Skills are weakening too fast

My boyfriend and I started Duolingo at the same time (with a 204 day streak!) and we learn/do lessons at the same pace.

I have noticed that my skills weaken EVERYDAY and his does not. Is this a bug?? :( His tree is golden, yet my skills decay pretty rapidly. It is hard to stay competitive with him because I spend too much time strengthening my skills (and earning way more points) while he continues to new lessons.

Please help! :)

Well, I don't know if it is a bug or not, but... I do know that if I get all hearts on my practices one day, then I don't seem to have as many weaken the next day. But if I just barely make through my new lessons, then I think Duo notices and gives me more things that I need to practice. I know that keeping your tree golden is hard from experience and really you don't necessarily have to do it, but I encourage you to continue doing it! You learn all the things better and it all really sticks it in your brain much better the more often you review it, so you might actually be learning it better than your boyfriend. ;) oh, and my plan for keeping my tree golden WHILE learning new skills: every day I review all of the weakened skills and learn at least one lesson from a new skill. Or sometimes I flip it and do one weakened skill and learn a whole new skill. I hope that helps! ^.^

Yeah. I have finished my tree, but find it hard to keep it golden as it rate of decay seems to be much more rapid than when I was completing the tree. Very strange, isn't it. I actually think I do more work now that I did before so why is the decay so fast?

I personally don't mind I'm still trying to complete my tree.

The feature that I missed is the Vocabularyt feature where on can focus on group of words that one is losing strength.

Could the rate of decay somehow relate to how well you do when you strengthen it? For example, when you do a timed practice and you only get 5 right before running out of time, but the skill turns gold. Would the skill then decay faster as opposed to if someone got all 20 right on the first try? I don't know if this is correct, it's just a theory.

I find that Duo works best (I learn more, and better, and my tree easily stays golden) if I:

  • Do about 3 to 5 "Strengthen Skills" sessions each day. I do this even if I don't have time for anything else.

  • Repeat a new lesson over and over until I can finish it with all hearts intact and without any hovers. This means I do some lessons a LOT.

  • When I finish a skill set, do practice sessions on that skill set until I can finish about half of them with all hearts intact (like 2 out of 4 or 5 sessions with all hearts).

If I use Duo as described above, I find that the rhythm and nuances of the language start to sink in, my vocabulary becomes more solid, and my tree only decays very very rarely. I can only remember having one skill set lose its gold color in the last three months.

The repetition sometimes makes me want to scream, but I also find that the phrases pop into my mind much more easily when I want to say something. It's like the idea is there, already formed, and I don't have to do so much thinking about structure and conjugation. With enough repetition, things just start to fall in place and click.

I experienced a related problem. I used to keep my tree golden but once i got about two thirds through the skills decayed faster than i could keep up so I just stopped strengthening them. Now I'm 6 rungs from the bottom and decided to go back and make my tree gold again. I'm practically all gold and they have not been weakening nearly as fast. I can keep up now and soon will start doing the new material again.

It almost felt as if new contributors added a bunch of material to old sections or something. I don't know why it was decaying so fast, but it's not anymore. Maybe Duo is experimenting with decay rates to see what impact they have on retention and motivation. I don't know..

Hmm... That is a bit odd. It isn't like that for me. Not always, anyways. I don't push myself, I just try to learn everything right and make myself repeat a lesson over and over again until I get it just perfect. Now I at least have the words jammed into my brain. XD Maybe you should try repeating lessons until you understand them completely?

I understand what you mean! I have the same issue. My memory is weak and I need to study a lot to comprehend the new words and sometimes the grammar! So be patient! Nobody learns the same way or the same time. I have to repeat a lesson 2-4 times to actually remember everything! Your boyfriend maybe is a fast learner but some of us are not. Take your time and understand the lesson! That's the important thing!! All the best :)

I think something has changed recently that causes skills to decay faster and means that the general strengthen option never fixes them. I just ignore the strength for now.

You may have been separated into to A and B test groups. My lessons as well decay quicker than they use too. They are most likely testing to see which groups learn better and if there is a difference they'll update everyone that way.

if you spend more time in strengthening the skills, and you lose heart in that, duolingo gives you a signal or a hint that you are weak in that area and you need to work hard in that portion. may be that is why your skills are weakening. not sure of it, but this was what was happening for me.

I've been trying to keep my Spanish tree golden AND move forward. However, I'm bogged down in V Past tense and was getting discouraged. I clicked on "strengthen skills" which I had seen on the web version but is a little bit hidden on the Android app.

I really enjoyed the strengthen lessons. Some items were really easy, some a bit hard, and some really new to me. I liked the mixture and it helped me get some confidence to tackle those past tense verbs!

It also strengthened Adverbs and brought that back to gold on my tree! That was a lovely bonus because those Adverbs were hard for me.

I'm really happy to have that strengthen option!

i noticed my tree colors weakening because i was only doing the lesson practices. Now I do the skills practice and that automatically keeps everything golden. good luck.
