Difficulty with tiu vs tio.

Anyone have any good ways to remember or comprehend the difference between these two? It seems like one is sort of an indefinite version of the other. Is that true? I'm having issues!

Thanks!

Edit: Multe dankon por viaj respondoj!

Tio is the answer to Kio (what). It ends in -o and is like a noun. It's not exactly like a noun, but it's very much like a noun. It acts like a noun in a sentence -- and can take an -n ending.

Tiu is the answer to Kiu (which or who). It is a little bit like an adjective. It can take an -n or -j ending - or both.

Which one do you like? Mi sxatas tiun.

What do you like? Mi sxatas tion.

Perhaps if you think of it as:

Tio: 'that'

Tiu: 'that one'

Tiu always refers to a specific object. This object can be part of the sentence, 'Tiu viro estas juna', or left out, if the listener already knows who or what you are talking about. 'Tiu estas juna'.

Tio refers to something less definite, and can not be combined with a noun. The listener must of course already know what you refer to. So, an -o word (noun) can not come right after 'tio'.

Mi sxatas tiun = I like that one (as if pointing at the object)

Mi sxatas tiun kukon = I like that cake (as if pointing at the cake)

Kuko? Mi sxatas tion = I like that (as if referring to something that is already the topic of the conversation).

Hope that makes a bit of sense!

FlailBot Keep in mind, Ki- refers to "what" and Ti- refers to "that:", the Correlatives show -o = "thing" and -u = "individual". So now we have Kio as what/Tio as that. Kiu as who/which and Tiu as that person. Look up Esperanato Correlatives on pacujo.net/esperanto/coursse.
