Help! My profile got infected with this crowns virus

Quite excited, I accepted this new version because an usually update is an improvement - unfortunately this time for me – not so:

Before it was an 'intelligent' system - the lessons, you made many mistakes at were turned from gold to normal faster and then you got the sentences were you made the mistakes again to solve.

Yes, it was annoying when I should do lessons again at the beginning. But soon I found that comfortable: you got your selection for the day and it made sense. Now: I do not remember at which chapter I was weaker and which would be good to redo - so I rather do the ones that sound nice. Now it does not matter if I am good at it already or not, I should practice everything equally.

Before I could choose from several sub-lessons or make a test for the entire lesson if I felt I already knew it - now you have to do 1/8 and when finished - you start with 1/8 again, I am sorry this is just stupid.

Before they at least tried to show your experience level, now you have such a high number of crowns - meaning what?

Now it says they introduced new skill levels, but in reality it is the same lessons but not as an interesting mix of easier and more difficult tasks.

Before the message was: learn a language easily - now its old school: just practice practice practice

Before on first glance I saw everything, plain & simple - now I get a headache just from looking at the start screen. Seeing numbers, circles, colours, crowns. So there are 10+ with 1 crown and 10+ with 2 crowns - in the end I just choose totally randomly

Before it was like a game - now its not so much different from my exercise book from school

Before: I had 4 languages, 2-4 golden lections turned to normal per day - I did those every day. It may sound stupid - but the turning from gold to normal feature helped me to stay motivated. You might say I could raise the daily goal - one problem here: you can't set a daily goal for each language. So if I practice a lot in Italian the goal might have been reached - while I didn't even start the other languages.

So the result: now I am doing only 1-2 lessons per language a day as its just not so much fun any more. And I am dropping the 4th language. As I am pretty good at it anyways and I am feeling just stupid to re-practice easy lessons, which do not consider my weaker words, just to get another "crown".

Wow, even in your crowns FAQ most you say about the update is negative: that there is no connection between the practice button and the tree any more, the learning system ceased to be intelligent by showing you which lessons need practice and that the new system is visually less appealing...

So, dear duolingo team, can you please turn this crown nonsense off again or make if optional - or introduce something new, which is actually an improvement?

Otherwise soon it will be: had been fun while it lasted, for quite some I'm sure

This new version is terrible. I had fun learning with the old version. It was simple and made sense. What's the deal with all these crowns? With the old version I could see a list of what would be covered when clicking on the lesson so I could redo a lesson when I needed a refresher for certain words. Time to switch to another language learning program.

I do not understand why the practice button wasn't enough?

Is it bad?

I realize that many people were looking at the lesson status but practice button should have merged the lessons into a single practice so you do refresh the words you didn't cover.

Imagine if there were thousands of lessons and you needed to go through 50 each day. Instead of just having 2-3 practices with the words you'd forget soon you'd click all over the place.

Maybe now is the time to do something with our totally pointless lingots. I would give my 4000+ collection to have the old system back. How about making it available in the lingot store.

I second that. Though my budget is kinda lower (800+collection).

Totally agree. The test out made it possible for me to decide what I needed and what I did not. Also the game pace, which was what really separated you from other language learning sites, has been lost. Please just tell us, you are going out of business, so we can look for something else.

I have been telling all of my friends to use Duolingo. Not any more.

Having tried it for a couple of days now I am afraid I agree with the others here. In terms of usability this is a step back. I recently told someone how Duolingo had the best UX on the whole web, and now this.

The practice button kept my bars full. It was simple and easy to understand. Then I could choose new content when everything was nice and full.

I appreciate that they've added a whole lot of new content and more detail, but I think they've thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

I totally agree with Chrichrichi and with Jean4Lou ! Except that, as I use Duo through the internet (impossible to obtain any sound through the Android app), I was not even given a choice to accept or refuse this hateful new version.

