Thank you so much, that is really useful for me. Have a Lingot!

By the way, I noticed Chapter 5 occurs twice, you may want to erase one of them.

Thanks so much! As a Chinese learner studing in China for some years, this helps with some of the words I have missed, and to all of the words and characters I know, it's correct! (China is not like Japan or some other parts of Aisa like Malaysia or Singapore. They DO-NOT speak English. You will be lucky to find that rare person that lives there that speaks good English. At least, I havent found anyone who has spoken good English outside of places where English is taught or used to teach, the people I came with, etc. Study up on Mandarin {Or whatever dialect like Cantonese that applies to where you will be in China} before going there! It will be worth it.) Gave a lingot!

Also, would not recomend going to China just for purposes of immersion in the language, though you would certainly get it. But if you are in China or anywhere else, I would recommend to get a personal tutor or a native to teach you. The results are definently worth it from my tutor. Make sure that they speak English so that you can understand too though, otherwise, they might mistake a word in English for another word in Mandarin and you would be speaking the wrong things all the time, also, you probably would not be able to learn if they only speak Mandarin. But if you don't want the translations to English, or have them just teach in Mandarin, that could be very effective as well. Hope you guys reach your goals in learning Mandarin!

I can attest to only a little amount of people in mainland China being able to hold a 5-10 minute conversation in English. Mandarin is the "lingua franca" to link everyone in China together...even if you speak Cantonese, you'll still be able to talk to someone in Tibet because you both most likely speak Mandarin too, albeit probably at different levels depending on your culture.

this looks great to me!

however, i have two suggestions, about vocabulary and strokes, but both touching on the same theme: making the workbook more self-contained.

the vocabulary should include characters such that usage examples can be read by a beginner without referring to dictionary as much as possible. i know the intro says use dictionary, but it's an interruption that breaks focus. for example, chapter 1 introduces 女, 男, 子 and 人 but then goes on to provide 3 usage examples all of which also include 孩 which was not defined (i think assuming knowledge of 我, 是, 一 and 个 is reasonable). a single line in the "translation" section , "孩子 - hái zi - child" in the translation section would make it easier for the user.

strokes. the workbook provides stroke count but not order. again - i know we have yellow bridge for that, but it'd be nice if the workbook actually gave a stroke by stroke example for each character. i also know it may not be easy to find in the form that can be included in a PDF and here i can offer my help, let me know if you're interested.

Thank you!

As for including definitions of characters used in sentence examples, I'll work on that when I have time to update what is out right now.

Yes, I admit that is a major fallout in providing comprehensive stroke order usage. YellowBridge is a very useful resource but at the moment I can't find any resource that I can include within a pdf. GIFs don't work well when they are on PDFs. I'd be glad to hear any suggestions on how to add more comprehensive stroke order.

i'm a programmer as well as a student of chinese and a few years ago i created a simple app that draws chinese characters stroke by stroke, a-la yellow bridge (actually, i did it because back then yellow bridge used a java applet for this and it was slow to the point of being unusable, so i just re-wrote it in HTML + JS and even offered it to YB to replace their applet; they didn't respond). point is, i have the code and all the character data still around. here's a video i captured back then - https://youtu.be/VQQQreZcOcw the data is all in vector form so it can be scaled to any size. i have the code as well so background can be modified or removed, colors changed, etc.

specifically, the idea for the guide would be to take snapshots after each stroke and just put them next to the characters. it won't be animated, but it will still be helpful. i can provide you with images - one per stroke, one per character with all strokes next to each other, multiple characters or pretty much any other form.

looks great, @rojer9!! I am using a chromebook, basix unix shell stuff, I was able to download and run a version of R, etc. Do you think I'd be able to install and play with your simple app? (no exp in JS yet, but eager to learn and grow)

I downloaded Pleco on my iPhone and iPad. It has become my go-to Chinese Bible for all things characters and removing ambiguousness from understanding anything in Chinese. I've also added an extra voice or two, to get a sense of the different accents for the same word . . . Pleco is irreplaceable for me, because of its rich, all-encompassing content . . . and the character stroke order covers S.C. and T.C.

April 11, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CvonD1

I recommend you download the Pleco Chinese dictionary App. It will show you the order of strokes, in Simplified Chinese and Traditional as well if you need it, and how to pronounce each example you look up.

Thank you so much! These three books look very organized! Even 汉字 pages!!! Your work on these three booklets is extensive! May I ask you, what is your background? I started learning Chinese about 18 months ago, and am at Level HSK3 (with the help of Peking U. through Coursera); but I need to read, write and study every day to feel I am not losing ground. Thank goodness I love learning Chinese and hope to soon make a trip there, (I am thinking of registering at a good school for a few months), to master the basics of solid fluency at the speaking level.

April 11, 2018

I’m American-Chinese and I grew up speaking Cantonese and was sent to Chinese school to achieve a fluent level of Mandarin which I am now.

I love the fact that you are using your high proficiency to share how you organize your acquiring and retention of the Chinese language! And I can't help noticing your level #11 in French: you are one level above me, the native French speaker. . . .哈哈哈! (To be fair, I don't spend much time on French, although I read all their stories, which was a lot of fun.)

Another thing I noticed:

In Chapter 17, the Chinese sentence translated to 'We sing songs together' appears to have the character wo3 repeated twice in the beginning of the sentence. I am just a beginner, so maybe this is correct and intentional, but it looked like it might be a typo, so thought I would mention it.

Personally I think your workbooks are excellent. Especially when used in combination with other learning material, which is likely how most people will use it. The fact that you emphasize writing characters with the correct stroke order is really good for serious learners.
