1000 days of Duolingo

About three years ago, someone mentioned Duolingo in a discussion I was reading.

1000 days ago I registered here when I was looking for someplace to learn Finnish. Sadly, Finnish wasn’t an option, but I was curious anyway, so I tried a few German lessons to check how much I could remember from school.

It was a good choice, because in a few days I found other people in the discussions who knew a bit about Finnish and helped me find good resources. (Some even created more of them.) At the same time I continued, slowly, with German.

More than two years and two tree updates later I finished my German tree (while my Finnish, elsewhere, grew slowly to a similar level).

Today, I have reached another milestone. As I’ve been only strenghtening for some time, I though I would let go about now, but the announcement of Skill Levels got me curious again. I guess I’ll stay around just a little more to see what it’s like.

And who knows what will come next.

Gratuluju k nastávajícímu tisíci a jednomu dni!

Hi and thanks! I'm not actually on Memrise anymore, I moved to Anki a while ago. I miss the leaderboards a little bit, but other than that, the Anki environment seems to suit me better. And it also helped that I could take "my" Memrise courses with me.

Even coming from a deep IT background I have to say: AnkiSRS is more complicated than Memrise - so many settings, available addons, "filtered decks", newest BETA different to stable versions, etc.

So many forum threads and blog suggestions to scan....

I would love to import my completed Memrise Portuguese courses one day, as AnkiSRS supports the concept of "Overdueness" and self-rating answers (probably a nice alternative to typing which I do not do on Memrise as often as I should), but:

It will take more time for me that I have read through the manual and the sheer mass of available informations and to find the appropriate settings (and addons) to re-start these "Overdue" courses first with some "special settings".

Yes, it takes a moment to get used to, but I think it's worth it, at least for people who know what works for them and what doesn't. And the default settings are quite sane, you can start from there.

Self-rating is great - you know yourself if you made a typo or remembered it wrong. It is possible to set up typing questions there too (and if you do, you can still ignore the typing, because you rate the result yourself).

Don't know about overdueness.

Hi Widle,

congrats!

How do you like the German stories: http://stories.duolingo.com?

How do you like the Czech course so far?
Does it really use a quite different (better?) teaching style / skill design as any other DuoLingo course as I have heard about?
.
.
I guess I would have wanted to continue my tree last year with all about the "new Czech BETA course is there" hype right after my first Hello skill, but:

Somehow I am too busy with those three Portuguese trees - and Memrise, Mondly, uTalk, should be doing Pod101 - and I was really afraid that I would too easily lose focus for my 2nd year learning a much more difficult language like Polish or Czech at my early stage.

Ich glaube es wäre wirklich toll zukünftig etwas Tschechisch sprechen zu können, da der Steinberger See, wo ich früher öfters mal Wakeboarding war, nahe der Grenze liegt und somit sehr gerne von Tschechen besucht wird.
An einem anderen Wakeboarding Spot hätte ich bsw. Polnisch gut nutzen können; so war ich teils auf Englisch festgefahren.

Viele Grüße aus Deutschland

I can't tell you much about the German stories (I only peeked there, but I guess I should try more while I'm still on Duolingo) nor about the Czech course (it's my native language and all my XPs there are from trying to test out when the course started). But the sentences looked fun and more useful than some of the German ones I've encountered.

Congratulations on your 1000 days!! I am shooting for the same goal myself, later this year. :)

I'm also extremely interested in Finnish - I've found some good resources myself, but I was wondering if you'd share which ones you've found the best/most helpful?

I find it best to combine various resources, so don't be afraid to try everything out yourself. Below is a list I've adapted from my older post. I think I've spent most time on Memrise/Anki, Clozemaster and the daily news.

  • Slow Finnish here in Duolingo discussions. It has dialogues, grammar explanations, exercises. And if you want to practise it properly, with spaced repetition, you can use the accompanying course on Memrise

  • There are other Memrise courses, like Suomi Monostyle. I've moved from Memrise to Anki recently but I took some of the Memrise courses with me because while the Anki engine is good, there are not as many shared resources there.

  • Clozemaster - exposure to a lot of sentences in the target language - you only need to type one word, so you can go through many sentences in a short time. Has spaced repetition. Great for learning vocabulary/phrases, but no grammar.

  • Mondly teaches vocabulary through sentences organized by topics, but has no spaced repetition. You won’t learn much grammar apart from the basic I am, you are, because they use one template for all languages. The unpaid version is a bit limited but I’m not sure how exactly.

  • There is a web-based course from Helsinki University

  • If you are from the US and have a library card, you could try Mango

  • Uusikielemme to look up the main grammar.

  • Morphological Analyser will help you find the basic form of any word you might encounter (this is a very useful tool)

Stuff to read

  • Selkouutiset and Selkosanomat offer news in simplified Finnish. Selkouutiset have a few articles every day, Selkosanomat is updated every two weeks.

  • After you learn a bit, Ymmärrä Suomea has twenty texts to practise reading. There is some grammar explanation and comprehension test with each one.

  • If you like children’s stories, you can read or download some at Iltasatu
