Disastrous Crown Conversion. Duolingo, please HELP

I had a disastrous conversion today. When I opened my screen i was asked if I wanted to swith to the new crown system. It worked out terrible.

Before conversion I had a completely golden tree. All subjects were gold, level was 22, fluency was 67%. The practices which I was offered were the right ones, they improved my knowledge of the Italian language.

After the conversion my tree looks like a disaster. I was at the start of the tree. back to crown level 2 for basics. I did 6 rounds of practice at crown level 2, to arrive at crown level three where i need to do another 9 rounds of practive.

Surely this cannot be right.

PLEASE HELP! Mi Aitua Aidez moi Rette mich, sonst bin ich verloren! Help!

Man, like the entire user base absolutely hates this system. Why keep it? Show some sense and listen to the customers and just go back to the user friendly, choice and freedom providing system that didn't senselessly withhold information.

I CANNOT BELIEVE I NEED TO DO 240-500 SENTENCES PER CATEGORY TO GET MY TREE GOLD AGAIN. 25,000 PLUS SENTENCES: REALLY? NO NEW SENTENCES OR VOCABULARY, JUST THE SAME ONES I'VE ALREADY DONE COUNTLESS TIMES BEFORE. IS THE NEW FOCUS OF DUOLINGO TO SIMPLY WASTE YOUR TIME???

You don't have to reach crown level 5 in every lesson if you don't want to. OTOH those earlier lessons are a good way to meet your daily goal when you don't have much time for Duolingo and now, instead of just getting a few XP on your way to a higher level in the course, you also make a little progress toward a new crown.

but for people who are "perfectionists" or "completionists" and care to have a fully completed, fully gilded tree... does this not present a problem?

As much as I appreciate Duolingo, this software roll out has been, uh, problematic re: expectation setting.

Personally, over the long haul, I think the revised system is an improvement. Short term, it's looking a bit bumpy.

Here's my take on how the levels work: L0 is an introduction to the skill, L1 as a refresher. L2 is more complete practice. L3 is working on mastery (building your target from source language). L4 is getting your ninja skills on. L5 is black belt.

I'm still exploring the new system, so this is just my first impression.

Without space repetition learning has no sense, because you forget things with time. Old system had strenghtening bar, crown system dont have it, and is sucks...

Totally agreed. Duolingo has long said how important spaced repetition is then they go and do this. If they wanted to improve the system they could have replaced skills only being either gilding or ungilded with a system with more levels, maybe skills could have gone bronze, silver and gold, with gold demonstrating high proficiency in even the most difficult phrases. Instead they've gone with a system where you grind to get a higher 'crown' level that doesn't decay over time and so in the long run won't reflect your actual ability level.
