Notice some forum changes? Here's what's new!

Hi everyone,

The Duolingo website has been going through many changes over the years, and some of you might have noticed that the forum has not been keeping up with those updates. This means that there have been features and improvements that we wanted to make, but couldn’t… at least not until the forum was up to speed. (remember the update that had to happen before porting certain Asian languages to the website?)

In the last few months, DarthDuo has been leading the effort on improving this—and within the coming weeks, some of you will start noticing a few changes in how the forum looks. Although this was a big project on our end, what you should notice are purely visual changes, such as buttons, fonts and spacing looking slightly different. The mobile forum experience of the site should be easier to navigate, and many of you should also notice improvements in forum loading speeds, especially when it comes to megathreads like karint’s big Crowns FAQ.

While we are talking forum changes... our team is aware of many outstanding bugs that were introduced in the earlier migration of the "invisible" back-end parts of the forum; and we want to clarify that this front-end change does not fix those bugs. While this effort is advancing improvements to forum usability, we want to temper expectations and clearly state that it doesn't solve everything at once. The change will, however, make it easier for our team to address those outstanding issues that we've been wanting to tackle. We all want those issues fixed—there are people working on those pending bugs, as well as other issues that are not necessarily forum-related but are possibly more urgent, so we really appreciate your patience as we allow different teams address those as quickly as they each can. This new forum look is also unrelated to Bots, Crowns, and other recent Duolingo updates (you can read about some of these and find additional links in our Help Page). To keep this thread helpful to the relevant teams and other users, we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project.

We expect this project will be a welcome change, and hope it will breathe new life into the forums, opening the way for various teams at Duolingo to address concerns and make new improvements in the coming months. We’re excited to say it is now ready for testing and we are happy to share this promising update with you (we plan to roll it out slowly to a small number of users, starting this week, to make sure nothing breaks and iron out any issues we see along the way). What do you notice? When you get the update, you are invited to help us out by sharing anything related to this that seems strange, just let us know in the comments! =]

Thanks to the involved staff members, to the moderators who helped us test it, and to you for being with us. Happy discussions!

Will this be translated and posted to all the non-English forums?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KatrinaTheLamia

Oh... my... gosh! This is genius! They are distracting the Bikeshedding from discussions on Crowns, Bots, Youth Safety, forum performance, fluency, lesson orientation and the like into THIS update.

It is a Bikeshed Honeypot! Rather than have people ignoring system critical discussions by complaining the bike shed is the wrong colour... they set up a trap, to lure all the people who are inclined to complain about the bike shed being the wrong colour (which, BTW, the bike shed totally is the wrong colour) into a thread specifically about such things...

It is genius--I wish I had thought of such a tactic. TAKE ALL MY LINGOTS!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rivers2Seas

Hilarious, Katrina!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sparklehappy

I'm especially looking forward to the improvement of loading speeds with the new and improved forum! I do have a question though. In the screenshot, the tabs for organizing discussions don't include one for "followed" discussions... was this addressed in another discussion I'm not aware of/am I missing something? I ask because a lot of my followed discussions contain information I'd like to eventually transfer into my notes, and I don't want to lose them...

Many thanks to all who helped bring this change about!! :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

This is a picture of the Dutch forum and they had added sometime ago “Sentence Discussions” instead of “Followed” in the specific language discussions as perhaps it might be more useful, but the “Followed” discussions are still on the main Duolingo discussion forum. I too hope that it is not their intention to omit “Followed” from the main Discussion page.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

they had added sometime ago “Sentence Discussions”

FYI, the "Sentences" tab has been there for years (on courses' forums only, of course). Except for a period of approx. 1 month in the past where the tab went AWOL (but only for approx. one month).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Yes, a long time ago then. I knew it was not recent. The point was that the Followed tab is not available there. I have been on Duolingo since 8-12-2013 as allintolearning so I do remember a time when it was different.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jonathangrant00

Yay! New updates! Thank you! I haven't noticed much except my flag background seems to be messed up on Discussion now.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Carreng17

Mine as well. It finally showed up and now it's constantly flickering out...hmmm

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I haven't noticed much

It's normal since you a priori don't have yet the new version yet. ;)
Cf. the OP:

and within the coming weeks, some of you will start noticing a few changes in how the forum looks

Note: the colouring is from me.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/FrenchCamille

I love new updates so this should be quite fun ! So far I haven't noticed anything other than the lingot counter .

  • 2074

Great news, a few weeks ago I already noticed the bug with giving lingots was fixed. It's nice that there is a lot of development going on behind the screens.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/VastOcean

多谢 (many thanks) Duolingo team!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

I've noticed the sidebar with links to other discussions related to the discussion at hand missing sometimes and the post covering the whole page instead of the middle. Is this an A/B test? I'm not sure I like that.

Thanks for the update.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vivisaurus

No, I believe that usually happens when the post is new and it hasn't quite decided on a list of related posts to display. =] (that is not related to the changes mentioned above)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

Ok, thanks! I noticed it around the time crowns was coming out and have only seen it with a new post since. Don't know if the posts I was viewing were new ones or what.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

@All, noticed the following edit (made around 2018-04-17 21:27 UTC)?

[edit] We have now started the rollout to a tiny portion of users! Keep your eyes peeled, we will start increasing the % slowly if all goes smoothly. ☆゚.*・。゚

So some of us should now start to have access to this new version of this forums hence see some visual changes and that the pages load faster (for them) than before.

Reminder: this ONLY concerns forum pages, not any other Duo page.
If you don't see any change (on forums), then you're not yet under the new version (I'm not, for example).
If you see changes in pages that are not forum pages, then it has no link we the changes discussed in this this discussion.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xMira_

sigh If only you mods had a "pin comment" command.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

A new observation: Downvoted comments are currently not hidden in the new forum format, no matter how many downvotes they have.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kay.lee.831

Awesome!!! I hope I'm one of the first to get the update! I love new changes. Keep doing what you do best, Duo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/tstte

So my only real problem with the newer forums is that I can no longer go to the discussion board of a particular sentence or phrase, and scroll over a word to get a translation/click on the word to see all of it's forms. First person/past/present etc.

If this can be fixed I would greatly appreciate it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sliotar.

Wow, they've even managed to remove hints from the sentence discussions now!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HelpfulDuo

Hi! I agree they are useful and I would also love to have them restored -- however the hints were removed by a different, earlier change because of technical issues (way before the newer forums were rolled out). That necessary change was unfortunate, but also unrelated to the "newer forums".

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/dlhgl
  • 1534

The hints are still there on the old forum, see my screenshots in this post. And you can still click on a word to see a page with more info about this word.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CatherineK153278

Please bring it back. Any time I am learning a new topic I use/d it to try and understand how the sentence is translated rather than just route learning a new sentence.

I have been doing revision since the whole crowns change over and it was only today with new material that I noticed it was gone.

If I am saying a sentence or typing what I hear there is nowhere else to see the hints.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Brid-Eilis

I like the fonts and style of the forums as they already are. But if you are changing fonts across the board, could you make the print in the Hebrew course bigger and clearer. I only do the Hebrew course on my tablet so that the screen will be nearer my eyes, but I prefer the desktop computer for all the other courses. Actually the Hebrew letters look smaller than the English font. It's hard for old eyes. And zooming in isn't the solution.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LiL_Benny1

is ur name brigit of brig-hig

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Brid-Eilis

It is the older spelling of "Bríd". When a website doesn't allow me to use accents on usernames I use this spelling. In the 1950s spelling reform a lot of silent letters like GH were dropped from Irish. So instead of the GH in my name the i was accented instead. Bríd = Brighid, the pronunciation is the same, similar to "Breed" in English.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BellieShell_

Dang. I've been on the Duolingo website since late 2014 and it's changed so much since then. Haven't been on this site for about 2 yrs .or so. I realize that as Duolingo has become more popular, change is guaranteed. But ah, I miss the old Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Seattle_Scott

I appreciate the transparency in changes and expectations at Duo. Thanks. The changes have so far all been good, even if a bit of a bumpy ride at first. Bravo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Yottskry

The changes are always fait accomplis. There's no transparency until after the event.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

A couple of observations:

  1. It used to be that we could post a URL and it would turn into a hyperlink automatically. All of those bare URLs are currently just normal, non-hyperlinked text (at least in Chrome).

  2. Direct links to comments don't work. This means, for example, that clicking the button in an e-mail notification doesn't bring the user to the new comment. (Edit: It appears this could be specific to Chrome.)

  3. A further consequence of 1 and 2 is that the thousands of direct links to previous comments that are currently in the forums are now broken. I, for one, sometimes "answer" a question by simply posting the URL of a comment that has already answered it, and even if I do compose an answer, I often refer back to old comments. (A userscript by FieryCat made it easy to right-click and copy the comment's URL. That script no longer does anything.) At the moment, all of those links are broken.

I hope this will be fixed. I'd hate to see so much of my previous work helping other learners be rendered useless.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

A further observation:

At least as I'm now experiencing it, it's no longer possible to go to a Duolingo page in a web browser, press Ctrl-F, and search for all instances of a piece of text, as the page doesn't load completely.

Instead, to catch everything, one has to scroll all the way to the bottom to load everything first, and then search, and that extra scrolling takes much longer than the pre-change loading time.

This makes the forums much less friendly for users like me who search first and ask a question only if the answer isn't already present, and I suspect will make many people not bother to search before posting (or not do a full search), and instead simply post a repeat question, which happens a lot as it is, but the new format will encourage semi-lazy users to do it more often, I suspect.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Trick: load the URL of any specific comment of the discussion(°) this will directly load all the comments at once.

This makes the forums much less friendly for users like me who search first and ask a question only if the answer isn't already present,

Better to read entire discussion (even if long) as you may not be searching the exact word one as used to word the same question.
Searching is best than just publishing, reading it all is even better. ;)

and I suspect will make many people not bother to search before posting (or not do a full search), and instead simply post a repeat question, which happens a lot as it is, but the new format will encourage semi-lazy users to do it more often, I suspect.

I don't think it'll change a lot. I think you're already in a very very tiny minority by taking the time to search.
So only the tiny set of users who were searching but not reading all will risk to go towards "publishing without checking first".

The ideal solution would be that when you write a comment, at the moment of publishing it, the system doesn't publish it but (strongly-)insists if this, that or that comments (that the system detects as similar) wouldn't be about the exact same question and strongly reminds that if it's the case to not post anything new (not even "same question" nor "+1", etc.) but just upvote.

