Do I start all over? I am on Crowns now.
Please tell me I do not have to start from scratch as it appears I do. I will die of boredom. I had just reached level 21 and was 4/5's through a golden tree.
The crowns create so much confusion that I cannot tell where I am. It makes it appear that I need to start over.
No need, once you get used to it. First step -at least for me - is to level out my crowns. That means getting an equal number of crowns for each skill. No more hunting for "keep everything golden". Just ore exercises for each level. I like it
I am finding that it is stupid to stay on one skill as it is the same stuff over and over. Ich bin eine Frau. I got that down!
Based on the Duolingo staff, you are not really supposed to stay on one skill. Apparently, the way they envision it is that you level the skill pass to the next and then revisit it after a while...
Now, I am personally in the process of grinding my basic levels skills back to gold... But, in the future, I'd planning to get to crown level one in all skills in a sub-section, then start back at the beginning and refresh-work my way back up. Alternating and strengthening the skills regularly... It would be a bit more motivating if intermediate levels of a skill had more obvious rewards... Maybe just introducing Silver and Bronze levels would do. Maybe even reaching a level in a skill could unlock some kind of special reward: like a one time exercise (for example, an actual text with a reading comprehension test...)
No need to start over ... I just got moved to crowns too, and have been bouncing around quite a bit. I kind of miss the old strength system where strength decays, but am at the same time sort of OK with that.
However, I often liked to do a single topic twice in a row - once to get it right, the second time for speed - and I haven't figured out how to do that one yet.
Just a count of the total number of crowns you've earned. (Right now I've got 238 crowns.)
I think a crown is the total number of level in a language. For example, if you are level 2 in a skill and level 1 in the next, your crown is 2+1 = 3...
If you could learn one language and one language only what language would it be.

Order by crowns or order by strength.
Focus on those non-completed skills, and weak/more difficult skills with crowns L2+L3 where you would like to strengthen.
Please tell me I do not have to start from scratch as it appears I do.
Yes, basically we have to do that, especially if the conversion algorithm (e.g simple vs complex) has not put you into L3 for all skills :-(
Fortunately, you can still "Test out" a single non-locked/coloured (unfinished) crown L0 skill which will give you then L1.
From skills with L1, L2, L3 you currently have to work on lessons to "level-up".
Simply IGNORE the basic skills, as I am sure, that a "Crown L1-L5 test out" feature will be added later in the next (3) 6-12 months.
Luis has commented officially at least in two threads I have read and staff is very well aware that this is currently missing in their early BETA crown implementation.
He said something like "we are already working on several of those suggested features" (probably not all of the suggested ones).
If I were you, I would just re-strengthen my 25/50% non-golden skills I know that I am having problems with, which you can do if you click on the SHOF progress page on the "Practice" button.
You might want to test for yourself if the sentences shown with strengthening are mixed from crowns "L1-L5" or if they focus on the "easier stuff" from shown L1 / L2 skills.
You can then level-up from "L2/L3 selected more difficult skills" depending on your mood, how much fun it is, etc.
We have to be aware that there have to be further "crown iterations" this year (I hope so)!!
Therefore I would not put too much effort into this early stage and level-up all basic stuff from L1/L2 to L3 and further.
This would be IMHO waste of time!
Who knows how the next two crown iterations look like?!?
What does it mean that I am at a level 4 in Basics? How many levels are there?
I think there's five levels possible for each skill. I just came across a pretty good post re transitioning to crowns on the popular discussion tab - it explains a lot of stuff there!
5. I had to dig it a bit and grind my way through a couple of skills to confirm. They appear to be 5 levels in a skill. What is a bit confusing is that not all skills seem to require the same number of practice to level up.
No, you don't start all over again, but you may get new lessons. I have to redo parts of the French tree because the French tree just got an update AND moved to the Crown system.
In order for me to learn something by heart is by writing it down and reading it over and over again
