Why isn't there 的 in this sentence?

  1. Why is it 这双鞋子质量不太好 instead of 这双鞋子质量不太好?

  2. Why is there 的 in 我妈妈做的蛋糕很好吃? Can one just omit it?

  3. How do you know with whose wife you are coming in 希望你能跟妻子一起来 if 妻子 isn't classified?

  4. 我不能跟你一起去美国 is translated originally in Duolingo as "I can't go with you to the US,", but why there is no 'together' in the English sentence whereas Chinese does(一起)?

Thanks

It's common to omit 的 when referring to one's family members.

How do you know with whose wife you are coming in 希望你能跟妻子一起来 if 妻子 isn't classified?

Context. 妻子 in this context would almost always refer to 你's wife because if it didn't it would be weird. (Why would you come with someone else's wife?) It would only refer to someone else's wife if you were talking about them before you said this sentence.

我不能跟你一起去美国 is translated originally in Duolingo as "I can't go with you to the US,", but why there is no 'together' in the English sentence whereas Chinese does(一起)?

If you put "together" in the English sentence, it doesn't make sense. Chinese works differently though and it makes sense here, however I don't have a formal explanation for why this makes sense. If anyone has one, please provide it. 谢谢!

一起 can be translated here as "along." "I can't go 'along' with you to the US" sounds just fine to me.

  1. I think this makes sense without 的 if you regard it as a "topic-comment" sentence, where 这双鞋子 is the topic and 质量不太好 is the comment.

  2. This sentence really needs 的. As it is, it means "the cake that my mother made is very delicious". Without 的, it would be "My mother makes cake very delicious", with the last part not making sense after the previous part.

Maybe I misinterpreted what OP asking in the second question. Thanks for providing the other side to that question.

  1. I would not say it wrong.
  2. [s.]我媽媽 / [v.]做 / -- need sth here -- [n.]蛋糕 /[adv.]很 / [adj.]好吃。 I guess that 很好吃(taste good) should only refers to the cake, otherwise you are tasting “the action (my mom makes cake)”. However, I will not say anything wrong for this. With 的 or not, it's the same. (I am a native speaker but not a Chinese teacher.)
  3. Sorry I don't understand your question.
  4. In this case, yes we could omit 一起, but it will be less emphasise. In some situation, 一起 is quite a useful word if you want to omit the subject in informal speaking . 「一起去看流星雨吧!(Let's go to watch the meteor shower!)」「要不要一起去逛街?(Do you want to go shopping together?)」
