Dark Mode on Duolingo
I don't know if this is a recurring topic here but I think this is much more important than it seems. My preferred "Duotime" is usually between 2-5am; however, using Duo when there's literally no light besides the smartphone's display is really restraining to my eyes, so I can't really use Duo even with the screen brightness at its lowest. However, browsing through webpages or using apps that have a Dark Mode, this previous restraint becomes almost nonexistent. So my Duotime would be way more productive with a Dark Mode, for obvious reasons. As I think there are definitely people like me who would surely appreciate a Dark Mode, I decided to create this topic. Also, I don't really know how this isn't already an option - just changing color palettes, there's no way that's hard programming-wise. So I'm really curious as to why this isn't already included in Duo.
Having said all that, what do you guys think about my topic? Do you guys agree/disagree with my point of view? I would like seeing different opinions too.
There are a few other forum discussions on in which people have proposed ways to jerry-rig a dark mode, including:
If you do a search in the forums for "dark && mode" or ""dark && theme" you will find others.
I have not tested any of these solutions and don't know if they will still work following all the recent updates.
Tried them all. None of them worked decently enough to call it "dark mode". But thanks, anyway! :)
I used to use a dark theme that I downloaded on the Chrome web store (I think).
One problem: When I did it, I couldn't see any pictures I added to Google Drive. So if you use that for anything, and can't see pictures, get rid of it.
Not sure if it's still there but give it a try I guess.
I already tried some 3rd party alternatives. None of them worked so far (only the background image gets dark; everything else remains the same to me)
Use F.Lux": https://justgetflux.com/
It includes a dimmer which you can additionally use with the ALT + Page-Down hotkeys on regular external LCD monitors, if you do not use a Laptop.
Alternatively you could try the application "Dimmer V1" which also works in parallel to F.Lux.
This! Also try F.Lux's "Darkroom Mode". It inverts colors and blocks blue light.
This is a dark version I've made: https://userstyles.org/styles/151083/duolingo-true-dark
But it still has a few issues:
I had forgotten to adjust the color balance to the settings of my screen, thus it sadly looks worse and perhaps too dark for others.
The front page needs a little update after crowns got implemented (looks a bit ugly atm :P)
I won't be updating it any time soon even-though it doesn't take a lot of time to adjust things. If anyone has a suggestion which I can very quickly add to improve the current version, let me know.
Dark/Night mode is an option I enable on every single website I use that has it. I would love a Duolingo Dark Mode. I never do Duo lessons in the wee hours of the morning, but late evening is an entirely different matter.
I don't want to adjust my monitor's brightness just for this one site, as it's been pretty much optimized for many other things.
I agree! My brightness is always set on the lowest and even that's not enough.
Dark mode would definitely be most appreciated.
Hate being up at like 2AM or whatever, and being blinded by Duolingo's overly bright design.
Would be nice to have another option other than this eye-sandpaper theme. lol
I suffer from sever migraines which are usually triggered via light as well as sound, temperature and sudden motion. I cannot tell you how many time duolingo has given me a migraine while trying to work. I already have one right now but I like learning the languages so I try to tough it out. I would really appreciate a dark mode so I'm not as likely to wind up in he hospital.
