A few days ago I switched to crown levels. I must say that over all I am not happy with the experience. Starting out I was pleased with the new challenge after having maxed out at level 25 and 67% fluency. I soon noticed that those lingots or jewels which had built up over many months, with nothing to spend them on, were quickly being used up on health refills. Even review lessons are not counted as review since you are on the next crown level. I also find myself spending as much time watching Panda-Pop adds as I am doing Spanish. Now I'm out of lingots and out of health so can't do any lessons. Please fix this as I have started other languages and want to be able to do lessons without fear of making mistakes and double-checking everything with Google translate.

yeah, from what I have heard of the health system, it sounds kind of rubbish.

Especially if you want to progress down the tree.

Can you not do older lessons to grow your health back?

The health system is a disaster and needs to go. The only good feature is that it usually replenishes overnight.

I discovered that you can hit the health button and then 'practice' to earn health but this does not advance your crown levels and you have no control over which lessons you review when you do that. The desktop version doesn't have this issue as there is no health bar. Doing old lessons isn't an option because they all count as new lessons in the next crown level.

I am having the same experience with Spanish, and a lot of the errors are not actually wrong, they are listed as alternate meanings on the mouseover lists

Alternate meanings are not necessarily right for every sentence. Consider it like a dictionary where you pick the meaning that best fits the sentence. I also think that the Health is not a feature that I would like, but I don't have it on the web version.

many of the spanish lessons that have been added are full of mistranslations and errors. You cannot intimidate students with generalities. The stuff is just wrong and obviously unvetted. It has been very poorly designed.

The problem is with how the health system interacts with crowns. I don't have the health system (it must be an A/B test) but from what I understand, since crowns has been implemented you cannot earn health back by practicing.

A few suggestions:
Get some early levels up to crown 5 and see if re-doing them builds your health back.
Do you have a "strengthen" icon in your version of the app (looks like dumbbells)? If so, try using that practice feature to see if you can build health that way.
Ditch the app and use the website until they fix this.

The strengthen icon seems to have been replaced with the Health tab which has a practice button on it and Duolingo says you can use that to bring up your health. Whether it works or not, I do not know.

I want to repeat segments without advancing is I can thoroughly learn the material. HELP. Every time I complete a segment it advances and I don’t want to advance. How can I repeat a segment without moving up a level?

yes they need to do away with the health bar! I work both on my Computer which doesn't have the health bar. I travel a lot and I spend a lot of time each day working on my IPhone or iPad and because the buttons are small I hit the wrong key or maybe even two keys and I loose health that way. I think that it's wrong to make it where we can't practice. Do away with the health bar! Some might say that we need to fully learn each level before moving on, and i agree. well I have redone the tree 10 times and I sometimes will practice one level many times before moving to the next but then come back and redo the levels again and again to reinforce my knowledge.

Why did I lose 4 crowns (from 5 to 1) on one of my spanish language skills? I thought there was no plan for decay with the crown system. This sucks. The hundreds of repetitions of the same damn sentences just to master a single skill, and then it all disappears? What's the point? Is duo a sadist? I can no longer recommend this to other people, nor am i motivated to continue it myself. There are plenty of options out there that don't require 2000 repetitions in order to master one level, especially with wrong translations. Bad move.

Were you on an app and which? The only thing I can think of is that if you are on an app that you need to sync with the web version at some point. I mean that you have to have access to the internet at some time for the app to update your progress to the main program. I don’t know if that has anything to do with what happened to you though. You might need to put in a bug report, but get all the specifics for them.

Check this out www.duome.eu/guomashi/profile This site does show the spaced repetition feature and which skills have decayed to which percent. You can see which skills are golden for which you only need 1 crown and which skills have 5 crowns too.

The other question is whether the Spanish team has added more content to the tree which might affect things as well. When my French tree was updated many of my skills had to be redone, but they made the update before crowns, so I don’t know what would happen now.

Which skill did you lose 4 crowns from?

My problem with this new system is: I can not figure out how to repeat a lesson. I go through a lesson and it makes me advance immediately and I don’t want to advance. Also no matter how many times I hit the review button there is no review. Your problem seems to be; you are stuck repeating a lesson and can not advance.

Do you have a button that says “review”? Which app are you on? Depending on the skill you are on there will be a number of lessons to do to get up to the next Crown level, you press the Start button to start the lesson. You are stuck repeating the skill until you reach Level 1 then you are free to go on down the tree to a different skill or you can continue to work on this same skill until you reach level 5 at which point the Timed Practice will be back if you had that and the regular Practice also. I think you are calling a skill a lesson when each skill is full of lessons. I miss the old lessons as well though with their handy dandy Redo buttons. Please read the Crowns FAQ for a workaround that users have found.

I remember one way is to click on the Start button and look at the URL above and delete the number at the end and replace it with the word practice. This works great on a computer where you can see the URL at the top of the tab for this page. On my iPad, I do not see the URL at the top of my Safari page, just the name of the page. There is another workaround that involves www.duome.eu/. Put your username next then put /profile. Here you click on the dumbbell icon next to the skill that you want to practice. Practicing will not advance your crown level. So for you that would be www.duome.eu/vencedor549787/profile This accesses the spaced repetition feature and you can see which skills are at 100% and which skills need practice and those that need practice will have the dumbbells next to them that you can click on to practice. Clicking on the skill name will redirect you back to Crowns, so be sure to click on the dumbbell instead. You don’t have that many that are NOT gold (at 100%) and already started.