(°) from the email link, for instance and, of course, not forgetting to do

If I change the link in my e-mail from "http://www.duolingo..." to "forum.duolingo..." I get directly to the new comment.

as you are already under the new version of the forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

With regard to your footnote, that's a workaround that simply needs to be made automatic, and I'll again refer readers back to my other comment that notes a redirect not working in Chrome.

As for your comment about reading instead of searching, some pages are simply not maintained, and are full of irrelevant nonsense. That said, I search first in several different ways, and move on to reading if I find nothing, and then post. I hope that clears things up.

I think they've decided against warning people about cluttering up the pages. There used to be an explicit warning. It's gone now.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

With regard to your footnote, that's a workaround that simply needs to be made automatic

Again, there is no big reason to make it automatic given that once everyone will be under the ne forums [they'll change the links in emails for the new domain and] it'll work fine.
Doing the change now would make the link work for a minority and not work for the majority (as the majority of us is still under the old version). So it's just a question of time before it'll work for everyone.
Of course, as said in other comments, the best for the duration of the A/B test would be that the generation of the email takes into account one's account property (namely "is_under_the_new_forums": yes/no) to control which domain to put in the URL. But, again, as the A/B test is not a "forever" situation I don't see Duo making such change in their algorithm (which would to have be changed back once the A/B test ends as this property on each account will not exist anymore).

As for your comment about reading instead of searching, some pages are simply not maintained, and are full of irrelevant nonsense.

Reading them is a good way to participate in cleaning that by downvoting all the non-sense : if few do that, the comments will be hidden.

I think they've decided against warning people about cluttering up the pages. There used to be an explicit warning. It's gone now.

Yes. I've shared with Duo the bad idea it was to remove it. :(
And we're several forum moderators and contributors who asked them to put it back.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

When everyone has the new forums, there will still be the problem of the old links in the forums. This is a simple concept. You seem to want to undermine the notion that Duolingo should provide backwards compatibility. Aren't you a user like the rest of us?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

When everyone has the new forums, there will still be the problem of the old links in the forums.

Not if Duo does the one time action I suggested in this other comment, which is a simple concept too.

I didn't mentioned it here becasue I was answering to your comment which itself answered specifically to my footnote which footnote was specifically about links in emails, hence not about old links in the forums.

You seem like you want to undermine the notion that Duolingo should provide backwards compatibility.

No, I provide what is, IMO, a better alternative for making past links work than to keep with auto-generated links from text : that Duo changes them all at once. Then that Duo stops to try to convert text into URL and instead let users have the control on what they write (via embedded links). And for the old non-embedded ones: readers can still copy-paste the text-link so the link "works" (as in "is correct) and not altered (hence not even copy-pastable).

  • text auto-converted to links:
    • advantage [small, IMO]: the creator of the link doesn't have to create an embedded link
    • disadvantage [big, IMO]: it messes with links and don't let users to control what they write. I sometimes share part of an URL that I don't want to be transformed into an clickable one but something out of my control display my comment in a way I cannot control.
  • having only embedded links created by users displayed as clickable-links:
    • advantage [big, IMO]: no messes with links and let users to control how will be displayed what they write.
    • disadvantage [big, IMO]: the creator of the link has [to take the habit] to create an embedded link

Aren't you a user like the rest of us?

Yes I am, and that's why, like any of us, I share what is IMHO the best option/solution.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

There are also browser bookmarks and external links to Duolingo to consider. IMO, your suggestion is not the best in this case.

You can display characters that Duo would otherwise mess with by "escaping" them with a backslash. E.g.: \&

(It's not perfect. Duolingo still needs work in this area.)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

You can display characters that Duo would otherwise mess with by "escaping" them with a backslash. E.g.: \&

Yes, this workaround works perfectly for text (and I use it all the time) but it unfortunately doesn't work inside links (embedded or not). So it's not a working workaround for our issue on links.

There are also browser bookmarks and external links to Duolingo to consider.

The bookmarks can be updated (once for each) by users when they remark they don't work anymore.
I personally don't consider it would be a top criteria on Duo's choices about what to do.

Same for links posted on external websites, IMHO.
Not saying Duo shouldn't consider it at all, but not as being a top-priority criteria. Just my opinion.

P.S.: And, yes, I have plenty of bookmarks myself, I'll just update them.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

I didn’t even know how to do that in the first place. I wouldn’t even mind scrolling down. I was using the discussion search box and then scrolling down.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Automatic hyperlinking of URLs is back now, so, with the earlier redirect fix, it appears that the concerns in my initial comment have been entirely dealt with. While my comment may have had nothing to do with it, I appreciate the fix!

(I imagine FieryCat will update his script in due course.)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

I just clicked on the link in my e-mail on my itablet to get right here to the comment though. Which platform are you on? I never use hyperlink just regular page addresses and those still work also.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

I'm using Chrome on Windows 10. I get to the discussion page but not the individual comment.

As it turns out, if I change the link in my e-mail from "www.duolingo..." to "forum.duolingo..." I get directly to the new comment.

Also, I see the URL in the address bar in Chrome making that change automatically (probably as a result of Duolingo's instructions to the browser), but it also changes the "=" to "%3D". If I change that back to "=" then I get to the specific comment.

So it looks like there's some tweaking to do, to make this all work in Chrome.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

I used Safari on my itablet and was able to get here. I also like to use Chrome on my laptop with Windows 7. I am trying that now and the pages are running really slowly. I wonder why? Maybe they are in the process of tweaking something or maybe I am still on the old system?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

(I’m replying here because the comment which I’m actually replying to doesn’t have a Reply link; chalk another one up to the forum software here.)

Wow, it won’t let me add “comment&” between “from_email=“ and “comment_id”. I put it in, but the minute I hit the Save button, it disappears!

The handling of ampersands is a longstanding bug in the forum software here; my workaround has been to use a URL shortening service for any URL with an ampersand, because the shortened URL will have no ampersands to get mangled here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

As it turns out, if I change the link in my e-mail from "http://www.duolingo..." to "forum.duolingo..." I get directly to the new comment.

Yes, the links in email are still under the old format. Likely because the vast majority of us are still under the old version of the forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Even when that changes, it appears that there's an attempted automatic redirect already, but it doesn't work with Chrome, as I mentioned, and if that's not fixed, the problem will still cause all of the old direct links already in comments in the discussion forums not to work, at least in Chrome.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Jrikhal, how do we know the URL from a button? The address is not listed. On my iPad in Safari browser, again I cannot see the URL address. Wait, I can bookmark the location and then drag the bookmark back to a page to show someone else. https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26969218$from_email=comment_id=27025151 There it is, but that wasn’t too obvious for most users. I still can get directly to a comment (so that is how it is supposed to look. No, turns out that some of the address is missing see jrikhal below) So, will we have to add “forum.” Just before Duolingo when everyone has the new forum?

https://www.forum.duolingo.com/comment/26969218$from_email=comment_id=27025151

I tried to test it out and my ipad wouldn’t let me go there. They said that it was not a private website and someone might try to steal my financial or personal information there!

Added to answer below: so the browser truncated the address in my bookmark? This is terrible! No, there is no right mouse button on an ipad, you click on the button with your finger. I will add that in: https://www.forum.duolingo.com/comment/26969218$from_email=comment_id=27025151 Wow, it won’t let me add “comment&” between “from_email=“ and “comment_id”. I put it in, but the minute I hit the Save button, it disappears!

Hovering does work, you put your finger on the button, but don’t tap the screen to see the address.

Great I copied the correct URL from you, but I don’t know how to paste it into the Safari browser and I will never remember all that correctly. You are right! I need to go to the laptop.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Indeed, we'll need little by little to update all our links.

But they will work if people don't click but copy the link, edit it, then load the edited version. This trick will little by little be known and become the norm.
In case Duo doesn't patch things.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Jrikhal, how do we know the URL from a button?

In most browsers, when you hover over a embedded link/button, the associated URL will be displayed somewhere (on bottom-left corner for Chrome, for example).
If your browser don't have that, then most browsers let you right-click on a button/embedded link and then copy the URL of the link.

If there is no way to do a right-click on iPad and your iPad browser doesn't display somewhere the URL when you hover over the button/embedded link... I fear to have no other solutions than to recommend to use Duo on a computer (where there are more options, like Tips, for one).

https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26969218$from_email=comment_id=27025151

is wrong there is a comment& missing => https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26969218$from_email=comment&comment_id=27025151

That's one of the issue with the system trying to automatically created links => it fails with some characters (I had to play with formatting quite a lot to be able to display it correctly above). Would be better to just display as text links except if the user create an embedded link himself/herself.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal
  1. It's a good habit to create oneself the links [text](URL) (which can of course be used as [URL](URL) if you want the displayed text to be the URL itself.
Not saying that Duo shouldn't make them work too, just that better to control thing oneself than relying on a setup on Duo's side, which could change.
  2. I don't think it's specific to any browser. But rather that the links in emails are those with the URL of the old/current forums and not the new URL of the new forums.
The vast majority of us are still under the old version so it can make sense to still have the links using the old URLs.
Of course, it'd be even better if the URL in the email would depend on if you're under the new forums or the old ones.
  3. Create your own link (cf. 1.) and it should be fine for your future comments.

EDIT (17 min later): I just tested and the conversion into clickable link of an URL(°) is not working anymore on the old version of the forums neither. At least for me.

(°) written as text of course, not as a link like [text](URL)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

A consequence of using [text](URL) is that Android users may not be able to use those links -- I've heard reports that this results in links which are not clickable for them, and have heard as a rationale that it's not easy for them to verify the destination of a link without following it (no "hovering" without a mouse!) and that therefore only literal links will work for them.

Whether preventing Android/mobile users from following your links is a disadvantage or whether it's something that might make them use the desktop version where tips+notes are more easily accessible is up to you.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

That's why I also join to my comments --- in Sentence Discussions (only place that Android users can read, AFAI'veBeenTold) --- with links an explanation at the bottom about how to open them on an Android device, using the webversion of their device.