Theoretically, the idea to propose additional difficulties to the more advanced learners seems interesting. But to destroy all that made Duolingo different and efficient is just a very bad answer to this potential good idea.

Please ! please ! please ! Give us back the intelligent and playful Duo: it is obvious that if it stays like this, there is no interest any more in using a system even more boring and repetitive (and less intelligent) than my awful old school books.

It's really annoying, I liked seeing what percentage fluent I am and now it doesn't tell you. I didn't even agree to the update and I actually preferred the version two updates ago.

i think the programmers who created the update have no relation or experience with completing and practicing courses...

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH chrichrichi AND JEAN4LOU: THIS NEW "CROWN-INFECTED" VERSION IS TERRIBLE! SOMETHING'S LIKE SOME OF THE FUN HAS GONE AWAY. I ALSO WRITE LESS, PRACTISE LESS AND LESS. WITH THE OLDER VERSION I HAD MY ORDER, WHICH I FOLLOWED AND YOU ALWAYS CHECKED MY ADVANCES BUT NOW I'M SOMETHING LIKE LOST. I FEEL I LOST THE CONTROL IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE PROCESS OF LEARNING THE LANGUAGE. AND GUESS I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. C.P.

I actually quite like the crowns... Could someone tell me what is so wrong with it?

April 22, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Yoyoronnie

Um, read the comments? I don’t mind the crowns, I did not mind the bars that told you had not practiced a certain category for a while—the issue is with Health. When I am practicing a skill and I run out of health, I have to go practice something completely different to earn health so I can practice something that I obviously need to practice. The game is based on trial and error to learn, but it punishes you when you do exactly what the game wants you to do. Health is the problem and always has been since they introduced it.

A popular workaround to avoid the "Health" feature

Use Duolingo's web version on your phone/tablet (www.duolingo.com), because it .......

  • does not have the "Health" system and gems

  • will work in the newest version of the Chrome or Firefox browser on your phone or tablet, if you have rather good Wifi (or LTE/4G with an Internet bundle)

For the best typing experience:

  • set the browser to mobile mode
  • use the phone in portrait mode

Thanks, but I know about the work around and I have been using it. Why should I have to though? The app is more functional...everybody is finding a way to work around the health because it is terrible.

April 22, 2018

Another thing with the web version—it is all typing. No recognizing the correct sentence or word, no placing blocks in the correct order—at least lately. I feel like I am trying hard to make this thing work and it is just horrible. The forums are full of people who dislike the health feature and full of moderators that suggest a work around—is there any way to speak directly to the company? This is really horrible.

Unfortunately, this is the company's point of view

Pretty sad, Duolingo is the best right now, but I will switch the second I find something better. A membership to avoid health on the app would be a great place to start if someone that cares is out there reading this.

@Yoyoronnie,

There seems to be an A/B test "Health shield" in the "Duolingo Plus" user group, in which you can disable "Health" in the iOS app.

My personal opinion:

  • "Health" is not neccesary in this version of the "Crowns method", because it is impossible to "binge" in the App now

  • I don't like it, that poor people have to use a punishing teaching method and other people can buy a better teaching method.

April 24, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Yoyoronnie

I appreciate what you say about poor people having to accept a punishing teaching method. I run a community acupuncture clinic where I provide affordable acupuncture on a sliding scale (between $15-$35)...people pay what they can afford, without compromising the service. I don’t check income, people just pay what they feel comfortable with and people pay at every level. Duolingo could do something like this.

April 25, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Yoyoronnie

Extremely mind numbing, slow, and boring. Redundant. Most of my errors are typing errors from try to get through the same boring phrases over and over. Apple, newspaper, read, eat, drink...at least add some variety so we can learn to differentiate the masculinity and verb/definite article changes of other vocabulary...agh!!!

Absolutely agree. Where is the amber and strengthening lessons???? This new version is a piece of ❤❤❤❤. Why is literally EVERY ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ WEBSITE turning worse and worse??? I have lost most of my motivation to continue using this app...
