'what time is it' is more common for asking about the time of the day

Can we also say "what hour is it?"

I was marked 'incorrect' after giving this reply, although it in fact should be *more correct than the current Duolingo answer-suggestion of "what time is it".

what time is it? is better

i have a doubt, i am native spanish speaker, and "Que horas são?" would traduce "Que horas son?" right?, but i've been told that saying "Que horas son?" is a grammatical error, the right way to say it is "Que hora es?", that would traduce "Que hora é?", so, this also applies to portuguese or just spanish?

The correct way to say in Portuguese is "Que horas são?"

O certo é dizer: "que horaS são"

"Que tempo é" seems more appropriate for the time. Makes it clearer that you want more than the hour. Is this an acceptable thing to say?

Would it perhaps sound like somebody in English saying "I doth inquire as to our temporal position in the day"?