In the meantime, [text](URL) is far more user-friendly to read (at least to me) than a long link in the middle of a sentence (and, yes, I often put a lot of links on various part, so putting them all at the end isn't really an option). ;)

I didn't think about it as a way to (hope to) try having them using as much as possible the desktop version, but it's indeed a good argument. ;)

Of course, the best would be that Duo makes things consistent and markdown work on all platforms.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

I know how to create your clickable links, but I prefer the unhidden links as I don’t have to hover over them just to see where they are going and risk accidentally clicking on them. I like to readily see where I am going. It is only user friendly to those who trust where you might send them. What if it is a link that I have already been to? How do I know from your button? So, I have to hover over everything you make which is one more step for me to do. Friendly is when I don’t have to take extra steps just so you can feel like your comments look neater. This is just another point of view on the clickable links. Everyone should do what works best for them. I will be able to see at a glance which links I will need to update.

The unhidden link can easily be copied too for those who want to.

However, some links do need to be safeguarded from change. So, a link that cannot work directly will have to be created your way.

There is still nothing I hate more than someone telling me to click here without indicating exactly where I am going which certainly can be done. I feel like a child that is being told what to do and the person condescendingly gives the link as though that person thinks they know what is best for me when it might be a link that I have already been to. I want to know where you are sending me, always.

P.S. jrikhal Thank you for your patience with me! In answer to below, you cannot right-click from a phone, so you cannot copy that link so easily. Unless you know how or what to do on a phone or tablet that is the same as your “right-click” ?

And yes, when I have a choice I will use another visible link from someone else rather than the button link that I will have to hover over first.

Also that is great if there is nothing wrong with the embedded link. You see I remember pressing on buttons that didn’t work and I had to then complain to the person who created it. I would rather use a direct link, but I am sure that plenty of others are extremely grateful for your buttons, so don’t mind me.

Finally, I have found out how you “right-click” on the iPad, tap and hold equals it. Tap to go there but tap and hold to copy it. So close, could be why it is not so easy. I cannot tell you how many times I have wanted to click the home button, but stayed too long and ended up with Siri when I didn’t want her. I do miss the laptop. I have also realized that I have been copying sites to my favorites, or bookmarking them and then copying them to a discussion text and I was doing it that way! It is convenient and quick, so you may have even won me over! Yet, I will probably give the URL in my buttons for those who hate that extra step of hovering.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

The unhidden link can easily be copied too for those who want to.

If the unhidden text-links are not auto-transformed as a link, then the embedded one even more easily because there is no selection to make (with the risk of missing a part or taking extra text): right-click->"copy the link". It's simplier than having (on a text-links are not auto-transformed as a link) to precisely selecting the text then copy it.

I want to know where you are sending me, always.

And you always can do so, on those links you find condescending, by hovering over.

If another user tries to help you, you have two choices with that offer of help:

  1. ignore it, for example if you find it condescending (and wait the newt user who may come to help)
  2. use it as it has been offered (=either by clicking or, and it's safer, by hovering over and read the URL then decide if you want to click it).

Of course, it'd be even better if the URL in the email would depend on if you're under the new forums or the old ones.

I think it would be even better if old URLs in emails or forums would be forwarded (by the Duolingo server) to the new URL format. This way old URLs will continue to work under the new forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Absolutely. Thoughtco.com, which used to be About.com until recently, is a textbook good example of this. All the old links to About.com work, even the many that I've posted in Duolingo forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I would better go for that, once the A/B test finished (and if everyone is switched to the new system), then run once a very simple script on their server that go through all comments (yes, the millions of them) and replace any sequence of characters www.duolingo.com/comment/ by forum.duolingo.com/comment/.
Like that all the URLs towards something on forums ever shared will be updated and work. And they can stop trying to transform text into URL (which fails, often, cf for example this comment).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes
  1. That's fine, but I've been using Duolingo for 2.5 years, and have probably posted hundreds, if not thousands, of links using just the URL. I was using the platform as it was presented. Any change should try not to destroy the value to learners that already exists in the forums. If not, who's to say that if I make my own links in a new acceptable format, that format won't be changed too? I will use what works, but I have no control over what that will be in the future.

  2. I added the part about it being browser-specific because ALLintolearning3 has already said that Safari on an itablet works fine.

  3. I'm concerned about all the work I've already done in the forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal
  1. Note that the markdown [text](URL)have been working for years.
IMHO, Duo should have never automatically detected URLs, it would have pushed everyone to use the markdown for links). But what is done is done... :(
    • who's to say that if I make my own links in a new acceptable format, that format won't be changed too?

    • Markdown is a standard. Duo can tweak it, but it's less likely to happen than on unformatted text (that Duo format itself), I'd say.
  2. Yep, I saw. But I sharied the info as I found it relevant. ;)
  3. I take it the following way: if Duo wants to crap all my/our contributions, well, it's a shame and a lost for Duo (and its community) but I don't bother much about it and will try to adapt to the new thing.
Of course, if everything can be made compatible, it'd be better.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes
  1. Yes, I use that format too. But both formats have worked for years. Sometimes I use the bare URL because it contains useful information that I want the reader to see. I can do [URL](URL), and sometimes had to if I also had [text](URL) in the same comment, but I did what was required, and now I'm just sharing my observations.

  2. ...

  3. My time is valuable, as is yours, and we give it freely to help others in the forums. Personally, I don't mind if certain comments of mine are deleted, as happens from time to time, but if a large portion my work is thrown away, I'm more likely to move on to something else. And even if I and others were to move on, I agree, it would be a shame for the existing value to be lost. Let's hope they work on compatibility.

What I have noticed immediately (yesterday, 4/20/2018) was that the browser tabs now do not show the title of the discussion (topic, sentence, etc.) like before. They now only say "Forum | Duolingo". So, when I open up a lot of sentence discussions in tabs, I have no idea, just by looking at the tabs, which one is which. Which is quite unhelpful. Please fix this.
Also, although this is not a visual thing but may be related: when I get an email saying "Someone commented on...", the included link does not take me to the new comment anymore. Instead, it takes me to the top of the discussion. Again, quite unhelpful, especially with mega-discussions like Why we don't like the current implementation of the Crowns system. Please fix it also. Thanks.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

Oh dear.

I haven't had that change rolled out yet, but especially the loss of direct links to comments from email notifications is a huge downside.

I have lots and lots of discussions watches and I try to help answer new questions as they come in - not being able to find those comments easily will be really annoying.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

On the browser tabs again, try to Bookmark one of the sentence discussions. Unless you manually change it, your bookmark will say "Forum | Duolingo".
I seriously hope this is just a bug.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Isn't the default text controlled by the tab's title?
I mean, the fact it's the tab's title --- which is currently, and wrongly, "Forum | Duolingo", as you mentioned --- that is used by our browsers as default name to a bookmark is not controlled by Duo (but by the browser), no?

In which case, (if and) when Duo will correct the Discussion page's tab's title, the default bookmark's name will automatically be the (corrected) Discussion page's tab's title. It's one and unique same issue.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

Yes, of course. I am just pointing out the problems and inconveniences it is causing. If it weren't a problem, then, well, it wouldn't be a problem.

Btw, the link in the e-mail I received did bring me right here to your comment now. So that one seems to be fixed. Yaaay!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Yes, the redirect function seems to be fully working now to link directly to individual comments, which is great news.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

They'll likely just update the URLs template in the emails once everybody is switched.

It's just that there are to different URL (one for the old and one for the new forums) and the emails still use the old ones (for everyone).
Of course, it'd be even better if the URL in the email would (already) depend on if you're under the new forums or the old ones.

But once one is switched to the new version, one can manually copy the URL in the email, edit it then paste it in ones browser. Longer but doable and it should last only until everybody is switched.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

when I get an email saying "Someone commented on...", the included link does not take me to the new comment anymore. Instead, it takes me to the top of the discussion

Have a look to the (5hours earlier) post by PeaceJoyPancakes and the comments about that.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HelpfulDuo

We are looking into the tab issue, thank you! The email issue seems to be a bug, and was not touched by this change, so it might be a coincidental bug. Thanks for the feedback!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

Thanks!
Another issue I have just noticed: when I am in the Sentence discussions (language discussions - Sentences tab), and am trying to Search for a certain sentence, the result set lists hits from all across all the discussion forums. I think it should search only within the selected forum. I think that is a reasonable expectation. If I am, say, in Spanish Discussions, Sentences tab, and I am trying to find a sentence containing the word ..... hmmm... let's see... let's pick the word "tired". OK, so I am in the Spanish Sentences stream, and I am searching for a sentence discussion containing the word "tired", these are the hits I receive:
Duolingo: Tired of Crowns?
Duolingo: Tired of seeing next language requests !?
German: I am so tired
Welsh: " Tired'
Italian: Tired
Welsh: " tired'
Duolingo: Tiring.
Duolingo: I'm sick and tired with Duolingo changes
Italian: "She is tired."
Swedish: "He is tired."
Welsh: "Tired tonight"
Russian: "Everyone is tired."
Spanish: "You are tired."

Well, yes, I am tired. Hit #13 is an actual Spanish sentence.
Needless to say, the Search function is useless this way. Please fix it. Thanks.

This problem happened once before, several months ago. Then it got fixed.
May be time to add some comments to that program code nobody understands. ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Using my ipad my email link does get me straight to the comment in Safari. You should specify the platform and browser you are using. My browser tabs do also indicate the name of the sentence discussions. I should mention that when it first opens the discussion, it is at the top of the page and then after a second or two, it goes down to the correct comment.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Are you already under the new forums?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

It did to me, too, until yesterday. When I did change nothing in my systems. So it must be the website. My preference is Firefox but it happens everywhere. Tablet, PC, and any browser I try.
Btw, apple is definitely a different system, so these new "developments" may come at a different time for you.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

I have just noticed, the languages we learn are shown next to our user names in an interesting new order now. It looks quite arbitrary.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

It is still from highest xp level number to lowest for me. Is it not listed that way for you? I wonder if it reflects crown level instead? Or is it by greatest number of learners?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

No, it was totally random, not reflective of anything. Seems like they have just fixed it, it is now back to normal.
Oh, but then I have just added this comment, and now I see my own languages only mixed up again. And btw I am writing on my tablet in a tiny box about one quarter of a square inch, with no possibility to enlarge it.
Now I have turned my android tablet to portrait mode, and the language icons disappeared. Turning back to landscape mode, the language icons reappear. Maybe they are planning to take away the landscape mode in my web browser, as well? Or maybe they are just really desperate to hire some quality developers.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Another observation: When I open up a reply box to reply to someone's comment, the cursor isn't automatically in the text field anymore in the new forums. It used to be, so this has been tripping me up repeatedly. I go to type and instead of producing text my keystrokes make the page move around and I have to scroll back to the text box, put the cursor in it, and then proceed.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lexi_xx-o6

Yay! Thanks so much. I really like updates... :3

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RooyAguirre

Gracias. I love these updates! Can't wait for other ones!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BrentlinSh1

A lot has changed since I last used it

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

Something I was wondering is if the forum could revert to the place in it where you were, when you clicked on a post? Like it does when you click on a post that has an error. Can that be made to work the rest of the time?

