This Crown-Level-Thing messes with my learing
so, i am not happy at all...
say a topic has 12 different "portions". i need to repeat a single portion for some 3-4 days to get the vocabulary into my head. how should i do that, when this crown-level-chaos-thing does not let me repeat one of the portions over and over again?
this completely messes up my learning experience...
This will be a quick way to lose people who want to learn their language. I so want the old way.... Duolingo had it.
Instead of getting rid of it, they could fix the problems completely. For example by making strengthened skills before level 5 get golden again and by re-adding the option to test out of skills.
Please check out my post "Suggestion: How everyone would love the Crowns :)" https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26860873
If the Duolingo staff sees it, maybe they will fix the crowns. :)
I am fully in support of that suggestion. I was a HUGE fan of the strengthening skills. Not so much with the crowns
Agree with this 100%
Don't even know how to pick up where I left off without doing a bunch of manual work taking notes etc...
Exactly. Repeating a new, single lesson for a number of days was exactly how i remembered new vocabulary. Now there is no opportunity to re-visit each lesson without being bounced into a new one, with new words, which in turn can't be re-visited. Repetition is key to learning, but that opportunity has been totally lost. Agree that deeper, more varied lessons are a great idea to keeping motivated and cementing knowledge in a new way - but keep a logical, helpful way of getting that knowledge embedded in the first place.
Yes, the course is too dense in content. Eg., Regular Verbs 1 has 12 different grammatical explanations and also lots of new vocabulary. I have to repeat a single lesson for 3-4 days as well. So it's not bite sized lessons, rather dinner sized lessons ;)
I have not tried crown levels yet, but by a slip of my thumb, I accidentally updated to crown levels. Is there a way to revert to the old interface?
oh my goodness, now I can feel that bad feeling inside me, but still thanks for letting us know
then i hope they will listen and bring the next update soon... i am not so much for reverting to the old, but for a mix of both with the choice to be mine to make...
This crown system completely ruined the way i study. I learn a "portion" with the help of another program to help memorise the words. How am i supposed to learn new words now.
I agree wholeheartedly, and typed up something similar! This makes things so much more complicated and makes direct learning such a mess.
I hate it. I thought I was the only one. I hope staff can see this discussion because I need the old one back. I can't choose the level I want now because you have to wait till you repeat. It's a terrible update! People are going to stop using Duolingo if this issue is not fixed
I agree. The Korean course is not that easy (at least for me). I used to repeat each lesson of a skill several times before moving on.
Shoot, I haven't even tried Korean yet with the new crown system. I do the same thing.
Personally, I think it's a bit troublesome. I already started learning French before I came on Duolingo. I was able to test out of a lot of stuff, which saved time. But now all of these lessons still says I have more to do (even the ones that have simple words like girl, boy, woman, man, etc.), and there's no option to test out!
I have the same problem as you, I can't even repeat my lessons anymore, they said they did it so we will learn more ect. But I have the feeling that I'm not learing anything right now. I could only learn new vocabulary when I repeated a lesson 324745936 times in a week, and that is unfortunately not possible anymore. They messed up everything.
I've only gone back and done a couple of lessons, but it appears there is all kinds of review throughout the different levels. Give it a try. I am actually disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much new or advanced material. This may not be true of other languages, but for Korean, it seems to mean just more review.
It is true of Swedish. The lessons are now so simple it's a joke. And they say the Crowns update is aimed at "advanced learners." How is that possible?
Hating these stupid crowns. I think I'll give up on Duo for awhile at least.
In addition to this just making it impossible to know how you are progressing, I am finding a LOT of bugs. I thought it was just me but now several times i have done 2-3 lessons in the crown, only to return later that day or the next and find no record. Plus it says I have not done lessons for the day. Is anyone else finding finished lessons going missing?
try writing down the vocabulary down on notes, see if it works. It works for me
yeah, well... been there, done that...
that is standard learning without the gamification that duolingo provides. which kept me going.
that did not work for me before duolingo, it wont work now.
why don't you provide me your email, I can recommend you a few PDF files and images that might trigger your memory.
In my opinion this way forces us to review the whole things, so thats very helpful to be more fluent and remember all. The aim of duolingo is to help us because it's not enough to repeat only one lesson if you want to be more fluent!!
i get to the whole thing aniway... but why should i feel pushed to? thats exactly what made learning any language in school a pain in the behind.
and i thought duolingo would not go that route... but there we are, from a tool, that did it all, back to pen and paper and vocabulary-cards
from gamification back to the old ways...
Yeah, this is rather demotivating. It was perfect to make all the circles gold and keep them that way? You learn all the lessons and then you repeat them thus you don't forget them.. but what now? I think people are gonna leave duolingo soon. It's very sad ,cause it is a great website for learning languages.
I've been repeating one lesson over and over, and while it does go to a new lesson if you do it three times, it repeats previous lessons so you can still get the practice you need just with bigger portions of words.
Thomas, there is no problem with lack repetition. I've only gone back to the earliest lessons, but if they are any indication, the lack of new material is disappointing, the opposite problem of what you first surmised. In the "Basic" section, right after the alphabet, there are 12 levels with review ad nauseam. They do throw in some stuff not yet explained (possessive 의) but the repetition should surely be sufficient.
I like it actually. It helps me get fluent and now though I have completed only 4, i can make sentences
