the pros and cons of the crown system

My Duolingo updated to the crown system and I've read through some of the discussions on the forum and decided to add my own pros and cons of the system.

PROS: The crowns don't disappear. I find it less confusing than the old gold system. In the old gold system, I didn't know why my skills would do this, but they'd often go back to color.

CONS: We can't test out of the skills, and the crown levels are very repetitive. Skills do get weaker if we don't practice them, but I've definitely nailed Basics 1 in French, and even though I don't HAVE to, I want to get my tree completely gold, and it takes lots of time, especially with the basics that are boring and repetitive.

I think what Duolingo can do to compromise the people who don't like the crown system and the people who do is to add test out skills, and/or make the system optional if people continue to dislike the system.

If you have any thoughts and/or agree, please comment them!

That's the bigggest CON I can possibly think of. Spaced repetition is essential. They are working on a way to bring it back though in the future.

The reason they went colorful instead of gold is because it means it is time to refresh your memory of the vocab based on how well you did whilst doing the lesson and how often you practice it. It's all based off the curve of forgetting

If you get to a new level on a skill, the number of the skills gets higher. But in some cases, the number goes too high. For example: the first time the rising to level 2 has 10 lessons. Then for level 3 it is 20, for level 4 it is 30 and for level 5 it is 50! I think that these numbers should be smaller, like for level 5 40 excercises.

im a bit confused whats the difference between the levels of each skill? does it gets harder or just higher levels mean we practiced more?

Hi, this is the French forum, for getting help with French grammar, vocabulary, resources, etc. Could you please edit your original post and use the drop-down list at top left to change the topic from "French" to "Duolingo"? That way it won't clutter up the French forum, and the answers you get might help others who look in Troubleshooting for discussions on how Duolingo works.