Having it load quickly will make it easier anyway when scrolling down.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Woof.

It's so weird to give posts some lingots and for the counter to actually work :D

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Skadi_uwu

i dont like the changes

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Which (specific changes) on the forums you don't like?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sliotar.

Why the hell is the page title of every single page on the new site "Forum | Discussion". If you have a few different sentence discussions open, you can tell which is which any more, because, instead of seeing the sentence in the tab, every single tab says "Forum | Discussion"

Guess which of those tabs is the one I'm writing this post in? You will have to guess, because on the new system, the title of this page is no longer "Notice some forum changes? Here's what's new!", it's now "Forum | Duolingo", just like every other page!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sliotar.

I now see that this issue was mentioned earlier in this thread, but I didn't realize that before I posted because, even though I searched for "title" and "forum", I didn't realize that the whole thread doesn't load anymore, so the search was only searching the first couple of dozen comments!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

even though I searched for "title" and "forum", I didn't realize that the whole thread doesn't load anymore, so the search was only searching the first couple of dozen comments!

Yes, already mentioned by PeaceJoyPancakes in this comment.
See a workaround in this comment. Being just a workaround, yes, it's not fully satisfactory.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HelpfulDuo

We are looking into this, there are still some details to iron out, we appreciate the feedback. More often than not, these things are not intentional. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mr.samosa

To (vastly) improve discussion navigation, would you guys be able to implement the ability to collapse comment threads à la Reddit?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/IAmBrave16

Looks really interesting!!! I love new updates here :D

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

within the coming weeks, some of you will start noticing a few changes in how the forum looks. Although this was a big project on our end, what you should notice are purely visual changes, such as buttons, fonts and spacing looking slightly different. […] We expect this project will be a welcome change, and hope it will breathe new life into the forums,

vivisaurus, you’ve stumped me. Why do you expect that purely visual changes, such as buttons, fonts, and spacing looking slightly different, would be a welcome change?

One purely visual change that would be welcome is more than a slight difference: the outright replacement of Museo Sans Rounded with a typeface that would allow easier discernment of i vs. í and I vs. l, particularly at smaller sizes. However, the image in your post above looks like Museo Sans Rounded has not been replaced, and unlike the choice of typeface, there have been few (if any) discussions in the forums about buttons and spacing being in urgent need of slight differentiation from their current states.

Why would you hope that visual changes would breathe new life into the forums? If the forums are becoming moribund, perhaps the reasons for that can be found somewhere other than the graphic design choices that are currently applied here.

EDIT: I’ve just received the update today, 2018-05-14. The scrolling performance has improved, and the full Museo Sans Rounded font files are finally being used (at least in the forums — the Incubator pages still seem to be using the trimmed font files), but the other visuals are worse:

  • The search box now returns non-matches as well as matches!
  • The highlighted text between backquotes (`) is no longer rendered in a fixed-width typeface.
  • The horizontal indentation between comment levels has been increased, so the deepest comment level now only accommodates four or five words per line.
  • The text of the “Reply Edit Delete” line below each comment is a lighter shade of grey than it was before, and its increased size doesn’t make up for that.
  • The comment text itself also seems to be grey rather than black; certainly the text in the comment’s edit box is darker than the text of the comment itself.

Please remember that older eyes need the higher contrast of black on white vs. grey on white! — but perhaps this is just another terrible idea from the people who regularly use the discussion forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

You are forgetting the part where they said “Although this was a big project on our end...” This is not purely visual change, but it is what they thought that we would notice first. Improvements in forum loading speeds is a big deal and I do hope that we will also see that. I do second your wish for a font that has a bigger difference between capital i “I” and lowercase L “l”. I generally make the font bigger through the browser, because i and í is not the least of my problems. Korean and Chinese, for example, would benefit from bigger fonts as well.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

No, I haven’t forgotten that. The acceleration of the loading of heavily commented discussions like the Crowns FAQ will certainly be an improvement, but the number of discussions that have hundreds of comments in them in comparison to the total number of discussions is quite small, which presumably is why the feature thought most likely to be noticed is the purely visual change of slight differentiation in buttons, fonts, and spacing.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

The loading of the forums themselves (the list of discussion of a given forum) works better/faster too, this will likely be noticed. At least I clearly did when I tested, far more than I really noticed the æsthetic changes.
The page doesn't anymore start to freeze after having loading 10-20 times more discussions (10 more each time) and you barely have any limit in how far back in time you can go back.

I may not be a person particularly attentive/sensible to æsthetic changes, but I clearly didn't noticed them at first (I even wondered at very first glance "¿?? what has changed?"). What I noticed first was the fluidity of navigating the forums.

And my impression (purely personal impression/guess, here) of the "order of events", of what has really happened, is that Duo changed its forums' infrastructure. So a purely technical change in order to:

  1. make them faster
  2. make future evolutions more likely to happen
But only the future will tell us if the try is converted on that or not. Let's cross fingers.

Then, Duo took the occasion of this anyway happening structural change, to also make some æsthetic changes (maybe some of them were needed/helping for faster loading? I have no idea)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

I’d based my conclusion on these:

Although this was a big project on our end,

in the second paragraph, and

we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project.

in the third paragraph.

The total set of these changes is referred to as “a big project” in the second paragraph, and this single big project is explicitly identified as “this latest front-end project” in the third paragraph.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

Since vivisaurus noted that this big project was focused on the front-end rather than the back-end, it’s unlikely to be primarily infrastructural in nature; the acceleration of loading of both discussion lists and comments within discussions suggests an optimization of e.g. on-the-fly generation of SQL “select” statements in the front-end, so that the existing back-end database performs better by not having to push as much data to the front-end as before.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Hi scilling,

Since vivisaurus noted that this big project was focused on the front-end rather than the back-end

That's not what I read. I read that there was a big-project of which the front-end changes "speed" and "visual changes" are two consequences (¿side-effects?) or just things done "en passant".

From my (re)reading of vivisaurus' message:

  • The first 2 paragraphs explain that it's a big-project to allow forums to go back on track with the rest of the website (with vague indication of what it is: "Asian language") and that due to this big-project completed, the noticeable changes for users --- which are the big project itself but consequences of it --- are the front-end changes "visual changes" and "speed".
  • Once the change (and it's front-end consequences) presented, vivisaurus emphasizes in the 3rd paragraph what this two noticeable front-end changes (which are, at least to my reading, the side-effects of a bigger project, not the big project itself) are not: not fixes of bugs, not linked to Crowns etc.
This 3rd paragraph is a (long) remark in the middle of the announcement (to avoid false hopes). It's not, from my reading/understanding at least, about the core of the changes nor about the "big-project".
  • Then the 4th paragraph comes back to the "big-project" which should allow future improvement then goes back to consequence of it: front-end.

I don't see vivisaurus saying (nor implying) that the front-end changes are the big-project.

Note: this agrees also with my understanding of the short exchange about it I had with staff about this changes when testing them. But I of course can have misunderstood.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Museo Sans Rounded is fun but definitely not fully conceived. If you have some italics within quotation marks, there can be overlap: "this is a TEST". (I don't know if this is browser-specific.) There are other similar problems along the lines of what you've mentioned.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Yes, I always leave an extra space after italics to avoid that overlap. I did not think that was specific to that type, but to the fact that italics are slanted.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

It could be a universal rendering problem, I guess. Seems, then, that it should be easily solvable by some clever developer (outside of Duolingo, I mean).

One of the other problems with Museo Sans Rounded that I've noticed is that it doesn't have all the linguistics-related characters that I've tried to use on Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Camilla-danesa

a good font design would accommodate that, and have all the right little tweaks built in so you'd never have to add a space. Adding spaces to make the type look right is typographically speaking upsetting to a purist, and would cause problems if a text later gets formatted in non-italic.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

This has to do with the slant of the italics and this is a feature that is added to all fonts, so it is not something that I have ever seen to not be a problem in any font. If you do everything in italics, there would be no problem, but if you use italics and then switch to a quote that is not in italics, that is when I add a space. Try in other fonts. “Italics
So it is better to put “Italics “.
See it is not a problem if the quotes are also in italics: ”Italics”

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/J.PatrickMalone

Can you, or someone, please tell us why the [Find Friends on Facebook] button is still around? It hasn't worked for more than a year...

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Hi J.PatrickMalone,

From the Original Post:

we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project

The [Find Friends on Facebook] feature is not on forums/forum pages but on the Home page. Hence unrelated to forum.

If you experience a bug, please send (or re-send) a detailed report directly to Duo staff through this form.
"detailed" = with:

  • what platform(s) you're using (website on desktop, website on phone, Android app, iOS app, etc.)?
    • if an app, what version of it?
  • screenshots of the issue
  • precise description of the course of events that ended up with your bug,
  • etc.

  • 1353

vivisaurus - I absolutely agree. I find it very difficult to distinguish (i from l from I from !) and with new words I always have to look 4 times longer than I should. This font is terrible!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MacIomhair

Any chance of finally getting an announcements forum that only staff/mods can post in (but anyone can reply to unless locked)? That would allow grumpier users (like me) to unsubscribe from the main forum and ignore all the other users having fun with things like XP contests? The forums can really get clogged up at the moment and finding something important is next to impossible.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MasterZsword

That's a very interesting idea. Personally, I would love that and I would remain subscribed to the main English forum because while there are some posts that are not my focus, "normal" users, especially active contributors to the community, tend to offer valuable information. Fierycat is a user who has been posting complete vocabulary lists for courses and I don't even see moderators or course contributors doing. I would remain subscribed to get access to that resource. Though, I guess it just depends on one's tastes. If you find nothing valuable in the main forums, then there's no need to remain subscribed to it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/FrancAngelo

I agree. That is something they should incorperate.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/johnnycury

No, I didn't notice any forum changes, and you know why? Because I (try) to use the iOS app, and there is no forum or discussion on the iOS app...been like that for quite a while now, and still no changes

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OmegaGmaster

Hooray! Now I can actually read the Finnish request thread again!

Edit: I just got the new layout and it's amazing! Thanks Duolingo! I hope this will lead to more and more internal changes and fixes to the forum!

