Why is wenige sometimes a few(more than 2) and others few (not very many).... the two have different meanings in english and it seem random as to which is accepted here?

It means "few", not "a few".

I think it just translates to "not very many"

What is the significance of the "es" in this sentence?

It is the subject of the sentence, the "there". Without it, the closest you could arrange is 'The house has few sisters', 'Das Haus hat wenige Schwestern'.

In an anglicized word order, it would be 'Es gibt wenige Schwestern im Haus', 'It has few sisters in the house' or 'There are few sisters in the house'.

My question is why do you say "Im Haus" and not "Im dem Haus" or some other way of putting the "the"?
