[FEATURE REQUEST]: Generic practice (Strenghten skills) needs added "bottom to top" setting per tree
@Duolingo staff (business developers) @Karint @Luis @Severin and @investors
From my last strategy comment in the "Crowns FAQ" thread (will try to direct link later):
Quote Thomas.Heiss 1b) I usually use the general "Practice / Strengthen skills" button as "timed practice" to save my streak and gain XPs.
To add to 1b:
I want to add as change-/feature request for the GLOBAL Practice button (I may have described it already in another thread)
a user setting per tree / two dedicated starter buttons:
1) work from bottom to top in the tree (from last skill to first skill), currently missing
2) work from top to the bottom in the tree (already coded, default behavior for non-golden skills)
Since more than 5 months since I finished my tree (golden owl) the generic (global) Practice button highly focuses on the first half (~15-60%) of my tree.
Every day / week new pre-golden skills decay (strength of words) and the generic re-strenghten button highly focuses (only) - again - on the first 15-60% of my EN-PT tree.
It feels like an endless loop which I could only break out if I put into many many XPs per day and re-strengthen ALL skills much faster.
No, I am NOT talking about crown L3-L5 lessons.
Without the right user setting / starter button I can only strengthen a single skill.
Your global "Practice" at least shows a blue "'Practice again" button after the end of the strengthen session, which is great!
I definitely want to have this to quickly run sequentially 5-10/15 sessions.
I request that we users can have this very great feature (incl. timed practice) for the 2nd half of our tree and much more difficult (and less practiced) contained skills, please.
@Duolingo users: Please help to up-vote this thread.
Best regards / Viele Grüße aus Deutschland
I would definitely use the practice function more often. Right now, every time I give it a go, the material presented is way too basic and not challenging at all.
This function definitely needs some kind of adjustment. If not up vs down, maybe some kind of algorithm that selects proportionally more questions from more difficult skills and reviews those more often than from the basic skills.
Wow, that is a really smart great idea! That sounds really cool, and helpful! I honestly I'm loving that idea right now. Nice job! And I don't think you've said this before.
Also, since this is a suggestion can you please edit your post and move it to troubleshooting? Trust me, I've asked a mod and troubleshooting is for suggestions as well. Great idea again, have a nice day!
I am so glad you like my idea.
As we know how busy the DL developers are, quick non-complicated solutions might be more sooner to be expected than other ones, if ever.
Of course, I have no problem moving to any sub-forum, what staff or moderators tell me.
Trust me, for the past 1,5 years generic / suggestion threads always have been kept in the generic (uncatagorized) DuoLingo (English / German) sub-forums.
Troubleshooting sub-forum was more used for e.g "lost streaks", "web site trouble", "mobile app crashes", etc.
Not too many DL users look there!
So "DuoLingo (English)" is the general sub-forum, which is scanned / subscribed by most people.
And for concrete suggestion threads I never heard complains up till now, that those threads should be moved to Troubleshooting.
I like UweRo's suggestion very much to open several sub-forums, and I once requested it from staff for "clubs" and "introductions" and I would be glad to move this thread to a (better) place, where actually many of the million of DL users have mainly subscribed to.
Yes, because they have changed it. The guide about it is out dated though. But if you have seen Mods say it then you should know. I know it's confusing. I think next time I see a Mod I will ask them when their going to update it or if they'll do it at all.
How about a new forum for suggestions? Another new forum could be for lost streaks. And we need a forum for unsure placements, when we have no idea where to post. Of course we will need some mor mods to manage all these forums.
Yes true, which is why we can't add new ones. We don't have enough Mods.
Nowadays I use the "skill practice / re-strengthen" buttom for a single low strength 0-24% (skill contains MANY dead words) or 25-50% strength skill.
Do you think it would be possible for them to develop a practice button that worked from the words tab?
Allow an individual to click up to 20 words that have a low strength level, with a check box next to each word on the left side of that webpage. Each one of those words is linked to a series of sentences that appear throughout the various skills. The practice button would then generate a practice session based on a query of those 20 words and the sentences they are linked to and generate a randomly ordered, but personalized Duo session.
I kind of thought this is what was always happening but apparently it's not.
I am definitely missing a way to practice the weak or dead (strength 0.0...) words.
I also have heard (for a fully golden crown L5 Italian tree) that our expected "mixed skill" approach does not really work (anymore?) when the tree / course strength is back to 100% for all skills.
Once upon a time this was for many users here the ultimate goal to have a fully golden tree (strength 100%): https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/6176795/Best-Way-to-Make-Your-Tree-Turn-Gold-and-Stay-Gold

I highly miss the ability to focus on dead words!!!
Also not being able to repeat a specific unit of a specific skill for a given word (at a specific level) is a great loss.
Sometimes, somebody makes a comment in a sentence discussion and I have no way of going to that unit and hitting that sentence to check if that translation is now accepted etc.
Looks like I missed so far an interesting link: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/6176795/Best-Way-to-Make-Your-Tree-Turn-Gold-and-Stay-Gold
If you like my above suggestion, I would be glad if you could also up-vote my feature request in Dr. Luis van Ahn's "What changes would you like to see" thread: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/28202855$comment_id=29981235