One thing I see has disappeared is the ability to see if you up/downvoted a post from the discussion stream. Could you readd that?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DarthDuo

Hi OmegaGmaster,

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad to hear you like the new experience!

Regarding the issue of not being able to see whether you upvoted/ downvoted posts from the discussion stream- does this happen when you're on a mobile device, on a desktop browser, or both?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OmegaGmaster

I'm on a mobile device, but I haven't tested the desktop version yet. I'll edit this once I do.

Edit: I haven't tested the desktop version yet, but I did notice a bug that may break some links in older Discussion posts.

Using the quick hyper link format to link to a Duolingo page does not work anymore.

Normally, this would be done like this:

[text-to-hyperlink](/(url location))

For example, if I wanted to add a link to my profile, I could do it like this:

[My Profile](/OmegaGmaster)

This no longer works. The code above no longer takes me to duolingo.com/OmegaGmaster, but forum.duolingo.com/OmegaGmaster, which redirects to a 404.

Now I have to enter the whole link manually to get it to work. Example

Any chance of the devs fixing this? It shouldn't affect any newer hyperlinks that are written the long way.

(By the way this doesn't affect hyperlinks that link to a forum page).

Edit 2: The original bug I showcased does not happen on the desktop site.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Eden-Joy

Thank you ! ; )

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JammyDodgie

Actually, I didn't notice any changes!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Because you don't have yet the new version. Cf. the OP:

and within the coming weeks, some of you will start noticing a few changes in how the forum looks

Already noticing changes on forums would be the worrying thing. ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/butterfly_soul

Is there any work being done on allowing us to post on each other's profile pages again? :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Hi .Linden.,

From the Original Post:

we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

But I was wondering the same thing. Louis promised us something better and maybe this forum update, which I really appreciate, is a step in this direction?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I don't remember Luis promising, only that he said that they'll try to/work on creating some social features (and I wouldn't exclude that Duo counts Clubs, Stories, Events and Podcast as such)... "ASAP".

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/butterfly_soul

I know he didn't promise, but it seems if y'all are working on updates and new things, maybe you could fix the feature that kept a lot of users active? Same for Immersion. Anyhow, I'm taking the AP Spanish exam in a few weeks and then I am going to be done here. Nothing here is very challenging, and I know I can learn more. I know this is kind of off topic, and I probably sound like a whiny child, but those really are the features that meant the most to me, because I could learn from other users.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Just one precision: moderators are not Duo employees hence they do not "word on updates and new things".

So, I cannot fix anything.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

I understand Activity Streams were removed for something better as Luis put it. I haven't seen that yet. I like Stories, but they aren't really a social feature and I don't use the rest of those things.

Here's Luis' quote: "Unfortunately, the Activity Stream was like a very old car that you have to spend lots of money and time to keep up. Instead, we decided to use that money towards saving up for a new car, which is coming soon." Are you saying Luis is planning to buy a train station instead of a new car?

I see that he wrote he planned to make a better communication system.

"In addition, we plan to incorporate better tools to communicate with other learners. We understand that social connections are essential, and we plan to expand social features and capabilities as soon as possible."

I guess, I was waiting, hoping, looking for the new system since that post. My apologies if those plans don't exist. I was out of line to post here, then. Since he said the Activity stream was slowing things down, I thought this might be a step in making the new car.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I couldn't find this post last time I looked.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

Ok, so they are related. 2020? Good to know. Thanks!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Ok, so they are related.

That's not my reading: we (=users) cannot know if they are (based on the information Duo shared) and I don't think they are.

2020? Good to know. Thanks!

Just to clarify (in case this part of your comment isn't ironic): I gave a random year, I could have said any year, I could have said 9999, 2099, 2019, 2050, ...
I don't have more ways than you or anyone else to know if and when Duo plans to work on them: like you I don't know Duo's plans.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I understand Activity Streams were removed for something better as Luis put it.

The "for something" is not my reading of the official announcement. My reading is that it has been removed, then, independently, they'll work on something else (now that removing it freed them some money and time). And this something else is not social part which they "only" plan to do "ASAP" (the soonest they found could be Q4 2020... "ASAP" is very uninformative).

Are you saying Luis is planning to buy a train station instead of a new car?

No, rather that the "new car" is what is announced as happening (not as "planned") at the beginning of the "What’s Next?" paragraph.
Namely that the "new car" is:

  • A faster website
  • rewriting the Duolingo Forum

which will

also enable features that surface higher quality content and discourage pesky spam

(note that there is no mention of social thing here, but of "quality content" and "spam"). So that's my reading that what has been announced/promised are the two above things (and their consequence on "content" and "forums". That is my reading.

I see that he wrote he planned to make a better communication system.
"In addition, we plan to incorporate better tools to communicate with other learners. We understand that social connections are essential, and we plan to expand social features and capabilities as soon as possible."

As I said, I do believe that this may be (considered as) done by Duo (but can still be improved... ASAP®): Clubs.

I thought this might be a step in making the new car.

I think that is the announced new car itself (well half of it, the other half being the faster website, already pushed live).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

I think that is the announced new car itself (well half of it, the other half being the faster website, already pushed live).

Ok, so they are related.

That's not my reading: we (=users) cannot know if they are (based on the information Duo shared) and I don't think they are.

I think, I don't think? Which one is it?

Ok, so 2020's just a guess. By then who knows what will be going on! I would think by 2019 the web would be pretty defunct if it still existed.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I think, I don't think? Which one is it?

Both, each one is about a distinct thing. No contradiction as they are not about the same thing.
If you re-read my comments, you'll see I said that

  1. I think that "faster website + rewriting the Duolingo Forum = new car, which is coming soon".
  2. I don't think this new car (=those 2 above things) are related to the "plan to incorporate better tools to communicate with other learners" which is announced without a reference to an "unconditioned when"(°).

(°) new car is announced "soon" which is a reference to an "unconditioned when": it's "soon" without any condition.
While the "plan to expand social features and capabilities" is announced "as soon as possible" which is a "when" under a condition/once a condition if first (and independently) fulfilled): it's "as soon as possible", so if it's never possible then it'll never happen because as soon as never is still never.

Ok, so 2020's just a guess.

No, I never said it was a guess. I said it was a number/year I chose randomly.

By then who knows what will be going on!

No one, that's the point!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Corinnebelle

The only way I communicate with other users is through the discussion and it is social but mainly on topic with the languages. So I guess I looked at them as related. But if you mean Facebook and an entirely unrelated to languages "car" I see your point.

"so if it's never possible then it'll never happen because as soon as never is still never." Hahaha!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xMira_

And, may I ask, where are we supposed to post these questions? (I say this all with love and wanting the best for you and duolingo,) I get it with like, Crowns + Health problems, but really, there's no way it would be recognized unless you post in the most recent staff post. Going alllll the way back to the Activity post would get you nowhere, except maybe a few upvotes, and even then.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Multi0Lingual4

>"There's no way it would be recognized..."

Then don't ask, because you won't get an answer.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

there's no way it would be recognized unless you post in the most recent staff post.

It'll even less be here. Especially since the OP clearly pointed out to NOT do that!
Hence doing it despite explicit request to not, is pure clutter.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/xMira_

You missed my point. Where are we supposed to do it? Was my main question. It's not even rhetorical, I'm really wondering here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I didn't missed it, I just didn't reply to that part (cf. the quote = what I was answering to), as your question looked rhetorical to me given the long argument following it (and the content of said argument).

I'm really wondering here.

See the Support Pages which talks about it and give the official forum post about its removal, hence the prefect place to discuss it.
But you can also find tons of user-created discussions around that subject.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KelthaMcAulay

What I do not see in this new forum are the explanations before the lessons. I found those very useful. Now I am guessing as to when to use c'est vs il est for instance.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Hi KelthaMcAulay,

which new forums? For the moment, no one still have access to the new forums. Cf., in the OP,

within the coming weeks, some of you will start noticing a few changes in how the forum looks.

Also, "explanations before the lessons", have never been a forums' feature. They are a feature of the courses.
If a given skill has Tips (Duo's name of the "explanations before the lessons"), then it'll be accessible by clicking on the "lightbulb" that you'll see when clicking on the skill:

Before the crown system (which moved the Tips there), it was displayed on the skill's page itself (which page doesn't exist anymore under the crown system): in the same page where you could then chose what lesson fo the said skill you wanted to work on.
But it has never been on forums(°)

(°) at least automatically/by design.
But it's possible you see some in a forum's discussion if someone copy-pasted a given Tip into a forum discussion.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KelthaMcAulay

I made a mistake. I didn't mean the forum, but the skill tips. Thank you for the head's up about the lightbulb icon. I just hadn't played around with it enough yet.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rivers2Seas

I know you're asking for comments related to this change, but how are we to know which changes are associated with your "front end project?" It seems they all came at once.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

AFAIK, for the moment you cannot see any change due to that evolution, as no one have yet been given access to the new forums.

But, in any case, this only concerns changes that you could remark on forums pages, not anywhere else, not on any other page than the forums' pages.

Any change on pages that are neither a discussion page nor a page listing discussions (like the OP's image) is not concerned.
Only the pages that are discussions (like this current pages where we exchange) or the pages as in the OP's image are concerned.

And, among the changes you could see on those forum pages, it concerns only the "front-end" changes down of that page: mainly æsthetic changes (change of colours, of button's design, etc.) and speed of loading the page's content.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/alfredo_555

I just noticed an option of typing in stead of choosing words. I really like it as I can practice typing both languages.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Hi alfredo_555,

From the Original Post:

What you're referring to is not at all about nor in any way linked to the changes (only) on FORUMS that is the subject of this discussion (and that are about to happen but did not yet).

Have a look to the link on the word "Crowns" in the OP which is about the change --- on the course itself, hence not on the forums -- that you're referring to, and please comment there about it.

"improvements in forum loading" \o/

Good news, thank you for the improvements ! :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LupoMikti

Is this a currently known bug being worked on: my list of languages (the one when hovering over the flag next to the avatar in the navigation bar) no longer has a scroll bar and is back to being what is essentially the old version. The list currently goes off of the page. Hopefully this can be fixed quickly.

