"wej mang jIH; mangHom neH jIH."

Translation:I'm not a soldier yet; I'm just a cadet.

neH after a noun means "only" that noun, not something else. neH after a verb means "merely" that verb, not something stronger. mangHom neH jIH means I am only a cadet (I am not also something else). What your sentence is trying to say should be expressed as mangHom jIH neH I am merely a cadet (not something more than that), because the jIH is acting like a verb here.
