New 'Crown' update makes Duolingo Plus' offline lessons feature useless. I cancelled my subscription

Hey team,

PROBLEM: The new crown system makes Duolingo Plus' offline lessons feature nearly useless. You can no longer repeat the same skill offline until you have reconnected to the internet to load the next "level" of the skill. This defeats the main purpose of Duolingo Plus which was the ability to have offline lessons. I will repeat the same offline lesson multiple times to help me remember and retain the lesson content.

MY USE CASE: I use Duolingo on my commute each day (2x 30min/day) and on any flights (9 hours London to California, 1-2x a month). I am currently learning two languages, Mandarin as my primary and French as my secondary. My commute is entirely on the underground train where I don't have any network connection. This commute is my prime Duolingo time. I will do repeat one or two skills multiple times during my commute. With the new update, I can no longer do this, which for me, makes Duolingo Plus completely pointless.

POTENTIAL FIX: Give you the option to repeat the same lesson again multiple times.

CONSIDERATIONS: I assume most of the translation work is done server side, hence why the app startup time is so long (checking for internet connection) and translations take so long. This makes sense as it results in a lower storage requirement on the client side and also less compute time. I would be happy to forgo some client side storage for the ability to A. Repeat skills so I'm not overloaded with new content everyday B. The ability to swap languages so I can keep up my progress on both languages at the same time.

I cancelled my Duolingo Plus subscription as I consider it no longer worth it. Please consider fixing this, I really enjoy using Duolingo and it's helped me have the most success at learning a new language that I have had in a long time.

I suggest you move this to 'troubleshooting' where DL staff are more likely to see it.

The whole loss of both the free & guided review functionalities of the old system is a bit troubling. There's gonna naturally be sections that we pick up more easily, or need to review more than others, but this system doesn't really address that at all. We can see how many lessons we've done in a section, but we can't see if we might have weak words, or need to strengthen up like we could with the old system.

I guess the practice button is supposed to do that? But it doesn't show us which section(s) we'll practice, or now even which section we did after we're done. I honestly have no idea what it even does.

We definitely need something to cover this better. Whether it's something kinda like the old system, a more expanded practice section, ability to move around levels in a section. Even something as simple as seeing your correct % or peek % in a section would be a lot better than nothing.

Yeah I agree, it doesn't provide feedback on what particularly skill you could work on, like the old 'strengthen' system did. I'm a little bit curious how these seemingly major features weren't addressed in the new update.

check out lingodeer app for mandarin. you can download the whole course for offline use (it's free and great). also when did you get the crown feature? i have been waiting for it.

I wish I would not update my old version to the crown version.

the new version reduced my speed almost to half even I am studying harder.

In addition I do not understand why I am doing all these exercises repeatedly...

If needed to strengthen my skill on particular subject I was doing that...

As a last one when I need top crown level does it mean that I will never need to exercise a special topic I want... it is nonsense.

I want my old version back

How did you cancel the subscription of the crown update?

March 22, 2018

They cancelled their subscription to "Duolingo Plus".

Crown-levels feature is not something one subscribes to or not. It's a new feature that has been tested by Duolingo and that they now slowly deploy definitively to all user accounts.

Disable crowns (may or may not work anymore):

I feel like I'm missing something; I still have the option to download lessons and it still works - I just checked. I feel like I'm missing the problem?

March 23, 2018

Hey, sorry I wasn't clear. My issue was with repeatability of lessons, not the ability to download them for offline use or not. With the old system, you could repeat a downloaded lesson offline as many times as you wanted. With the new crown feature, when you 'level up' a skill it tells you need to go online before you can redo that skill, effectively limiting the amount of times you can practice a skill offline.

Please, submit a bug report via

and select "Purchase Issue" from the dropdown on the form.

What plattform have you been on? Android or IOS?

I do not use "DuoLingo Plus" but I had read that the offline lessons won't allow you to "Strengthen a skill" or use the global "Strenghten skills" button(s)??!?

What you probably did on your smartphone on the train was, to re-do the (10) lessons contained in a single skill?!

It is possible to manually offline download multiples skills one by one, so this might have worked good for your 2x 30 min. way from home to your office.

And of course this currently does not work anymore with the new crown update - error by design as real SR repetitions are not currently planned.

Am I right?

Does your account have the new system with crowns?

March 23, 2018

I haven't even gotten the "crown" update yet...