Edit: I have no other extensions or userstyles running on the forum.duolingo.com subdomain, I use Windows 10, Chrome for the browser (should be latest version)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DarthDuo

Thank you for the detailed feedback; The fix should be available on the new forum shortly :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Thank you mine is fixed for when I am not on Discussions and really, I don’t mind that as long as I can access the scrollable one somewhere. I even like not having the scrollable one on some pages, because I can access the first seventeen courses more easily. The scrollable list only shows 6 at a time, but I can get to the bottom of the list without having to zoom out to 33%. Yes, I wish the scrollable list were a little longer. I am not sure it saves me that much time, but it is easier on the eyes.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LupoMikti

Hi, thank you for the quick reply! It seems like this fix has still not been applied for me. I do not know if this is because it is still being rolled out to users. Just in case, because I didn't have the specific version last time, here is the exact version of Chrome I have currently running: 65.0.3325.181 (Official Build) (64-bit) (cohort: Stable)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Did you check while not in the discussions forum? Here in the discussions forum , it is one big list still, but when I go “Home” it is now a scrollable list, again. Before, I didn’t have it scrollable even when Home. The new forum is not quite done, I think.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

FYI, it's months for me (and I was pretty sure it was the case for everyone, accordingly to what the link provided below says) :

  • the list is scrollable and contains courses from "other interfaces" that I'm following, on all the pages that have been switched to the "faster website" version described here.
  • the list is the old version (not scrollable, doesn't contain courses from "other interfaces" that I'm following), on all the pages that have not been switched to this "faster website" version.

The forum pages fall under the second case.
And still do under their new version at the moment. But given DarthDuo's comment "The fix should be available on the new forum shortly :)", it seems this new version of the forums will allow Duo to switch forums under the "faster website" version that allows this improved list.

How to know if a page has been switched to the "faster website"? Exactly by checking if it has this scrollable and extended list. ;)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Oh, I had it back when and then it went away. Even today, I had it in Spanish and then I switched to Russian and it went away and then I came back to Spanish and it was back. Now it is working in Russian too.

Oh, I forgot to tell you about a funny glitch. When I was on Klingon, I happened to pass 200xp (I don’t know if that was related, but context can be useful.) I suddenly realized that the ring around my Xp was black instead of gold and at first I thought that maybe Klingon had a different color ring. It looked great, but I did another lesson and it turned back to gold and no one knows why it was ever black! I wish that I had taken a screenshot of it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LupoMikti

I most certainly have the new forums as evidenced by the fact that I am on the new subdomain forum.duolingo.com

I still have the list version however. I have had the scrollable list elsewhere on the site for a while now and of course was aware that forums did not have this fix. Since DarthDuo's comment indicated that I should see the fix shortly, but it has been a few days since then, I thought I'd ask for a bit more information regarding the process of correcting this, that is, I saw fit to ask if the feature was being 'rolled out' like many other features or if it was being treated like a bug that needed to be fixed and thus would be implemented as soon as possible to all accounts on the new forums.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

if it was being treated like a bug that needed to be fixed

I don't think it's treated as a bug as it was already like that on the old forums.
So "soon" could be in few weeks or months, from my experience. As it could be tomorrow.

by the fact that I am on the new subdomain forum.duolingo.com

On which it's then normal (until the day they'll "fix" it which is "soon"... no real indication) to not have the scrollable list.

I most certainly have the new forums

Never doubted it.

Finally, during the few days Moderators alpha-tested it, it was clearly said (hence to moderators) that the goal (for the moment) was to replicate the exact behaviour of the old forums under this new version (which one will allow to improve things, in the future but not right now).
So I'd take the "soon" for "a little later" at best. Just my reading, of course. Nothing official.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LupoMikti

All right, thank you for the clarification. It just seemed like it had been implemented as a fix thanks to ALLintolearning3's reply (edit: before being edited), but if the goal was to replicate the old forum behavior, then it makes sense why the list is still using the old version.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AndroidKanada

I haven't seen this yet, but kudos: that's the right way to roll out a change.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vvsey

Your link worked from the email to get me straight to the forum

And what is, once the page is loaded, the URL you see on top of your browser?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Unlike my computer, the complete URL ‘s are not visible on top of the screen or in the tabs, instead the name of the site or name of the discussion will be listed for my tablet. Let me try it again and then I will save it to my favorites where I can copy it back here to see which forum they forwarded me to. It starts out “forum.duolingo.com” and then becomes “duolingo.com”, but It is as though I had pressed the discussion tab already. So it is probably not the new forum? So long as I can see the discussions, I really don’t care. I am more worried about interruption in discussion service.

What you're referring to is not at all about nor in any way linked to the changes (only) on FORUMS that is the subject of this discussion (and that are about to happen but did not yet).

To search for other accounts/users, there is a search-engine (which is worth what it's worth) on Duolingo's Homepage. Look at the bottom of the "Leaderboard" area.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

What if he meant “How do you search, people plz tell me” I am going to assume that he was actually on topic, because the people on the apps might not actually know how to search the forum, and yes it is perhaps not actually different from the old forum to the new one, or will it be different? For now:

If you want to search, click on “Discussion” at the top of this page, then type in the search window at the top of the screen. Then click on the magnifying glass on the left within the search window.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Of the importance of punctuation!
Without, we're both right and... wrong in our interpretation: we cannot know. ;)

Thx for answering on the other possibility (that didn't cross my mind).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/RheaSamantha

I appreciate all the work you all put into this language learning system. It really is a great treat to be able to learn a foreign language so easily and on such a nice layout. Thank you!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

Well, I seem to have gotten the new changes today. And the first thing I notice is that the link to the incubator from sentence discussions is gone. Can we please have it back? That's something that will have a real impact on contributors' productivity.

Edit: Hints seem to have gone from sentence discussions, which is a loss for learners.

Edit, part 2: This one's trivial, but I now see the Words tab for languages which didn't have it before (or at least Norwegian) but clicking on it gives a 404 error. Which makes me think it wasn't meant to be visible.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/HelpfulDuo

We are looking into the link issue — the hints being removed from the Sentence Discussions is not related to this issue (this happened a while ago, before this changed... people still with the "old" forum should have the same issue — see my response about it to another user). I'll report the words tab issue, thanks for letting us know!

Thanks for the response, it's good to know that my complaint has been noted :-)

The hints in the sentence discussions are still there on the old forum:

sentence discussion - hints on the old forum

But the hints are missing on the new forum:

sentence discussion - missing hints on the new forum

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I think that HelpfulDuo had in mind the fact that the hints on the words in the source language (=English in the "Polish from English" course) have disappeared months (if not 1Y+) ago from the forums. @HelpfulDuo, please correct me if that's not what you had in mind.
Both should (of course, IOMO) be back:

  • the ones on the target language in the new forums
  • the ones on the source language, that disappeared long ago), in new and old forums

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

Update: The Incubator link has been restored :-)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Another observation: Numbered lists don't get a space after them anymore. Even if you press enter once or twice, once a comment is posted there's no line between the list and the subsequent text. My current workaround is to put a white period on its own line after the list, but I imagine the bug will be fixed, and then all my numbered lists will seem to have two blank lines after them.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarolyneCa15

I don't like the change. I just want to continue and advance each practice Why going back to the beginning and not seeing a progress. I can go back if I need it, on my own. It was fun to see a new chapter ending and a new one starting. We are not children.

I would like to access to forum posts from the mobile version. I would like to have easy and fast access to the most useful posts in sentences, not loosing my time to useless posts for a question I have.

I would like to use the usual HTML tags for formatting the text or images, even a JavaScript bar to format everything and not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

I would like fast access to units discussion and tips part.

I would like forum posts if I try to write something as this one, not to crunch my tablet, my PC or mobile resources. That is to be faster. Thanks Duolingo! But please make it more functional and less time consuming!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

I would like to use the usual HTML tags for formatting the text or images, even a JavaScript bar to format everything and not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

There used to be support for embedding CSS into the Markdown that is used here to produce effects like colored text, small caps, superscripts and subscripts, different typefaces, etc., but that support was removed in January 2016 after some people started experimenting with CSS relative positioning as a means of “counterfeiting” (i.e. by creating the appearance of overwriting other people’s comments with relatively-positioned text that was actually located in the “counterfeiter’s” comment). Rather than filtering out the offending relative positioning CSS, support for all CSS styling was removed instead.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

I would like to access to forum posts from the mobile version.

You should be able (at least with the new version but I think with the old one to) from the mobile webversion.

I would like to have easy and fast access to the most useful posts in sentences, not loosing my time to useless posts for a question I have.

This is in the hands of the community.
If everyone refrain from:

  • reposting a same question (even if not yet answered), but upvote it
  • saying "I have the same question" as an answer to a question, but upvote it
  • posting clutter

and upvotes what is (really) useful and downvote the clutter, then the ordering (which depends on the votes) that Duo put in place is already allowing what you ask for.

not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

Isn't Markdown a common formatting?

I would like fast access to units discussion

What are units discussions?
I mean at the very beginning of Duo the forums were organized by units, but it's not like that for long.

I would like forum posts if I try to write something as this one, not to crunch my tablet, my PC or mobile resources.

To help Duo making that possible, don't hesitate (if not yet done) to fill a bug report with details and screenshots.

P.S. : It never ever crunched on me on PC (and I post a lot ;) ).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Stergi3

Ok, I think there is some more to explain what I am saying: -I would like to access to forum posts from the mobile version.

No, I have no view of this forum posts from my mobile version, unless I open a browser window, that is to move to the web version. I can only view the forum posts for each sentence I practice, not the sticky ones that are important of course for the learner and include many tips, references, resources, important announcements from Duolingo team, the moderators etc. I think it this mobile version is a child of an inferior God :)

-I would like to have easy and fast access to the most useful posts in sentences, not loosing my time to useless posts for a question I have.

Yes, you are right, upvotes and downvotes show us which are important or not important to notice. What about a useful and not useful button? It is better than upvoting and downvoting in sentences. Upvoting and downvoting is based on criteria that are different for each one. I have met a lot of upvotes in jokes and smart ones sometimes, but I don't want to read these jokes many times, even they are amusing. Some of the learners are very busy and try to learn in their limited free time!

-not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

Isn't Markdown a common formatting?

Sorry, I am not an ITC expert. I know some HTML tags only and some BBCode. Is it old? I don't know. I searched in this forum to find out how it is this format and I found it in some posts. I noticed that there are not many learners who use it. Obviously they don't know. I had the curiosity to try to learn it, but I forgot it. ( I don't remember how to make quotes here so I put an - in front of the paragraphs). Of course a javescript bar to make it more user (as much it can be) could help, but if it is not practical and makes the forum slow, better it is this one. Anyway, it is not impostant. I don't know if it works in mobile version, I didn't try it yet... Ok, it is not important.

