Why are there new Changes

As a long time user i was very happy with the way duo lingo helpt me bij learning Italian. At the moment i have a day streak if 175 days. Last year i came close to i think 280. But the latest changes i don't like. In my opinion learning a language is doing, repeating words making sentences and making mistakes.

The latest update, the one i can't make more than 5 mistakes, makes me very insecure. You have to know that i am not a language wonder and learning italian is very hard work for me.

Al this said, i would like to know why is this changed. My joy of learning Italian is flowing away

If you use the web browser on your device, rather than the app there is no health nonsense, and you can make as many mistakes as you like.

Yes, most people seem to hate this design.

And no one @ Duolingo cares.

I agree with you. Yesterday morning I made five mistakes at 8am, and the app was 'closed' to me until the evening. As soon as my 'health' disappears I close the app, I refuse to top it up either with gems or money. I hope that the Duolingo computer registers that by doing that I do not see any of their money making adverts for a day. I am happy to watch the adverts, as I realise that all this has to be paid for somehow.

I too am a 'slow and steady' learner. With the new crown repetition I have tried to speed up a bit as I revise the early sections. This makes me think faster, more as in a conversation, but this in turn leads to more silly keyboard errors, and then the five mistakes.

I use the website, as Dcarl1 has suggested, for most of my exercises. The app and the website are a little different, and I like to use both.

I cant remember the last time I used the app for learning, its just too frustrating to be bombarded with adds, health, gems, flags ... I just wish they would make their minds up, Do they want us to learn for free ( as advertised ) or pay money, Also it should be the same in all formats for everyone, not picking and choosing who to annoy the most.

Hi HelenDaisy, It is much better learning on the computer without using the app as there is none of that health stuff or gems. I actually don't mind the crowns, I think it helps me to learn! Keep up all your good work!

I found this bypass. Hopefully this will be changed soon in the app for iPhone

I am looking for another way to learn spanish and french but this is convenient....just takes so much time and delays learning grammar which is what I INTENDED TO DO .

I am also finding this update a terrible idea. We could use grammar and other learning topics in the lesson details page when using from a computer, now I can't find that content anymore.

Instead of extending the learning content and grammar explanations to mobile, doulingo has taken it off the desktop. Wrong way to go, Duo!

It is still there, just a bit hidden. When you click on a skill there will be a lightbulb on the pop up - click that and you get grammar (if there is any for that skill). Totally cryptic and over designed, but it is there.

Thanks for that tip! I was wondering where to find the grammer hints.

You can always watch an AD to get some life back. And you have plenty of ADS to see on all the new pages of hopelessly repeated content. This new update is a disaster, and no one @ Duolingo has responded to anyone's complaints, and there are thousands.

why don't you just do it online. I do. I did do it on the iPad it was soooo annoying. The health stuff.

Has Duolingo made a big mistake in putting the "health" feature on tablets/smartphones - is it scaring off rather than attracting more new users? I don't have it (using a computer), and can certainly get a lot of practice, maybe even too much repetition with the new crown system where you get to "maximum" level on a skill doing five sets of almost the same phrases, with no advance in what you are learning. And if you do still want an all-gold tree you will have the repetitions coming out of your ears, and hopefully into your memory! If all else fails, there are other free language websites.....

May I ask one question concerning the valid points such as you have raised above, and many, many others elsewhere:

* Does anyone from Duolingo, preferably with influence, actually read or take any notice of the forum? *

I suspect they do but are short staffed.. It helps to write the comments. I found last night that just going to the parts of the trees I had turned gold to work on areas I WANT to work on improved my mood a lot. I slavishly felt I needed to turn the areas gold again and had been stumbling through in a grouchy mood...pushing hard and angry at how long it took. Then I just decided to go do what I felt I needed to do to get to the areas of conjugation and tenses and moods that I need to make automatic. That went ok until I discovered it was 2 am again and I was stumbling again. Some areas are just very very weak and I don't need a number to tell me or a crown. Some are stronger but idioms get me. Often it's' typing or the program totally stops in the middle of the exercise especially after a mistake. Is that the"health feature"? I have no idea where to find an answer to that. There are labs available...and i need to go practice those more...the little stories are full of new words and all is audio that I can practice with. But the tree is taking all the time. By choice now. it seems to me it might take so long to turn an owl gold if I were just starring out, and if that meant I had to do it in order, I'd never finish the tree and never get to the tenses and moods. That would leave the scarier harder stuff ahead and always feel a mountain were going to fall on me instead of getting a trail worked out with safe spaces on it and a map IN my mind, not just on the screen or page.

We are all Suckers now. DL knows that we all want a fully golden tree. They have found a way to make us do it at least 3 times, 5 times for a faw beginner. Pleanty of time for maximum exposure to all those adverts

Are you complaining that the free app is not free enough?

April 19, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/Muss403695

Oh yes, I really am. I think of DL as a trojan horse, Advertised as free, but really isnt. Made worse by the fact that they target certain users to extract money, and for this reason I have quit using the app. Its no different to drug dealers, get you hooked for free, then later charge you for your habit.

capitalism ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Many people pay... and we're subjected to ads. that's not free.

April 19, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/ligne_

i don't really get this "they're doing it to push more ads" argument. i'm seeing way fewer of them now, since there's one fewer interstitial page for each set of exercises (and still only one after each set on the Android app).
