Catalan for English speakers Catalán para hablantes de inglés

Catalan is very easy to learn if you know a lot of Spanish and to be honest i'm a little tired of having to translate in my head twice just to learn Catalan.

El catalán es muy fácil de aprender si conoces mucho español y para ser sincero, estoy cansado de traducir en mi cabeza dos veces solo para aprender catalán

It is a bit frustrating. I fell like I end up practicing my Spanish and not really learn any Catalan.

That's what I felt about English doing the Spanish subjunctives, the exercises are full of people who say they find the Spanish clear but are confused with the English translation, due to poor specimen answers or their dialect which avoids subjunctive.

Yes, both are similar but Catalan belongs to another branch of the romance languages called occitan-romance, therefore Catalan is more related to Provenzal dialect of Southeast France than Spanish.

Wouldn't it be better to get fluent ie think in Spanish, then do Catalan.

You're saying Catalan is easy if you know a lot of Spanish, but are also saying, you have to translate Spanish into English to understand it and it is tiring.

Yes there is very little reason to learn Catalan as an outsider that speaks no Spanish to be honest.

You are much better off as a language learner improving your Spanish because it is spoken in so many parts, including Catalonia- Catalan is only really spoken in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

It's like trying to learn Occitan instead of French. Why would you do this?

I hate to sound anti-catalan because I love Catalonia and the Catalan people but I feel that if your goal is to learn an interesting regional language you should learn Basque since it is a true language isolate- sadly Basque is not on Duolingo.

I know there isn't exactly a reason to learn Catalan but it would be nice to know mostly because i think the language is pretty and its not just spoken in Catalonia. It's not exactly translating twice in my head as much as it is just getting frustrated that I have to practice Spanish and then go and try to learn Catalan but then end up practicing Spanish again lol.

i'm saying like people who don't want to learn Spanish or need a break from learning it should be able to do it if they want without having to know Spanish and like say someone has a family that speaks Catalan and they don't but they want to learn it's hard to do that if you don't know Spanish and have no interest in learning Spanish.

Hi man. You don't need know spanish for to learn catalan language. Both are absolutely differents. I'm allude to catalan language well spoken, not the soup Spanish /Catalan language that is the most people speak. Best wishes. Ferran

Mayormente todo los catalanes, especialmente los jóvenes, saben castellano, no hay mucho razón a aprender Catalán si no estás viviendo o trabajando en Catalonia. Y es tan similar a castellano que no se debe aprender lo en otro idioma. En mi opinó.

If you have to translate in your head twice then you don't really know Spanish yet sorry to say. Stop the Catalan (for spanish speakers) course in my opinion and focus on getting fluent in Spanish. Almost everyone in Catalonia except very old people speaks Spanish anyways.

Actually, Catalan is spoken in many more places than Catalonia, and not only in Spain. It is true that virtually every Catalan speaker is bilingual, but Spanish is not always the other language they speak. You can find Catalan speakers in France, speaking both French and Catalan (or even Occitan); or in Sardinia (Italy) and finding Catalan speakers also speaking Italian (and maybe also Sardinian). In Andorra, where Catalan is the only official language, you can find Catalan speakers who speak also French, Spanish or even Portuguese (around 15% of Andorran people have Portuguese origins).

Consider me educated! I still think that if your goal is communication that Spanish/French/Italian would be more useful though.

¿Por qué dices esto si sabes que no es cierto? Con poco que se moleste en contrastar, descubrirá que lo que dices es anecdótico.

Bueno en realidad si hablas un buen catalán hay muchas diferencias. Ahora como en todos los idiomas, ingles, castellano, francés...hay mucha mezcla.

You can try parla.cat. It's free. The course is mostly in catalan, and the bits that aren't, are available in English. Also, the course is very comprehensive, although it's not "gamified" as duolingo.

You can do some Catalan learning from English using Clozemaster to give you a change from the double translation - it doesn't teach quite from basics the way Duo does but it is good on the way people actually talk. And it's free for the basics, though you can pay for extras.

You can click on the word and it prompts the Spanish meaning. If you don't know enough Spanish, Catalan is so similar to it that you can find out the correct Spanish meaning without real knowledge.
