From my point of view the changes made to the Duolingo App are very negative. I understand that they need comercials to keep the site running (no problem with that), but having to watch a hundred videos to beg for some lives in order to be able to practice daily does not sound like time well invested for practice. And if you happen to run out of gems (450 gems for a life) you need to start all over again without even the possibility of watching one ot those long comercials. I hope they can find a way of giving us the possibility of continue practicing without so much loss of time. Cheers.

From what I understand this is only for the iOS app version of Duolingo. I use Duolingo on the web and on an android device so I do not have to deal with this, however, I know that many people have complained about the 'Life System' in general for a long time due to its demotivating properties. It seems that Duolingo has no intention of removing this however, so my recommendation to you would be to use the web version of Duolingo to avoid this. I share the hope that Duolingo will some day get rid of this system. Best of luck to you!

I think that, as you say, the best will be to start using the web version. Thanks!

In the android app we are given lingots for watching ads. Even though there's not much to do with the earned lingots and though I'm an avid ad-blockers user, I can tell you I've been watching those ads religiously! Chances are I might have quit if I had to put up with the health system...

I understand that the "health" constraint doesn't apply in the browser version. Nor do many other things. The most prominent are the course outlines whereby a brief script tell you what you are about to learn for any one subject. The list of words that you have learned is also not available, though even online the words are in reverse order (you get the most practise/the most recent first). The list is also extremely slow to load, and I've never seen the end of it.

This kind of fault is quite common, applying to the Facebook application in particular, but it also demonstrates the poor quality of programming these days - but I could expatiate on that subject for ages

Do programmers EVER test their work.

Do they test it it on slower computer and slower line speeds. Not on your nelly.

I agree that the health thing is annoying. I do, however, understand the need to get funding for a project of this size to keep running. For all of its quirks and bugs, Duolingo has an awesome thing going here that is beneficial to all. I have no problem watching a video here or there in order to keep it running, I just wish there was another way to get us to watch them other than the current method.

When I am low on health I just do the practice. I find, in fact, that I do not review enough with this new system. I'm going through way too much material way too quickly. I miss being able to see what needs to be reviewed. It's a big adjustment for sure.

The good thing about the new system is that the languages have a hell of a lot of more material to learn. It's like they added a Russian II, III, IV, and can add more material later easily, which I think was the main driver behind the changes, not selling more gems. Keep in mind the point is to learn the language, not to go through as much material as possible in the shortest time possible. Doing so might make us feel like we are learning a lot, but we really aren't.

In another thread I saw moderators say there's NOT ANY new material, contrary to what we have been led to believe by what seems to be clever marketing. This is just a new gaming approach to the same old content, I'm afraid.
