Wouldn't this be better as "combien d'appareils electroniques avez-vous?"?

Yes, that is also accepted. (Don't forget the accent: électroniques).

Perhaps "How many electronic gadgets do you have?"

Yes, I would say that's common english shorthand. Is there a similar French slang?

This sentence structure seems very strange to me. I don't recall seeing this word order in my 10+ years of studying french. Has anyone else come across it written this way? I normally would see "combien de + nom + avez-vous" or "vous avez combien de + nom" or "combien de + nom + est-ce que vous avez".

I am curious, is the d'appareils the de slidden over from combien de? I always thought the phrase has to be combien de?

Yes, it is always "combien de", but since "appareils" has the vowel at the beginning, it makes the liaison. "Combien d'appareils..."

How many electronic APPLIANCES do you have is also fairly common.

It seems more natural to say devices rather than electronic devices

Or just "electronics"...
