Why does Duolingo app need contacts permissions when signing in with Google?
Can't sign in without giving permissions to contacts.
Please, take care of your personal internet safety:
never give Apps permission to use your Contacts, Storage etc. unless it is really necessary in that App
(e.g. in a "Contacts App; Duolingo Plus needs access to your Storage)
never sign into your Duolingo account by using another account (Google, Facebook etc)
never share your Duolingo data in a LinkedIn profile etc.
In general: it is also safer to make your data anonymous, by using an anonymous username, avatar and bio in Duolingo.
I imagine they want your permission to contact your friends so they can invite them to Duolingo. I’m only guessing though, what happens if you don’t allow them acces?

Duolingo's Android App does not need the user's permission to "Contacts", if you sign in via "username + password"
