Alex isn't necessarily a short form of Alexander, it is also a short form for Alexandra

"woman" = Frau
"lady" = Dame

The difference is the level of formality. That's how it's translated in this course.

Maybe the cartoon person is clarifying that Alex ( which could male or female) is indeed a female. Maybe everyone in these comments stick to their own language.

It is not a matter of sticking to their own language, what is being discussed is not gender according to the German language, but a universal language that people have from pictures or images.
