Pen Pals/ Amigos por Carta
The best way to practice a language is to speak with someone else i that language. There are so many users on Duolingo. I think it would be great to have a pen pals feature on the site. For example, I am learning Portuguese. There is another user learning English from Portuguese. We are about the same level. Duolingo auto-matches us together and we message eachother in the native language of the other. There can also be times when we speak our native languages and try to understand each other. I know you can comment on a user's profile, but that isn't the same as an organized conversation. Will the Duolingo staff please consider this? Vote this discussion up if you agree.
You might want to check out Conversation Exchange. You create a profile and then you can search for partners based on age, gender, native language, language being learned, language proficiency. Each profilie indicates what type of communication is preferred: penpal, Skype, Google Hangouts, etc. Most folks include some interests in their profile so you can find someone that is also interested in history, gardening, cooking, or whatever. You can share your email address with your practice partners if you like or you can write back and forth through the website if you prefer to keep your email address private.
Hola!
Hello! I think this is an excellent idea! Probably everyone here would agree with you, like me. I speak english (my mother tounge and I live in the UK) and am learning Spanish. I would love to be able to chat with a native speaker with similar interests to me. I hope Duolingo find this thread and agree also. Sorry about my bad Spanish!
Oh no, you did great! I only caught one important mistake! I'm glad you agree!

I am not a native, so my mistake spotting ability is likely limited. As such, I am not sure whether there are others or not.
Most of the corrections were grammar- or spelling-related, but I think one correction needs an explanation: I replaced "Lo siento" with "Disculpe" because of an intuitive feeling I have that "lo siento para (algo)" is not valid. My intuition tells me that because "lo siento" means "I feel it", you can only use it as a set phrase, not in the sense of "sorry for (something)".
Congratulations on your good work thus far! :-)
Thanks! I've mainly used Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish, but as it doesn't work on a translation basis I struggle with grammar a bit! Interesting about disculpe/lo siento - I never knew that!
That's all part of the learning process! You are doing very well, so sigue así :-)
I absolutely agree. I'm form Spain and I can say that your Spanish is very good. I would be the first to match with you. Even though I have a level 19 in the Spanish English course it doesn't mind. I don't thing there is a great difference. I would like to exchange with you written messages. At the moment to talk seems to me a bit complicated, but all is possible. Well, aside my particular case, it seems to me a pretty idea.
I understand that you prefer someone younger to talk or to comment common things. So you don't feel obliged to answer me. :-)
Hey IsaFaith, it is best not to double post discussions in the forums. Either post them in the main discussion, or one of the language forums, but not both. Thanks!
Okay, Sorry. I wanted to make sure the Spanish people saw it since I wrote in Spanish as well. I wanted everyone to see it. It won't happen again.
Cant find the original post mentioned but this seems like a great idea. It doesn't even have to be a Spanish speaker and an English speaker, it could match two people learning the same language at the same level together to work on dialogue. Or is this already an option and I don't know it.
Hello! I'm learning English from Portuguese, but my vocabulary is still very limited. In my opinion, a 'chat' is the only thing that Duolingo needs to become perfect. The 'auto-matching' is such a great idea to prevent unbalanced conversations. I've never thought about that before.
I hope Duolingo team listens to your voice! For now, feel free to practice your Portuguese with me here (I need to practice my English as well). Aguardo retorno / I look forward to your reply ;-)
I think that's a great idea for the DL community, but there are certainly other services that provide this functionality as others have mentioned so I'm not sure if DL will develop one alongside, or partner with one of the others. I use "HelloTalk" which does the matching search like how you describe it - lets you finds native speakers of your target language who are wanting to learn your native tongue. It's great because it's available on both iOS and Android, and supports a stack of languages.
