The placement of grammatical objects in French

I am not quite sure about this and therefore want to check it with the community. I have noticed that if the grammatical object is a noun, the word order is subject-predicative-object: Je mange une pomme. However, it seems that when the object is a pronoun, the word order is subject-object-predicative: Je la mange. Is it really so or have I misunderstood this matter? Thankful for any help!
