The way I'm still following the good old gold lesson style using the crown system.
Yesterday I got the new system and really hated it.
But, I used to follow my strength using www.duolingo.eu/USER/progress and it is still working. Now I just see which lessons are not gold and do some work on them until everything is gold shining again.
I hope it is useful for someone.
Thanks for this. I got the crowns yesterday too and, with everything now coloured and hundreds of lessons to do, it's hard to know where to start.
This link show my subjunctive and past conditional verbs that are the most out of date.
Thank you very much for this! At least this way I can finally try to get my golden Spanish tree there although it doesn't officially count anymore... And when I have achieved that and my 1000 day streak, I can say goodbye to Duolingo.
Thank you Danke schon Dankon ! :))
Now I know what to revise .... : a lot ! I didn't practice a lot lately because I couldn't see what units were declining , now I will work more !! Thanks again ;)
Thanks for this. I am doing poorly in French (my high school classes gave me only a passing familiarity with the grammar, but not enough to understand it all). I am very bad in German, and I'm hopelessly lost in Polish. I intended to stop and go through all those lessons from the beginning, and, this time, take notes, but I got crowns before I could start. Now, thanks to you, I am redoing the French, one skill at a time. Soon I'll do the same for the other languages.
Someone should probably get to work on creating a userscript that brings back the display of skill strength and gold skills on our trees (and can display the crowns at the same time — both systems together).
It's definitely not impossible to make such a userscript. I've considered creating it myself, but I'm not sure yet that I want to spend lots of my own time making it since I don't personally mind at all that gold skills are gone. However, it just seems like this would put an end to how many posts there are compaining about gold trees being taken away.
I wonder if anyone is already working on this? ^^
This is AWESOME! Thank you!
I'm very skeptical of the idea that you get to "keep" your level after accomplishing it. This is not a video game... in real life, one's skill level in something atrophies over time and must be strengthened. And this happens much more quickly and significantly when learning something new.
Leveling up in each skill gets progressively more difficult. By a lot. :)
But what if I don't always want a more difficult lesson than the last? What if I want to review the exact same thing I did 2 weeks ago or whenever I last studied a certain lesson? The decay system was great, because it made me review things I had already passed once, and it forced me to actually learn things as opposed to the "forget everything right after the exam is over" approach this new layout is taking.
e. Also thanks OP. I really hated this change. The crown system was the reason I always turned on the computer to do my daily practice instead of the mobile app.
You can even use the www.duolingo.com/skill_name/practice URL when you have opened a single skill!
Currently the "test out" and "practice (strengthen)" buttons (on the top right) fluctuate / refresh three times (new design vs old design vs new crown design), so if you quickly press the "Strengthen" button at the right time, you can also open this skill_name/practice direct URL!
And if you strenghten (within a skill), the 25/50/75/100% percentage meter on the SHOF www.duolingo.eu/USERNAME/progress skills list raises and gives your skill back the GOLDEN (100%) state!
But there is another trick with your own skill tree (kudos to FieryCat introducing this trick to us):
duo.old_web_url_whitelist=["^.+"]; whitelist workaround (we used it to show the hidden "progress quiz" in the lingot store from the discussion page (in the browser web console)).
You can find very good step-by-step detail descriptions how to use it in former "progress quiz test threads": https://www.google.de/search?q=site%3Aduolingo.com+duo.old_web_url_whitelist%3D%5B%22%5E.%2B%22%5D%3B.
After success of enabling the whitelist, if you afterwards click on the "Home" page the very old skill 5-bar strength (before last two updates) tree view will be shown and you ALSO can click on the skills and open each of them in dedicated browser registers!
The tree immediately shows skill strength in the great old UI look and feel (IMHO much better than the updated version!).
The only thing which does not work:
You can't refresh your "Home" page after each "strengthen session" as this would revert the web "Home" code back to crowns view.
Therefore if you want to see 25-100% (golden) progress updates, you definitely have to use the great duolingo.eu SHOF web portal, where you can of course refresh your "/progress" URL to see skill updates (after strengthening).
Thank you so much!! That is just what I needed! I did not even know that existed before.