-I would like fast access to units discussion.

Yes, I need to explain more about. Units are separate in Duolingo. It is necessary to exist a space to discuss about them. The tips, the notes, the methods, how can we learn it better, resources. For instance, a difficult part in languages I try is the subjunctive. I can find in the sticky part of each language, it is necessary, as you know. Sticky parts are not in the mobile version btw (I mentioned it before). It is useful for the learners to exist a part for each unit. So as I propose one more level in the discussion board. Language->General Sticky parts->General discussion->Units-> Units sticky parts-> Units discussion-> Sentences discussion.

-I would like forum posts if I try to write something as this one, not to crunch my tablet, my PC or mobile resources.

Ok, It is something this it is a technical question. I was writing my previous post using my old (one year old) tablet, whose memory is full of apps :) and my keyboard was responding after 5 seconds! I don't know why! Some apps are memory consuming. I don't say that it is Duolingo, but a minimal and well structured memory management is in a forum and an app is a must. I don't demand Duolingo run in old and outdated computers of 2000, but the people who use it are not rich. After all this is Luis' dream: Language learning for the poor who have no money for expensive teachers, and just have an old PC or an old mobile and not the best and most expensive technology ever!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

unless I open a browser window, that is to move to the web version

Yes, that's what I mentioned: the "mobile webversion".
So it's not in the app, but accessible form a mobile device.

What about a useful and not useful button? [...] Upvoting and downvoting is based on criteria that are different for each one.

Would be the same with a "useful or not useful", each one will have their criteria.

I don't remember how to make quotes here so I put an

The same as your - but replacing it by "> followed by a space". For example

> not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

gives

not the strange Duolingo formatting methods.

One subtlety: on post's creation, the > will show up so, after creation, you need to:

  1. edit
  2. retype the >'s
  3. publish the edition.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/scilling

The reason for the edit/retype/publish sequence can be found here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sliotar.

That post explains why the symbol gets converted to html-encoding in the first place. It doesn't explain why the edit/repost sequence is necessary, it just alludes to the fact that "Duolingo has not prioritized making that change".

The reason is that the people who are writing the software for these forums don't actually have to use the forums, so they don't particularly care if the forums are a bit crap - in fact, life would be easier for them if the forums were so crap that nobody bothered to use them in the first place!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Back about the use of >: are you read? Is it coincidence? But it works directly from the first time one creates a comment. No need to edit etc. in order to have the quotation appearing correctly.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

What happens is that sometimes there needs to be a space between the > and the subsequent text, and sometimes there doesn't, which seems to depend on other formatting in the post. I haven't paid enough attention to what the criteria are (e.g. if you want quoted text and bullet points at the same time, or what), which is why I often find myself having to go back and redo whatever worked in a previous post but not in the current one, in order to make the current post display properly.

test
test

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

What happens is that sometimes there needs to be a space between the > and the subsequent text

For > to trigger a quote formatting, it has always needed for me (independently of it being messed at first or not):

  • to be the first character of a new paragraph
  • to be folowed by a space

I never saw any variation/inconsistency on that.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

Well, I just made a quote with no spaces above.

Let's try it again.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

It worked. So I can't explain why it works without a space at times but requires a space at others. Or maybe it doesn't matter, but that was just an assumption I made when it was messed up but then it was okay when I reposted after adding or removing a space.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Curiousity killed the cat. Luckily, I am not one.

So far I haven’t used a space, but maybe we are supposed to and are just getting away with it. What formatting did you do?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PeaceJoyPancakes

ALLintolearning3, if you're asking me, I don't remember and I've been unable to recreate it in the few tests I've tried. Seems to work with or without a space now. Per my edit, it's possible that it wasn't adding or removing a space that mattered, but just reposting, with or without a space.

You know what I'd like? An official list from Duolingo titled "Bug or Feature", to know what's deliberate choice, what's on the radar to be changed, and what's a known bug but will never be changed (either because the problem is external to Duolingo or it's simply not likely to ever be a high enough priority).

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lizzyblob

Can you tell me how I can search the forums from a mobile device please? I can't see that option any more! Might just be me being thick :-)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

AFAIK, the option is not yet re-implemented on the new forums from the mobile webversion.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

It is not a feature of the app, but you can open your web browser to search the forum through the web version of Duolingo. You are here now though.
On my iPad, I use Safari, for example. I have to ignore the tab they put on the top of the screen which will take me back to the app.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Doesn't it open the mobile webversion(°)? In which case it'll not be, AFAIK, a workaround as the mobile webversion doesn't have (yet) the search-engine on the new forums (this I could test as you can switch to mobile webversion on a computer browser).

(°) not using myself Duo on mobile devices, so I cannot check

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Yes, I deleted it. That did take me to the app, but I can most easily get here from the email discussion tabs. I did originally get here through a search of the web though, with a failed attempt that also took me to the app. This is what I am talking about though. Copying that button to here would not make any sense to me, because I am already here. I need something that they can see and type into the browser if they were on their computer when they came here and want to start the web version from their browser and that is new that [www.duolingo.com] now automatically checks if you are on a mobile device and sends you to the app.

I am here on my iPad in Safari browser and not on the app. Is that something new “mobile web version” ? Is the app now capable of accessing the web? The web version that I am on allows me to use Duolingo the same as on my laptop, with none of the app features. Oh and by the way, I am also now getting referred to the top of the discussion. There is the mobile app or the web version and you can access the web version with any web browser even one on a mobile phone or tablet, but you have to make sure that you don’t accidentally get yourself sent back to the mobile app which they think you may prefer because you are on a mobile device.

Okay, now I see it they are even rewriting the website, so there is a new “mobile webversion”, but that was added some time ago which is why we can use Japanese and Korean on the web version now. It changed the web version and not the mobile app. The discussions were still not accessible from the apps

She didn’t say anything about a new search feature for the new forums. Most app users are just trying to search the forums at all.

Click on the following link to a discussion called Web Version and it will be faster than the link to this discussion:

https://www.duolingo.com/comment/5402552/Web-Version

Okay, this one works fine and it is a short discussion so it won’t take any time. I just tested and it gets me right to the web version. So this link will get you on the web version and you just click on the Discussion tab above for the forums. Once you are on your mobile device and on the web version, bookmark it or save it to favorites. Eventually we will need “forum.duolingo.com:” Oh, I just tried it from Destartrek1st email and it works now also. It is more direct, as if you already pressed the Discussion tab, but it is not the new forum yet as it still redirects to the old forum for me. So, that means we still can search the forums. I hope they don’t send us to the new forum until it is completely running. By the way, my computer web browser does not have the new forum.duoliingo either or maybe it is in some in between form, because some links require me to put forum.duolingo to get somewhere, but then it changes to www.duolingo.com at the top of the screen, links that give a 404 error unless I add that in. I find that so strange!

Anywhere here is that one in clickable form:

https://forum.duolingo.com

First I just put forum.duolingo.com and that gave me a 404 error because duolingo had inserted its original address in front of it so that it was https://www.duolingo.com/forum.duolingo.com Hahaha! Of course, it gave an error!

One thing which would be useful to me on the most recent "crown" tree is that each section (separated by checkpoints) should be given a label to describe it and so I can navigate up & down more easily.

Hi Summerstor5,

From the Original Post:

we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project

What you're referring to is not at all about nor in any way linked to the changes (only) on FORUMS that is the subject of this discussion (and that are about to happen but did not yet).

Have a look to the link on the word "Crowns" in the OP which is about the change --- on the course itself, hence not on the forums -- that you're referring to, and please comment there about it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

All of these people you are reprimanding are taking about the same thing. It’s you that is off (topic). You should stop trying to bully them and address their concerns. It seems English is their first language, as we all seem to be on the same page, one that you may have skipped.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

"This new forum look is also unrelated to Bots, Crowns, and other recent Duolingo updates (you can read about some of these and find additional links in our Help Page). Multiple people having the same reading problem doesn't make them on-topic.

Very cool forum changes!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DylanApple5

when i logged back on today i decided to come back on and try to beat the massive streak score i got earlier on this year. i was amazed when i saw this new update to the website, i find it really cool how you can see what level you are in that subject and if you are almost gold in that subject or not.

[deactivated user]

I got the update, It looks good!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KatHicks13

I was just wondering if the crown will be either replaced with the proficiency percentage or if the proficiency percentage will return? The crown does not help me to know where I am in learning a new a new language.

Theron126 Thanks for the link. That helps.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Val572575

At first I complained, but now, as I'm going back over the beginning levels, I see that within each series of exercises are more complicated sentences and words being used, which I appreciate.

    [deactivated user]

      This is great.

      [deactivated user]

WHy doesn't it show my languages?

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Try changing to a different language. How many languages are you learning? If you learn from different base languages, then you only see the languages that you are learning from that base language, but when you switch back to a different base language then you will see the languages you are learning from the base language you are now on. Also, they won’t show here until you have at least level 2 in them. This is nothing new. It has always been this way.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/eberex

hi, @vivisaurus... i hope you're doing great... i just wish to inform you (being an admin) that i noticed a huge difference in appearance between the duolingo on my friend's mobile phone (he subscribed to duolingo in the united states) versus my duolingo (i subscribed in a different country). same phones (iphone). does the appearance of duolingo depend on the country in which one first signs up to duolingo?

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Send screenshots to the help button below showing the differences. Could one of you have the new forum? If it has nothing to do with the forums, then you should create a new discussion and use the topic Troubleshooting as this might be a technical question.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mizinamo

        That's right.

But remember that levels only count how many XP you have (or roughly: how much time you have spent) and don't have anything directly to do with how many words you know or how fluent you are.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Liam259278

        wow, thats a looooong post

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

I hate this new format. How can anyone learn each segment in one pass? I need to repeat each segment a number of times before I move to the next. This new format stinks! Go back to the previous one; or fix this so each segment can be repeated as often as desired. Or am I missing something?

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

        Hi vencedor549787,

        Or am I missing something?

I think so, as this discussion is about changes on forums, only. not about changes on the courses and/or their presentation and/or how the teaching is organized.

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

Hello Carlo, I’m well, I hope you are as well. I don’t speak any Italian or Romanian. Even though I am very slow I am trying to learn Spanish. In our hemisphere the two most common languages are English and Spanish. When I was young I lived in Germany and I spoke Germany pretty well, but no more.

