Duolingo admins! Please allow users to disable crowns.

There are currently a lot of discussions about new Duolingo crowns system. Some users are happy with this new system (maybe temporarily, or new users who haven't ever use the old system). Meanwhile significant, and constantly increasing number users do not like this new system and want to switch back to the old one (without crowns, but with strength bars). There are several discussion on how to make it possible via patching. Meanwhile for many users patching does not work for some reason, and for some users patching maybe a quite complicated way.

Could you please acknowledge disappointment and frustration of many users by the new crowns system, and eventually allow users (who want to do this) to go back to the old system in a simple way, without patching, or please at least provide a patch/script that can be used by any user (with no exceptions) to switch back to the old system if the user wants.

Thank you!

P.S.: This discussion is NOT against users who are happy with the crowns system, no need to defend it here. I do not ask admins to switch all users to the old system. I'm just asking to allow switching back for users who do not like the new system.

I am sad to see this crown system and miss the percentage. I have worked hundreds of hours towards the percentage point I reached and now it's gone! The crown system is not as much of a motivator for me as it seems to just represent what I have finished and not a goal to reach. I have no idea what the number in my crown places me at. Also, the new graphics are very colorful, but they seem to be directed toward keeping a child's attention. Not to be negative, just my observation.

You could go on duome.eu to find out your percent strength like this "duome.eu/username"

you can easily calculate this yourself i.e. (crowns collected)/(the number of skill levels X5). the old 100% no longer would no longer apply since duolingo is obviously trying to introduce harder difficulties into each skill.

I would very much like to see a way to go back to the bar system :(

I mean, I would consider myself a power user, and definitely do not like the new crown system. It’s inefficient. There are literally dozens of apps I already use passively in addition to this. I doubt they would want to see their ad revenue decrease because of a stupid backlash. This is the Snapchat update equivalent. (Very bad.)

I agree. this update will make me quit if they don't remove it. and I have a 613 day streak, so that would be bad.

[edit] I do have a patch to remove it for now, but I have now idea how long it will last.

I hate the new crown system too. A bunch of people are considering quitting duolingo because of crown levels, and I did too for a bit, only I have a 530 day streak and don't wanna lose it :P I wish duolingo would change it back or at least give us the option to. Crown levels are confusing and WAY more work (approximately 84 lessons to complete one skill!!!!) and plus I don't know exactly what I'm going to learn in a lesson, like what they used to say, and the tips/notes are now harder to read. I've been on duolingo for a while and that has gotten me 66% fluent in Danish. Only now I'm stuck with 189 (some number that I don't know what it's out of or how I can use it to tell how fluent I am). Plus seeing the skill tree gradually fill up with strengthened skills is very motivating, only now that there are crown levels it doesn't show that and I have to redo a bunch of stuff!!!! Now that the crown levels are making people (and me) go back to basics, and the improvement seen is now much more gradual than before, it is very discouraging. maybe duolingo is trying to make it so that the language you learn will make you even more fluent than before, since Duolingo is considered only an 'excellent addition to your toolbox' but not going to make you fluent on its own, but a bunch of people still use it every day and duolingo did not need to change it to this new sucky system that will actually make people quit and so learn less language instead of people becoming more fluent.

I hate it too. I hate not being able to know how much to practice every single day of each language. The yellow bars were life, I could practice every language every single day and still learn another one. Right now, I don't anymore which language I should focus on! And finishing each unit takes a LONG time! So making a unit per language everyday is clearly not an option, ain't nobody got time for that!

I stopped using Duolingo and switched to the Spanishdict.com tool. I urge everyone who doesn't like Crowns to switch.
