Do these three words (all of which are translated in dictionaries as "device") differ from each other in meaning, register, or usage? If so, how? Examples are appreciated.

התקן - mostly used to describe a device that is attached to something, for example - hearing aid
מכשיר - a device that is used for general purpose - like devices in the gym, electronic device, etc.
מתקן - a lot like מכשיר, but more used to specific purposes, like a device in the playground
hope it helped :)

yes.
מכשיר: more like a machine or a device that does something. for example a hearing aid or a phone (which is counted as a device)
מתקן: more like a device that does not do something (i know, it sounds weird. I just don't know how to fully explain myself). like a 'water device' where you can take water from (water facility). we also call the machines in theme parks "מתקנים"
התקן: like a device you connect to another. for example a USB memory stick which you connect to a computer.
of course, there are exceptions sometimes, but I just cannot think of any right now. that's the main idea behind the differences. hope you found that helpful.