        [deactivated user]

          Everything's different now.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SahraOsman1

NOT RELATED TO THIS JUST A QUESTION NEEDED TO BE ANSWERED one thing that I think bring up is we need more activities. just my opinion like it goes down the tree then stops. and I'm unsure whether once we finish all the levels were don with the language . I'm confused by happens. when I was doing basics in Spanish it finished after level 5 does that happen to every level ( doesn't men that they finish at level 5 It could be later). that's only one question.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

At level 5 the practice button comes up so you can continue to practice. There may be an update in the future which adds new words, you never know. You are done with the tree if you have level 5 in all skills, but you can check above and click on the “Labs” tab and choose “Stories”. Or “Pods”. You can search in the discussions for user created bonus skills also. People in the discussions have made lists of alternate resources as well.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarloGamag1

Not so dear Duo anymore!! Go back to the previous format that had grammar of the languages in many of the sessions! This was the main reason I had chosen it over some other Websites. Without grammar it is impossible to get to use words in the proper way specially if the desinenece (termination) changes due to the case in the grammatical analysis of a sentence like in Romanian and other languages. This is just one item and I could go on mention many other but this is fundamental for me. From a practical point of view, the possibility to use the words provided to answer is positive , specially for a slow writer like me, for fast completion even though it is not very good to memorize words. So ,please , even if you will not go back, reinstate the grammar chapter. This is the way I have learned Latin, English, German, Swedish, and Spanish and I'm currently using Duo to study Romanian and Esperanto and refresh my Swedish and Portuguese. I added this so you can understand that I have some experience in learning languages. Best regards Carlo. Note;as you can see from my name, I'm Italian which is my native language.

Press the lightbulb button for the Tips and Notes. Also you can check this: https://www.duome.eu/CarloGamag1/progress

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

Carlo, Italian as your native language should at least make learning Portuguese, Spanish and Romanian a breeze for you since they are all Latin based; grammatically they are the same, of the same root. Also many the word are the same or very similar. NOT at all so for English speaking native. Our grammar is very different (Spanish may conjugate one word into as many as 12 words ours 1-3) it is derived from many different languages as are our words, i.e. all the Romance and Germanic languages, Russian, Scandinavian etc. My name translates to vencedore guess my heritage.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarloGamag1

Dear vencedor, a winner in Spanish and Italian is vincitore. Just one note; only verbs are conjugated , words are declined in the different cases either by changing the suffix or by means of propositions. As far as the guess I'm inclined to say that must be one of many Spanish speaking countries. Thanks for replying, Carlo

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

My papa es Romanian, mama es Italiano.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarloGamag1

Sorry I didn't see your reply so disregard my previous reply. Do you speak either one both of those languages?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vencedor549787

Carlo, Sorry to say, I do not. When my grandparents (all 4) came to America they wanted to be 100% American, so they never spoke their 1st language to the young. However, my father did learn Romanian which help us get around in Italy; but he did not teach me.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CarloGamag1

Dear vencedor in second thought could be Catalan or from Andorra

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Val572575

Carlo, I agree with you. I've been going to websites to conjugate verbs and copy/paste them to a running separate file I keep. Www.conjugator.reverso.net is a good site for that. And there are others.

So this current discussion page is for issues specifically related to forums and, more specifically, only to issues for those who have already been switched to the new forums.

Why can't I log in using the app.

Have a look to [this Support Page's article)(https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204829870). If it doesn't let you solve your issue see below

it says don't recognise email address

Try with your username (Linda691625) instead of your email address.

If, after having read the above article and tried to log in with your username, you still cannot access it, please post in the Troubleshooting forum (not back in this unrelated discussion) a detailed explanation (and with screenshots) about the issue (and what you tried exactly).

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jolievoila

I don't like this new version because you get a teeny tiny lesson and then you have to start all over again. Three or four phrases, and then it's over. It's so inconvenient. Is there any way to make it all of the lessons? Or as your new page shows, all the levels at once?

It's just more efficient to study for 15 minutes on a complete lesson and then start a new. This new way is pure aggravation.

Also, how many levels in each lesson?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

This discussion is about a different update that is coming to the discussion forum. You are talking about the update to Crowns which questions are answered in a different forum discussion: Crown FAQ

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Multi0Lingual4

Go down the tree. The lessons get longer as you progress.

jolievoila I got the impression each one goes up to Level 5. I didn't like it at first either, but now I do b/c each level offers more difficulty, so it's not useless repetition b/c I'm learning and reviewing more. Hope that helps a bit.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

          What does b/c mean?

Duolingo seems to have lost all my previous progress and taken me back to level 1 in most subjects. I am not sure I want to make the effort to get back to my old level. I can say Duolingo has many fewer mistakes than some teaching web services that I have paid for. Well done!

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

          Hi Chica200512,

          From the Original Post:

we ask that the discussion remains reasonably focused on this latest front-end project

What you're describing is not about changes on a forum page (but about changes on your course/progresses). Hence it's unrelated with the changes that this discussion is about.
Have a look to the link on the word "Crowns" in the OP. It's most likely the change you're talking about. Feel free to comment there about your experience of that new version of how Duolingo presents its courses and evaluates your global progresses.

          In particular, about

I was up to 50% and it was all GONE.

see the paragraph named "I lost all of my progress!" of the discussion about "Crowns" to which the link in the Original Post redirects to.
No, it's not lost. You had completed (once) 50% of the skills. And completing a skill (once) in the old system corresponds to reach crown-level 1 ("1" as in "completing it once"). So your "progress" (= things you had completed) are not "LOST" but converted into their equivalent into the new system.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Znaughton

I wouldn't want to sound rude, but I really, really don't like the new update. I haven't even used Duolingo since then and it really makes me mad. I don't like that you can't see any of the words when you click on a lesson, and that now I have to redo my ENTIRE focus tree in order to have full gold on all my lessons, for both German and Italian (though I havent completed them, I mean what I have reached), which is ridiculous. Please, bring back what there was.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

This discussion is about a different update to the discussion forum which has not quite happened yet.

Please post comments about the update that you are unhappy with here at the following discussion:

Crown FAQ (offical thread from staff): https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26739837

Here are some links that might help: Hidden Links of Duolingo - And how to counter some of the Crowns frustration https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26865733

          https://www.duome.eu/Znaughton/progress

Any new content added before Crowns arrived made your gold fade on the skills that was added to, so you would have had to redo those even before the update. If you bring the skill back up to Level 1 that will equal a golden skill in the old system. At the last link you can practice by clicking on the dumbbells for those skills that have been done at least once (not the ones with the new content which must be redone) to regain faded skills that have lost percentage. This dumbbell practice is for the old system, it won’t affect crown levels which is a different system. You can see the symbols for the skills that you can click on to see words or the lightbulb for the tips and notes. You can see which skills are golden for the old system and which crown level you have next to it. You can see decay percentage for any skills that you have done all the original lessons for at least once since the new content was added. You can see if your skill decayed by the old system, but your crown level will not fade.

Any change requires an adjustment, but this one seems to have my progress going backward with overly simple tests I must master before actually progressing. It's not that these repetitive lessons are a total waste of time, but it's hard to imagine making the effort to take so many lessons before I can advance. I had been making such good progress before, but now, I feel stuck in an experiment.

What you're describing is not about changes on a forum page (but about changes on your course/progresses). Hence it's unrelated with the changes that this discussion is about.
Have a look to the link on the word "Crowns" in the OP. It's most likely the change you're talking about. Feel free to comment there about your experience of that new version of how Duolingo presents its courses and evaluates your global progresses.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

By the way, you can progress at level 1.

please just bring the old duolingo back... the whole new format thing is hard to follow and becoming a waste of time. I felt like I was learning with the old format, it was easy to understand and follow. This new format is really discouraging. Having a hard time here keeping interested with this new confusion

I noticed you removed all the posts with many thousands of comments of dislike for the Crown system out totally.

The option to REDO a particular lesson has been removed. If a lesson has not gone well for me, I find it useful to REDO in order to reinforce my learning of the particular set of words in a given lesson at any time I choose.

Can REDO be put back in as an option instead of being forced to go on in a particular category...adverbs, nouns, etc?

Hmm. It seems to me that my whole page was restarted... (I missed a few days so lost my streak), but it set me so far back that the lessons I'm redoing are super repetitive and basic. I can't imagine a week away from duolingo left me illiterate!

If you experience a bug (which I don't think to be the case: have a look to the link on the word "Crowns" in the OP), please send a detailed report directly to Duo staff through this form.
          "detailed" = with:

          • what platform(s) you're using (website on desktop, website on phone, Android app, iOS app, etc.)?
            • if an app, what version of it?
          • screenshots of the issue
          • precise description of the course of events that ended up with your bug,
          • etc.

I guess I was wondering if the revamped project and the things happening on my page were related. If not, then I apologize for being off topic.

What you're referring to here seems to be the "Health" system (deployed on apps months ago, AFAIK). You can read more about that feature here and here.

          Why am I -13?

Sorry, but this shows no understanding of customer experience. You need to work on this.

I reckon you owe people like 400 lingots or whatever these are... not to mention the wasted time in getting back to where I was (although I am still not there). These rules were never clearly explained to me.

I’ve done updates before, but rarely seen such poor focus on the user experience.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

Crown level 1 is what used to be a golden skill. In the old system your gold could fade with time and those skills which were no longer golden might not even be level 1. The reason your post is being downvoted is that other users are noticing that your post has nothing to do with this discussion about the discussion forum. The discussion that you need to be posting on is the Crown FAQ: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/26739837

This link has already been posted higher up on this page as well. I think people are complaining because they expect to be at level 5, but instead gold was at level 1. The visual is different since it does not appear gold, but your progress is not lost.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ElkieP

This seems to be a Lord of the rings language, but I only want to practice useful terms.

You need to get CX people in To help you. This is not about front end or back end, but about putting customers first.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ALLintolearning3

If only they had put a link to the correct discussion in their email!
You know what? I had an email telling me about the crowns change, but it is not there anymore - What did the message self-destruct after I looked at it? Maybe that is why so many people have said that they did not see the email which came barely before the change and which disappeared since.

I found the following in the CrownsFAQ

Skill specific workaround on a computer: click on a skill and click on start, go up to the URL and delete the number at the end and then type in “practice”. I don’t know if you can access specific lessons within a skill set anymore, but at least you can narrow it down to the skill set. There is also another workaround in that discussion.
