Duolingo Plus not worth it? Progress doesn't save, streak lost, wasted $ on streak repair

I have just lost my 78 day streak even though I completed my goal (30xp) yesterday. I even took a picture to show my week's progress which proves I played yesterday and met my goal. I made sure to do online, because Duolingo Plus "offline" lessons do not save my progress and I've found it erased my progress time and time again–what is the point of having offline lessons if your progress gets erased every single time you go back online?

Now my 78 day streak is gone, after having already paid for a streak repair–Duolingo said I'd already used my "free streak repair" even though I literally never missed a day before then. So there's another bug. I'm not wasting 6 dollars again to repair. I've emailed support and now am making a discussion post, hoping for a repair because now my streak lost is not my fault.

I've come to regret subscribing to Duolingo Plus and after this subscription period expires I will not be re-subscribing. This app has caused me more stress than anything: the offline lessons do not work, I find that I have to repeat lessons over and over and over again with no progress saved, and now my nearly 3 month streak has disappeared even though I had played yesterday and met my goal online. If it doesn't repair I'm afraid I'll be moving onto another language learning app.

Tips for keeping your future streak:

(For users of the web version ( I see complaints from people, who are using outdated browsers and/or operating systems.)

It's always a good idea ....

  • to check that your phone / tablet has had a chance to synchronise with Duolingo's servers.

Why would it not synchronise? My Wifi/4G/LTE is okay

Because Duolingo has issues in synchronising, almost every day.

Always check if your phone had synchronised with the Duolingo servers after doing a lesson. Sometimes it can take 5-10 minutes after finishing a lesson in the App.

  • have always Duolingo's web version open in the browser of your phone
  • set this browser in Desktop mode
  • refresh your browser after each lesson in the App, and check if the amount of XP increased in the browser with the web version.

Just curious: What app would you be specifically talking about?

  • Mondly: Uses on web quite often tapping and provides not enough free text / word synonyms in a single lesson like Duo
  • uTalk: Is not focused on free translations / phrases either
  • LingQ: Plus is more expensive, Premium asks for monthly subscription
  • Glossika: Requires a monthly subscription (if you do not choose one of the FREE languages like Catalan
  • (learning phrases to speak): is not that cheap for French1-3

Hi, thank you for replying to this!

I used the iOS version but I was connected to the wifi at home the entire time on Saturday. I always make sure to play online because too many times using offline mode my progress has been erased–the main selling point of Duolingo Plus is that you can play offline, but it never works, which is one reason why I regret subscribing.

I have screenshots from both the desktop version and my phone that can clearly show my progress bar for the week and shows that I met my goal every single day this week including Saturday. I have no idea why the online server doesn't show my progress, because my screenshots provide proof that I met my goal on Saturday.

I'm not familiar with any other language apps and frankly I don't mind of their shortcomings because Duolingo Plus' promised features simply do not work and have continued to fail me.

Is it at all possible to repair my streak without paying for it?

I doubt it.

How shall DuoLingo staff check or be able to invest their time with proving that this is a "sync issue" and the XPs have been collected on the app but not submitted to their server??
The support / programmer team does NOT write back or help in app debugging / tracing when you submit a bug report...
...........even when I repeatedly (tested three times!) lost multiple completed lessons (offline cache mode) on Bluestacks V2 Android emulator and I could successfully re-test each time.

As Pentaan has already explained:

App sync XP issues with the DuoLingo (online) server - even when used in online Wifi/3G/LTE mode - quite often result in lost streaks (and used "streak freezes").

You do NOT see this as the app user, as there are no sync progress bars, detail sync screens (e.g logs) or successful completion messages.
The tree / lesson / skill sync all happens magically in the background on-the-fly.

I could verify that an older Android app version had sync issues.....or the tree re-sync (or XP submit) took quite long.

Therefore it is not unlikely that the app had an issue on Saturday which you were not aware of.

If you close the app you are NOT informed about outstanding XP syncs!!!
You really need to MANUALLY double / triple check in a (force full dekstop mode) web browser and your user profile if XPs per day have been submitted AND received from the server and if your streak is now SAVE or not.

Sound complicated. It is.
Sounds wrong. It is.
Sounds the app code is not 100% safe, finished and does not handle "out of boundary conditions" very well. It is.

Now matter of those issues we somehow have to live with it and workaround them....until someone from the app team cares to debug/trace, re-engineers the sync code, adds a sync button and progress bars!

For the streak repair:

This may depend on what mobile app version you use, e.g for IOS.
Are you using IOS with all those forced ALPHA/BETA updates???

DuoLingo staff seems to most of the time deploy BETA app code every 2-4 weeks....not deeply tested (QS).

This could be the reason that the app "repair streak" does not work on your side (IOS).
Yes, If you have already bought the item, you can submit a bug report under Help.
If you want, you could maybe try the Android mobile app, either with the latest version from starting March or some older app versions.

I know that "repair streak" worked once on Android some time ago (tested with older version).
