from the few phrases i've heard from watching star trek etc. lots of love <33333333 and just hope audio finds it's way into the mix soon ^_^
