Quality problems in the Hungarian lessons after update?
I've got the feeling that the update (which I don't like at all) came with a lot of quality problems.
- 'plane' is not accepted, I have to type 'airplane'
- 'megy' is sometimes translated with 'she goes', sometime with 'she is going' (example) - only one is accepted, no consistency
- english translations that don't make any sense - 'the bird flies on the tree' as if the bird was riding some sort of magic carpet... er tree
- very long sentences that are only accepted with an 'and'. punch line: there is no 'es' in the Hungarian version
- 'ember' translated as 'man' while 'person' not accepted
- the list of new words is just gone which I liked very much
It that just subjective impression? Biased by that damn update
The backend sentences etc are identical there have been no changes there. But, just to explain, there is no automatic translation going on... Literally every translation is done manually. By humans...! So if the word is missing, then just put it into the discussion page for the sentence here and it will slowly be got to over time by the course volunteers! The sentences are being worked through systematically now to solve the biggest errors, remove completely incorrect sentences and translations, and add in more variations where appropriate.
It will get there eventually!
thank you the reply!
I think I understand that. My (subjective) impression that the update came with a lot of sentences that would have deserved a 2nd thought. An impression that is supported by my Hungarian girlfriend (we sometimes learn together)
There's no change in the sentences - anyway you can set your mind at rest on that one. Just might be a duolingo backend algorithm deliverung you something new and interesting ;-)
How about you guys hand out some XP for correcting sentences. I have a hundred fifty three emails thanking me for feedback and little to show for it besides a sense of smug self-satisfaction.
I wish that happened! But the course is all run by volunteers who are not members of Duolingo! But I've given you one of my Lingots to make up for it :-)
Then how do you know there's no change in the sentences? It seems like there's a noticeable down tick in accepting synonyms to me. Also in only accepting one form of the present tense, as in "they walk" not "they are walking" and vice versa. My general impression was that this had been improving in the last year, now it seems to have gotten generally worse.
If you will forgive me, I suspect it is just a case that the sentences you are now being presented automatically by DL from 'the pot' of sentences just randomly happen to be ones which haven't been corrected by the human volunteers yet.
What I can guarantee you, is that there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes by the volunteers to fix the translations, and that the present continuous ("I am walking') and synonym inclusion is a particular hot button that is now routinely included every time another sentence is fixed...
What is definitely not happening, is removing synonyms or present continuous! That is just luck of the draw in this beta phase of the language course.
Best of luck and keep going! I finally worked my way through the entire course recently and I am now finding it works a lot better for me as I understand how it works. The middle section is tough though! It really is, do keep going as the end is easier :-)
I'm going through the course for the third time. You seem to know what's up, so I trust you; It's possible I didn't remember how frustrating the middle of the course is, since I also spent a lot of time just 'strengthening' until the inclusion of the crown system.
I found the middle of the course super frustrating personally. I really did! It's why I volunteered to be one of the people helping to fix it :-) There are errors, which is why it is still a beta course.
Part of the issue is that when the course was built, DL was not really very suitable for case based agglutinative non-indo-european languages like Hungarian. And so a fair few compromises were made to make it work. The guys who created it did a wonderful job in many respects, but they made some errors in terms of how the course was structured. Over time, these are being fixed but it is a big job! It is getting much better, but still takes time!
However, despite all of that, I still find it is far and away the best Hungarian course out there for me, and believe me, I have tried a lot of them!
Do please keep going at it. If it is any help, I found that, once I accepted the wonderful world of flying kindergarten teachers and crazy Italian cooks, then I really enjoyed it a lot more and found the challenge of accurately understanding the sentences to be much more fun. That said, some of the sentences are just too hard, so what I do is to I keep the discussion pages open, and when I spot one which looks like it is going to catch me out too many times, I first try a translation, then look it up on the discussions before I hit the continue button, so I don't end up getting too frustrated with something too insane and difficult!
