When should a number take a prefix? If it were "three shoes", I guess the answer would be viatu vitatu. So why is the answer here not viatu visaba?

The numbers that take prefixes are:

  1. -moja
  2. -wili (mbili in the N class)
  3. -tatu
  4. -nne
  5. -tano
  6. (no prefix, from Arabic)
  7. (no prefix, from Arabic)
  8. -nane
  9. (no prefix, from Arabic)
  10. (Bantu, but no prefix)

Any number that ends in one of these words will also take a prefix.

kiatu kimoja = one shoe
viatu viwili = two shoes
viatu vitatu = three shoes
viatu vinne = four shoes
viatu vitano = five shoes
viatu sita = six shoes
viatu saba = seven shoes
viatu vinane = eight shoes
viatu tisa = nine shoes
viatu kumi = ten shoes
viatu kumi na kimoja = eleven shoes
viatu kumi na viwili = twelve shoes
viatu kumi na vitatu = thirteen shoes
...
viatu mia mbili thelathini na vinane = two hundred and thirty-eight shoes
viatu mia mbili thelathini na tisa = two hundred and thirty-nine shoes
viatu mia mbili arobaini = two hundred and forty shoes
viatu mia mbili arobaini na kimoja = two hundred and forty-one shoes