Quick talk about the progress page on the SHOF site and the skill practice button for the more difficult non-golden skills: www.duolingo.eu/USERNAME/progress
My feeling: For some of my EN-PT skills (even on crown level L2) the listening challenges and introduced sentences got challenging for me (on the web).
I am not sure, but I think that the skill practice (strengthen) button ignores L1-L5, as it is not made especially for crowns??? Could that be?
It looks to me that I now get sentences which have been there before maybe 2-3 or 4 years (thread last updated in discussion forum) but are now shown again.
Of course I can only guess this....or....I had not practiced that much that skill, to remember all it's sentences.
But they are definitely not that short with the "skill practice (strengthen)" button and the male Portuguese speaker (on the web) is speaking soo fast anyways, so I sometimes have to use the turtle button, especially the longer the sentences get.
I don't do any crown level-up L2-L3 lessons....yet because of the crown L2 conversation error mentioned earlier.
Anyone would like to comment how they feel about the hidden "Skill practice" (old strengthen) button and introduced difficulty?
1) Is difficulty round about the same as before?
2) Does it practice the current crown level, e.g L2 (comparable to do a NEW lesson for a skill on L2 to reach L3)?
3) Does it mix sentences from crown levels L1-L5?
I'm not fully understanding your comment. What is the "hidden" skill practice button and where does one find it?
Lol - thanks. I had a long reply typed out and for some reason it all disappeared. Brief summary. My skills were all golden at 100% so there were no barbells. I see them now on my English course where I'm still progressing.
As for difficulty - it seems to be increasing nicely. I am noticing a lot of either mistakes or poor translations which I am flagging.
Skill practice = Skill (old) Strengthen button.
If you open a skill directly (which you can not do on the "Home" page on www.duolingo.com or app) you can see this (old) "Strenghten" button between the "Test Out" button - buttons in a skill flicker / refresh three times:
Test out - strengthen - Test out (e.g 10/20 lessons).
Or you click the button on your duolingo.eu progress page.
Are the crown tree and this link well synchronised ? I can use the blue button or do one lesson in the crown tree but sometimes the unit is not gold again ..it doesn't work all the time .... I was wandering if I need to make very few mistakes to actually regild the unit but after verification : no, it doesn't seem to be the reason. How is it for you ?
I have seen that it takes a while for the web and app to sync since crowns were added. I never noticed this prior to crowns. I am mostly ignoring the crown data, which I don't find helpful and which I don't believe is impacted by doing the skillls strengthening I find most valuable, but I do believe that when I took a skill to level five on the web it showed up as level five in the app after a delay. Sometimes I seem to be able to force a sync by switching between languages I am studying in the app. For instance, if French is not showing my latest web progress on the app, I can switch the app to Spanish or Italian and then back to French and my progress is usually then visible.
Thanks for the reply, I haven't noticed a delay before or I didn't pay enough attention ! Anyway I have been only using the web since I've found this page , so it's not about that , it could have been an explanation.
I'm strengthening the units which are at 25 or 50 % , do they need to be done twice so the unit is gold again ? I mean make 2 lessons on the crown version ..? The tiles are available ( not with the old system blue button ) ,and sometimes I'm a bit lazy so I prefer the tiles. I know I know I'm here to practice my languages.. :))
Edit: indeed some units need 2 or 3 lessons to be gold again. I regild my english and esperanto trees !!! yeahhh ! ;)) Not the german one, more than 50 units to do....grrrr ;)
@rafaujo et al: Follow-up questions regarding how to interpret the data in your link.
My crown tree lists me at crown L5/0 for the Basics1 and Basics2 skills, but as I'm typing this, the below page lists them as follows:
- Basics 1 @ 75% +2 lessons 5
- Learning: Basics 2 @ 75% +1 lesson 5
- Any idea re: how I got to L5/0, while still missing lessons? (I worked them to L5 in the new crowns system)
- Why is Basics2 listed as "learning" when it is at L5/0?
- Is there some sort of "data explanation" page which explains what the data means/how calculated?
(And thank you to Semeltin for pointing me to this thread!)
