"He wants to put his book on the table."

Hm, I would rather use "poser" for an object you hold in your hand and then put it on a support, which is the case here.

"mettre" can be used for the English "put", but more for clothes you put on, or objects you put inside something.

That said, it's bad habit in common French to use "mettre" for a lot of actions ^^.


Could be another possibility.
