"Several soldiers fainted under the sun."

Translation:Plusieurs soldats se sont évanouis sous le soleil.

I was wondering why it wouldn't be "plusiers des soldats" or "plusiers de soldats" rather than "plusieurs soldats?" I thought that you needed "de" or a form of it before nouns that have a quantity assigned to them. For instance, "I have a lot of tomatoes" would be J'ai beaucoup de tomates". I'm confused.
