That's not correct. India is a country and has only ever been so.

The Indian subcontinent, the part of the Indian tectonic plate that is above sea level, includes parts of other countries. Previously it was a detached subcontinent, in the period between it being a part of the continents Gondwana and Asia. But at that time the country India did not exist.
