Taureau sounds rather odd in this voice sample.

It is correct.

When i first heard it, I put a made-up word, un dureu, from the male voice. Now that I learned it, it sounds more like un taureau.

Spelling aside, it sounds like Spanish toro. I know there are bullfights in southwest France. I wonder if the French crowds yell le taureau!!! instead of el toro ???

In English we say a herd of cows or cattle. Cows are female, bulls are male.

In French a cow is "une vache" and a bull is "un taureau". How are the animals referred to in general?

According to Word Reference it is "le bétail", which I don't recognise, but "les bovins" it says works too, and that one does sound very familiar to me.

why "ox" not accepted ?

An ox is un bœuf. Fort comme un bœuf. As strong as an ox.
